Re: Chevelle Gas Tank Swap
Hey Sam, well I guess I could go with a non-vented cap. When I ordered the tank, I had the option of getting a vented gas tank. I guess I should have ordered that tank. For now im going to try it out as is, if I have a problem with it leaking I'll try plan B. Sometimes we overlook the obvious.

I got the tank installed with the help of my brothers and friends. It fit good didnt have to cut the sending unit just had to bend the lines in the direction the hoses will be routed.

After mounting the gas tank to the frame, the new obstacle is the filler neck. It needs to be shortened about 5 inches maybe 6.

Re: Chevelle Gas Tank Swap
So in looking at those pictures, it doesn't appear as though the Chevelle gas tank would work with the auxilliary leaf spring (on coil spring pickups). On my C20, the aux springs attach to the outside of the frame rails, and it looks like the 'velle tank extends beyond the frame rails. Is that true?
Nice write up, by the way. |
Re: Chevelle Gas Tank Swap
I believe this chevelle gas tank may only work on short wheel base trucks that have the coil spring rear suspension, becuase it is wider than the frame.
They may work on the long wheel base trucks with either suspension. The chevelle tanks I had seen installed were on long wheel base trucks, I ordered mine and then realized I might have screwed up. I got lucky and it fit tight but good. I went with this gas tank because its the easiest and cheapest route I could think of. Im still working on it, but so far I'm happy with the results. |

Re: Chevelle Gas Tank Swap
You guys interested in this swap,
I used all pre-existing holes on the frame, except for the two I made on the rear cross member for the two bolts. |
Re: Chevelle Gas Tank Swap

Re: Chevelle Gas Tank Swap
I'm liking it alot, except for one thing...When I nail it off the line, is any fuel going to leak from that neck & cap?
|
Re: Chevelle Gas Tank Swap
I am actually going to use a newer fuel cap assembly i picked up at a junk yard I'll post some pics.
A friend of mine suggested fixing the filler neck so that you can fill it from inside the bed, If I have any problem with fuel leaking out, I might route the filler through my bed. The member whom I got this idea from, says hes happy with his setup, although hes not running EFI and has a nonvented gas cap. Something else one could try is fuel cell foam, maybe? Re: Chevelle Gas Tank Swap
Well you can order a vented gas tank from rock auto, don't know why I went with this one?

Vented gas caps have a check valve built in. Air can go in, but not out. If you have gas coming out of your cap, replace it.
This is a '69 Camaro tank with 3" spacers. |

Thanks for that info, that's why I love this forum.

Re: Chevelle Gas Tank Swap
Forgive me if this has been covered as I have done something I never do. I have skipped to the end of the thread without reading it. I just wanted to let everyone know that if a Chevelle tank will fit, The Impala tank [like one from a SS 94-96 with the LT1] will fit as it is the same dimensionaly. I uesed one on my 68 LeMans convert when I went to the 6.0 LS1. Once again hope this may help someone and sorry if it had already been covered

Re: Chevelle Gas Tank Swap
94-96 impala tank is 23 gallons the chevelle tank is 20 gal.
I didn't know that those cars filled from the back. I've got mine setup, it works and very affordable. I'm thinking about a second build, so I'm going to research this impala tank. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Chevelle Gas Tank Swap
Concerning the 94-96 impala tank (and not to hijack this thread)
I think the impala tank has a big hump on it. Seems like the chevelle guys just cut a hole in the trunk to make room for the hump http://www.chevelles.com/forums/show...=123036&page=2 seems like from Rudys pics, there might be room up in the frame to accommodate the hump. im going to a junkyard this weekend to try to pick up one for my 5.3 swap. didnt mean to hijack! this is a great thread! |
Re: Chevelle Gas Tank Swap
