i know that the sheet metal is a heat shield im refering to the 2 plates below it on the intake runners themselves. im gonna check for vacuum leaks next just to check

^ Agree, the intake looks like it was designed for a Rochester stock type carb.. Humm, square bore carb on a non square bore intake manifold?
