Re: Need some help on How to install an HEI distributor

Thanks!
But,my HEI cap doesn't have a "designated" spot for the number one plug wire. Basically I did the steps backwards. I should have put the distributor in, spun the motor and found plug number one, then put the wires in their firing order.
If I wanted a certain plug on the cap to be the number one plug. I would have to find tdc for the number one cylinder and then slip the new distributor in with the rotor set to point at the chosen number one spot on the cap.
I hope to be able to get to do the timing today and take it for a spin. It's no fun to work on all the time, need to drive it every now and then!

Finally a update!
I had to set timing by ear because I couldn't see crap on the timing tap and harmonic balance. I test drove it a good bit like that. Truck is running super smooth and starts great. I finally picked up a timing tape for the harmonic balance yesterday and put it on this morning. I was fairly close for setting it by ear, hadn't done that in years, I was proud of myself.
Anyway, its running great now, starts good, I am happy !

Thanks for all the help. :metal:

Hey WadmalawJoe,

I just got the same HEI off ebay over Christmas and installed it on my 250 six cylinder engine along with some new plug wires too. Still need to set the timing on it and hopefully I'll have my '66 out on road soon.

Glad to hear yours is running great....maybe I'll see you cruisin down Maybank one day real soon. (I'm on Johns Island)

Jeremy

Hopefully I'll have the Blazer on the road this weekend and driving it again. If not look for my rusty '39 Ford sedan. If you need any parts I have a friend that I think still has a bunch of truck/parts for your year.

#1 is where you put it but usually 1st connection to the left of the connector when looking it the cap. Im sure you have a buddy............put your finger in #1 plug hole and have your buddy bump the starter. When your finger blows out of the hole your close. Line the timing mark to 0 and stab it with rotor pointed at #1.
