Thanks a lot guys for the help. Means a lot! My problem is that if it needs a new flywheel i dont have the money to fix it, or a space to keep it.

I may be able to do the swap, but im not sure yet, i have to check my starter first. It could just be a problem with that, i dont really know.

The thing is that unless you have a brand new car or truck with a big payment under full warranty your gonna have to learn to do some fixing or start paying someone to do it for you. That truck is probably one of the easiest things on the road to work on. Hell, you can practicably get under one with a 1/2" or 9/16" wrench and fix anything. Dont be over thinking whatever it is. I know it sucks when its cold and snowy but it would only take a few minutes to see any of the problems the guys have said to check. The flywheel is not an internal part and neither is the starter. Both those parts are not expensive and can be found at damn near any junk yard or parts house since those are not model specific parts. Is it a v8 or straight 6??

Re: URGENT! Major problem! Need assistance!

It has a swapped in 350 auto transmission. and its a bit hard to get under my truck lol, whoever owned it before the previous owner lowered just the front end lol. I may have someone who will help me fix everything for free, as long as I buy the parts, but I don't know if I can because the car isn't registered in my dads name, its in my moms name for now. As I've said I'm only 16 haha, I'm not the best with mechanics, but more knowing names and history and special editions and what not haha.

I understand that you are young and this seems like a big deal, but the beauty of these beasts is that they are so simple ti work on that you could litterally change both the starter and the flywheel while sitting on the side of the road with just a jack and some very basic hand tools. You would need a wrench set, and a socket set and thats about it. The jack is just to lift the truck up enough to get under it. Just be sure to disconnect the battery before you start wrenching on the starter as it has live wires on it that will arc.

I had one of these trucks when I was your age and I drove it to school, and then 45 minutes to work every day. I spent many times on the side of the road cleaning my holley carburetor because I had a dirty tank. Get yourself a book on your truck and start learning. You are still young and this is the perfect opportunity to learn about cars, something that will bennefit you for the rest of your life.

Re: URGENT! Major problem! Need assistance!

Oh and another thing. If you are scared to mess up on your own truck, do what me and my old man used to do, go pay the $2 at your local pull a part and tear apart one of ther vehicles. Great way to figure out the do's and don't s so when you get ready to work on your car you know what your doing. I remember many times going to pick n pull and spending hours there and not leaving with a single part.

pull the negative battery cable, pull the dust cover over the flywheel (if you have one), pull the (2) 9/16" bolts holding the starter up, push the starter towards the front of the engine to get it out of the way, remove the (3) bolts holding the torque converter to the flywheel an slide the torque converter back towards the rear of the truck and there should be just enough room to get a wrench on the (6) bolts holding the flywheel on the engine. they are either 5/8 or 11/16 . when you install the new one, be sure that the indentations where the bolts for the torque converter go are facing towards the rear of the truck.

Dont sweat it bud, we all started somewhere. We all broke stuff learning and we all was intimidated at some point. But like i said, its a hell of a lot easier to learn on something like that old truck than it is something with all the spaghetti under the hood (wiring)
Im 44 and any time I open the hood on something new... I scratch my head and close it back up and call or take it to someone else lol

I already admire that you're so young and you are willing to own and drive the Old School stuff. Just dont go selling it just because its broke.

Re: URGENT! Major problem! Need assistance!

Thanks man! I've wanted a classic car or truck ever since I was 4, and I'm happy to have one as my first car too :). If my truck happens to need a lot of work done to it, I may let it sit for a bit and get a second 67-72 as a daily until then :). I found a GMC with a plow setup on is for $1200 nearby, but it has a cracked frame :(. Is a cracked frame even fixable? And I honestly never want to own a car newer than 20 years old. I love classics and always will. I particularly love classics that are numbers matching original, because it makes me feel like I'm in the 70's or 60's, standing at a dealership waiting to purchase a "New" car haha!

hahaha, a cracked frame is a hell of a lot harder to fix than a flywheel. you need to stay focused on this truck first. if you have 1200 for another truck, then you definitely have $60 for a new flywheel or starter.

Re: URGENT! Major problem! Need assistance!

Make sure you use jack stands and chock the wheels! I usually put a prybar in the teeth to stop the flex plate from turning while loosening bolts.

Okay. You can post. So can my grandkid. He's 16.

He helped me for a few years on the build while RAT was coming together. He's likely to get RAT when I go six under.

Unfortunately, he's more into Toyota 4-Runners. Got-a mid mileage '97 and dumped a hell of a lot of money that
he'd worked hard to save fixing overheating problems.

I'm going to take a little liberty here...assume you are a young man....don't know if you ever said that or if you were
of the fairer gender... so I write as if you were my grandson.

I hear him say all the time, "I can't do this because....". I tell him, "That's right". "If you think you can't do it, and
don't try, then you really can't."

So, when I read your posts (first of all, to me "Urgent" gets me all worried and pulling out the trailer or bandages.....
....so, URGENT, in my book, is not the best word for your situation), I see that you are pretty clear on some issues that
you "can't" do. Snow, storage, money, etc. That pretty much tells me that you don't need to drive your truck to perform
your real life chores.

I don't want to sound like the old man I am, but I remember soooo many times I HAD to get my broken vehicle running
on a Sunday night when it was raining, snowing, and/or getting dark. Either fix it, or not get to work Monday morning in
order to feed the hungry birds in my nest. ..Then again I *had to*...I think that, thankfully, you are not in that situation.

But, I have to say to you, "sack up".

You want to keep that truck? Or get something else that's over 20 years old? (BTW, that might be a '95...not a classic, right?).
Find a place to work on that truck. Out of the snow. Find out what's broken.

If you don't know what part is the transmission, and what's the torque converter, and there's no one in the area that will climb
under there with you? You have us to help...Pics, pics, pics.

Need a book? I have one. I have a few. One or more of us always have spares.

If you're soloing, and do "take a breath" before you start the search... and still buy a worse truck or a "Classic '87 Buick Regal Lead Sled",
so be it. I've done more stupid things in my life. That's the Darwinian Learning Curve.

Better, if you find that the alt., which SHOULD NOT move an inch, :jdp: can be secured, and that positive lead from the battery to the starter
that's hanging next to your passenger side exhaust header is not arching, and you climb under and find a cracked flex plate, broken nose
on the starter, or a burned out solenoid, like in the pictures, and you ACTUALLY ISOLATE the problem....you'll be so much better off than
anything else you could do to rectify the situation.

If you pull a flex plate from a junker, or find a matching one...or need a book. Or need a starter...And you get to that knowledge on your own
or with hands-on volunteer help, and you don't have the dough to get the parts (let's say, you DON'T buy a $1,200 cracked frame money-pit),
let me know.

We all need help some times. Not necessarily "URGENT" help.
But, I'm a grandpa. I can help.

Solid words from M17 . ;)

that_red_c10 02-22-2015 05:43 PM

Re: URGENT! Major problem! Need assistance!

wow man, Thanks so much for that!!! I guess me using the word urgent was a word that my brain just came up with since I was so worried and still kind of am. I'm trying to find places to work on the truck, but I don't have a job at the moment. Come May I will have a job at a junkyard, but I cant find a place to work on my truck where I wouldn't have to pay the money I have saved to parts for the truck. The $1200 truck I was either going to fix the cracked frame or just scavenge the full truck for the parts I need for body and or mechanics. I know some basic parts, like I've done oil and filter changes before, but I'm still new to working on them. Like I know what a transmission looks like and all. I'm just not great at fixing problems. There's also many parts I don't know exactly what they do or where they are and what they look at, but I've never really had the experience of fully working on a car myself before. Only my dad telling me things when I was around 9 or 10, but I didn't understand what he'd talk about. My parents are also pressuring me about it. My dad never liked my truck, and my mom likes it, but they are both bringing me down saying "I can't do it" or "you should just sell it". My dad hates the truck, not 67-72 trucks. But just mine. Again I thank you so much for the help. I don't know what else to say.
