hOW ABOUT SOME PICS OF THE BOTTOM??

70 Jimmy 07-27-2003 08:37 PM

I just set my motor in a 1.5" crossmember notch. It's a 454 w/HEI and I had to move it foward about .5" for the HEI and up 1" to clear the crossmember. I also had chevelle headers to contend with. Because of those I cut my firewall to allow for the passenger side to fit (needed about .25"). I might have been able to fit them, but I didn't like them that close. It won't be noticable when I'm done. I've got pics but they are too big even to email. I'll have to figure out that when I get home and post them. Good Luck.

Just wanted to keep this one near the top. When someone get's their steering rack installed ------- post some pics....

phantom dually 07-30-2003 08:38 PM

Talked to JAMES at Turners place and they are finally sending my things back to me!! They have had them for a couple of months now and I am far behind!!

fastbagged68 07-31-2003 11:24 AM

Still waiting on my rack to be shipped out to me!

SCOTI 07-31-2003 01:34 PM

Man I hate waiting for my parts so I know it's got to be killing you guys!

phantom dually 08-01-2003 05:34 PM

Its like a BIG game all the manufacturers play with us. They have your parts ready to ship one day then you call back a week later and they say oh we are just finishing them up they should ship out friday!! It sucks!! Just be honest and tell me the truth.

phantom dually 08-11-2003 06:09 PM

Finally got my crossmember back!! Here are a few pics. Bad thing is i found out that the odd brackets that you see in the pics laying under the member have to be added to the frame in the front to notch out for the rack and pinion. I already have my frame powder coated!!

Nice! I am waiting on my rack still but got almost all myother parts. Do you have any other pics? top view and so on- Mine will be alittle different. I did a 2 inch notch in my crossmember. Oh man hope I get mine real quick here.

SCOTI 08-11-2003 07:32 PM

Yes, more pics from different angles please. Also, what application is the rack originally for? Looks good, I bet you can't wait to get it installed.

As for your frame dilemma, that does suck. That's one reason I just coated mine w/DP black epoxy. It has been cut, drilled, & welded on several times after I was 'done'.

phantom dually 08-11-2003 08:48 PM

Rack is originally for a Mustang 74-78.

Slammed67 08-13-2003 03:50 PM

Question: How are you going to get the steering shaft to hook up the the rack?

Smooth68 08-13-2003 04:17 PM

DOH! Surely if someone has designed this setup they have a solution for that too - 6 or 7 knuckle joints?

fastbagged68 08-13-2003 06:06 PM

I'm thinking probably 3 joints- but no telling till you get header and a block in there! I want to see more pics!

loweredd 08-13-2003 08:29 PM

Does anyone know of a company that has these for 73-87?

fastbagged68 08-14-2003 11:22 AM

Turner Enterprise- also does 73-87! Give him a call. Be prepared he will talk your ear off!

phantom dually 08-14-2003 09:45 PM

Lately Bill is not to be found over the phone. Maybe he lost his voice!! 2 joints will get it!! Maybe one more to smoke as I install it all!! JOKING!! ANY ONE ELSE WITH PICS FEEL FREE TO POST!!

70 Jimmy 08-15-2003 01:29 AM

Is that a standard length rack and pinion? Can I go find that year Mustang and get the rack from it and install it? Details please. Thanks

phantom dually 08-15-2003 05:44 PM

Yes it should be standard. Note that I was told there is a difference between the power rack and the manual rack. I have chose to run the manual rack to clean things up.

loweredd 08-15-2003 10:16 PM

how easy will a manual rack steer on our trucks though? I had a Nissan pickup once with manual steering and it was a pain.

It probably wasnt rack and peanut steering though.

phantom dually 08-15-2003 10:42 PM

Once it gets going it should not be to bad.

Hey I forgot about the frame recessing part way into the crossmember - after looking and thinking at it again it shouldn't be too bad at all.
