I'm guessing your rocker panels and door bottoms are rusted too? It's more than likely water damage from a rusted through rain rail above the windshield. It leaks through the rain rail, runs down the windshield, and down to the doors.
Mine did that too. I guess it's common on our trucks.

You lost me on this one???

I understand the rain rail and down the windshield part possibly clouding the windshield, but how do you jump the path of water to the door bottoms and rocker panels when they are completely separate panels?

I am fairly certain the lower door rust is that the weather stripping for the side glass has rotted away. That would be the most direct path for water to the bottom of a door. As for the rocker panel.... depends where you live. In the north it was from salty winter roads.

Just my two cents.

I have been paying for it for 34 years! I agree it's built into the policy some place but no out of pocket money at time of install. I have 5 vehicles on my police and last year I had 3 of them done.;):chevy:

U all are going to ship a 40 year old windsheild by UPS, Fed x!
This is a first. What is insurance on it? I would think a local windsheild installed would be cheaper!

Windshields are laminated. They have outer glass, inner glass and a thin layer of clear safety material in the middle (don't know the technical name for it). The safety material is what keeps the winshield from shattering like the side or rear glass will do. On older windshields these layers can seperate on the edges and allow air and moisture to get in between the layers. This will happen even if there is no evidence of a leak around the seal. There is no way to fix it other than replacing the windshield.

Yeah, check with your insurance company before that rock accidentally *wink wink* hits the windshield.

I know we are paying a little extra for that coverage, but we have had 4 replaced in about that many years, so I think it is worth it :)

Re: Clouded windshield. Any way to fix it?

I actually do have a rock chip in my line of sight, so it qualifies for total replacement. I just called Safelite and my insurance is through All State. I have full coverage, glass coverage, and only a $100 deductible, which Safelite is paying.

They come out tomorrow to install the new window. I told them to make sure they bring a new inner gasket, as well as the outer piece in chrome. They said it was all included. They even asked me if I wanted chrome or not. It has that already, so I'm sticking with it.

So, do I need to kindly give the installers some tips on what to do? What would I suggest?

That is very nice. You are going to love a nice new clean windshield Mr-B.

That is a good question since most glass in cars and truck now is just stuck in with sealer and there is no gasket. I have put them in before on the old Chevy's before with two people.
You might want to help them get the wiper arms off but the rest should go smooth.

Thanks. Looking forward to it. I've got that little tool to remove the arms, so maybe I'll put it to use again

I've read here that it's best for them to start at the top. All I know is that when the guy came to do mine, he started at the bottom and everything was cool until he had about an inch to go on the top and he cracked it. Before he started, he said he was familiar with these, so who am I to say. That was on a Friday, when I'm home, and he came back (with a helper, according to my wife) on Monday and they got it done. But I wasn't there to see it happen.

After it was all done, I got a small tube of 'windshield sealant' which was just black silicone and put a fine bead around the edges. I think it helps. It still leaks some, but nothing even close to what it did before.
