Thanks to Don for posting more pics of my truck. It's been slow going this winter as I only get one day a week off at my job and that's usually when the weather got nasty ( go figure!).learning as I go on this one.The GM engineers it seems never intended for these trucks to sit this low, which made it a one step forward two back sometimes. I think I've finally got the geometry right so that the floor of the bed can be wood with nothing sticking up through it and still have enough travel in the rear suspension to make it streetable. Thanks for the replies on the engine and the truck

Lol, You're doing fine don't worry about it. Thanks! It takes good pictures anyhow. Maybe we can all meet up and talk trucks at a car show or meet this summer.

Hey Arky, Truck's look'n great. I'm getting ready to tear my GMC apart to do the very same mods you've done. I was wondering if you had some pointers for me? Did you remove any leafs from the pack on the rear? Mine is a 3/4 ton so I've got 9 leafs in my pack. How close is the front crossmember to the ground? Do you think it is too low with the 3" drop spring? I haven't purchased my springs yet and need to decide on 2 or 3 inch with my 2 1/2" spindles.

Love the way your truck is coming together. Keep up the good work.

Re: Jimmy the rat

Thanks Bob, I didn't remove any springs in the rear. They were original and had lost some arch over the years. All I did was buy a flip kit for 73 to 87 and it worked just fine. I'm afraid I can't be much help on the front end because I don't have the engine or tranny in it yet. I can tell you that the lower A arms are very low with the drop spindles. The cross member will squat when I get the motor in it but I don't know how much. I feel the old long tube headers that fit these trucks are going to have clearance issues also. I've never done a truck this way so I'm learning trial and error ( lots of errors) ha! Good luck with your truck and I hope you have as much fun as I have been having with " Jimmy the rat"!

I just recruited a new mechanic today. My daughter, Haley, is in from college for Spring Break,
so I put her to work prepping the bed for new wood.

Truck is changing fast, looks like quite the high intake on the small block, what alum heads are you running.

Look a little closer mud man. Those heads are iron but painted to look that way. They are old school 375 horse double hump with 2.02 valves.

...Funny< got me on the heads, wow wasn't paying attention at all, good thing I don't buy engines without looking closer. Funny thing is my complete 454 is painted marine grey and have had 2 at least think the heads are aluminum.

Bomp, I know you can tell that this truck is being put together with mostly used and salvage parts and pieces. I find it amusing, after seeing what you are doing over there on your build, that you could take an interest in what I've got going on! Your truck is so extreme and the work is so professional! The way I see it, about the only difference between what you do and those " build it in a week" shows is, your mods take longer. You have the coolest truck on this forum, in my opinion

Re: Jimmy the rat

Got the wood in the bed of the truck today...No metal strips. Had some cedar cut for it at a sawmill.
Two outside 7 1/2" all the rest 7" wide. Gonna use spacers and bolt it right through the wood to the frame.
Total cost including bolts and self drilling screws $60.

Got bed installed. Next is replace back bumper with a roll pan from lmc truck, mount brackets for hood pins, then on to brake lines and shocks before engine goes in.
