Steve, I love the new stance and all the upgrades you've managed, and at seemingly good (net) price outlays. That white with alum & chrome trim, bbw, and tinted glass surely flow together nicely. And the work with the 15-year-old makes for priceless memories, from both your perspectives.

I am curious to know what that 'glob' is on the steering shaft about 2.5 inches up from the rag joint. I see the roll pin: if it fastens outer tube on adapter flange to inside original round shaft, it may be stronger to use like a 1/4X20 high-grade bolt--altho' the coupler need not be nearly as strong as we might first think, as not a lot of force/torque is exerted on that connection.

I finished up the power brakes this past weekend ...scounged the lines (from a 1975 Blazer in the local junkyard) and paid $300 for new front brake hoses to the front discs and new master cylinder proportioning valve and booster. Here how it looks (not a pretty motor but it runs great)

Now the car stops straight, even with no hands on the wheel. Need very little pedal to stop now too. My wife and kids could drive it now. Before it would violently shift to the left with the drums and the weak front end. It just wasnt safe. The 2 1/2 inch droppped spindles and the standard springs give it a very subtle but still streetable rake. There are no front end noises now either. I decided to mount the proportioning valve on the left crossmember on the frame under the motor. It allowed for the easiest plumbing of the master cylinder with the stock lines from the mid-1970s truck and the cleanest installation. I even used the factory line clamp that bolts to the top of the left frame. Notice the totally rebuilt front end (new springs, balljoints and steering components)

AND NOW SPECIFICALLY FOR RENE A SNEEK PEAK....I had bought 6 lug wheels (slot mags) 15 x 8s 4 for $100. They were real old and oxidized. I first washed a rim with oven cleaner and a scrub brush. Then I thoroughly rinsed it off, then used 120 grit paper and lots of elbow grease to sand out 90% of the machined lines in the wheel, then I used 240 paper dry, then 320 paper dry, then 500 grit wet paper and then cut the wheel with brown rouge on a cutting 8 inch wheel and a 3500 rpm Makita polisher and then polished the wheel with white rouge and a polishing wheel. This was my first attempt and for you polishing purists this is far from perfect, but I did it myself and am happy with the results:ito:

Next I need to tackle the wood bed and I need to redo my instrument panel /rewire it. Lastly I need to install a radio and a set of rear dropped springs (original springs were weakened with heat by the previous owner). Plus I need new shocks...El Palomito is really becoming a money pit!

Wow Steve, I'm really impressed!!! A set of black license plates would set it off and I think I know where you can find some era correct repainted ones. ;););)

Hey Rene....but can she paint in the "California" part? Just polished whell #2 tonight and I have "discovered " I bought two 15 x 8.5s and 2 15 x 7s. Will a 15 x 10 fit in the back??

UPDATES!!!

Got tired of the loose rattles and boucy ride. Bed came off and I am redoing the bed wood (more on that later). The rear most frame crossmember was really bent as were the lower trailing arms, most likely from previous farm work. I removed the rear most crossmember and replaced it with another one off a truck in the local junkyard.

The I scraped off old grease and wirebrushed and pressure washed the metal. What a mess. A shoe box full of mud, grease etc. came off the frame!

Then I coated the frame with Chassis Saver Brush on paint ($40/quart). Next I'll move on to the bed. In this process I also replaced the worn out hydraulic shock with new Monroe Air shocks and replaced the panhard bars bushings as well. I ordered cab bushings (still waiting on them) as well.:smoke:

Mia (my 8 year old) helped finish up the bed Sunday!
Truck sits lower now (more weight in the bed- half the original wood was missing!) Mia also installed new rear air shocks (as shown 80 psi) but I think Im gonna buy taller rear springs and go from a 3" rear drop to a 2 " rear drop and run less air in the shocks daily... Have new fender emblems and a red sticker on the sail panels to add a splash of red color!
Now I need to redo all the electrical, new cab bushings and dynamat, redo the tailgate, and freshen up the dash!:smoke:

Very nice work. I am about to redo my bed and keep going back and forth between clear and black for the wood. Also doing in reverse order. Doing gauge and electrical 1st.

Steve I`m running four inch drop Heavy duty springs in mine no air shocks from CPP just for visual aide..I still use mine as a truck, sometimes the loads are heavy..

Think factory was black. Much easier for a driven truck....show truck look good with the stained (clear) wood. I am gonna put a camper on it and enjoy the summer!:lol:

Fresno has a shop (classic chevy) that has a 2 in drop spring. Im going to place my camper on this bed and see what I get first....If it sags too low I think I'll buy some other springs.
