Knocked out the cupped lower control arms. Started by cutting out the stock spring cups

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3fsgh7ha.jpg

Used 3/16" plate to fab the "cups"

Finished pair...

Re: Bagged 65 c10. AKA the periwinkle pile

Progress has been slowed some over the last week or so. Lost hardware for the front end and some other small issues. Anyways we got back at it yesterday

After mocking up the upper bag plates for the front end i realized that the bag wasnt centered in the lower control arm cup. It wasnt even close realy. So i re drilled my mounting holes and cut out the large fitting hole with the plasma

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psqtgia1lm.jpg

After that the front end went together fairly well. We got the cpp disc brakes, drop spindles, full front suspension on and mocked up and tested the air ride out. Everythings lookin good

Does anyone have a picture of the no limit rack and linkage hooked to the stock steering shaft ? Im assuming since the linkage is run through a carrier bearing on the framerail and the stock steering shaft is run through a bearing at the firewall, i can just make a linkage piece to join the two at any point on the stock steering shaft?

look at this install. It is the one that Rob did on a 65 or 66. Look starting at post 48, there are pics of the steering shaft...

Re: Bagged 65 c10. AKA the periwinkle pile

how many inches did you pancake the cross member ?

greengrenade 03-21-2016 03:54 PM

Re: Bagged 65 c10. AKA the periwinkle pile

I did the crossmember 1.5" which was about the max to make the rack mount work, although i still had to modify it extensively. Cupped the lower control arms 2" which was about as far as i was willing to go without having the cup hang below the arm itself and causing clearance issues. Read horror stories of guys getting cupped arms hung up on manhole covers etc

Re: Bagged 65 c10. AKA the periwinkle pile

thanks , the truck is looking good ..
I have a 79 crossmember I want to pancake for mine .
did you put plates on the 2 sides of the crossmember that are open
in some of the pictures ?

greengrenade 03-22-2016 12:46 AM

Re: Bagged 65 c10. AKA the periwinkle pile

I actually didnt. I figured those tiny plates arent gonna add much strength. That crossmember is so thick and the stamped top is crazy strong. Were gonna run the air line through that hole and through the frameside and then down to the rear of the truck inside the c channel

Re: Bagged 65 c10. AKA the periwinkle pile

More progress. The rear "pad" thats cast into the trans tail housing didnt have mounting holes so i drilled holes to utilize it for the mount

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psa3dc4v7i.jpg
http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...pses3s1cal.jpg

Fabbed up a trans crossmember. Heres a shot of the main tube and porterbilt style mounting brackets. I also welded the tube on the inside and outside of the side brackets for overkill strength

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psfnie4fcz.jpg
http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...pszlx2x46p.jpg

And some pics with the mounting pad in place

Re: Bagged 65 c10. AKA the periwinkle pile

Some more updates. Got the new upper links in for the four link. I started to fab up a crossmember to mount the links out of 2x4 tubing 3/16" wall

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psjnwqfba1.jpg
http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psmscyhmq3.jpg

Decided to do a driveshaft hoop instead of step notching over the drive shaft. Made the hoop out of some scrap plate and a piece of pipe from a bag cup

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psiunuw0if.jpg

Finish welded off the truck, made some gussets to compliment the trans crossmember

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...pseebudif6.jpg
http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psttfihdmf.jpg
http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psbqjeidfd.jpg

Started building perches to mount the front of the lower links. All 1/4" plate

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psxqn4osmf.jpg
http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psf2ac4ihh.jpg

Two gussets added on the underside and also boxed the rod end tabs. Finished pair

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psqi7sdehi.jpg

Then i welded the perches on and added a top gusset that extends all the way out above the link mounting point. It also flows into the crossmember smoothly and again compliments the gussets on the trans/4 link crossmembers. Excuse the screw drivers haha. We need two more bolts

damn... wow!!!
i've been following this, I wish my welds looked as good as yours, very good fabrications skills there!

how long you been 'playing' with metal?
what welder you using?

Re: Bagged 65 c10. AKA the periwinkle pile

Thanks man. I was sick of trying to find someone to do welding work for me, so i just saved up and bought a miller 211 and practiced like crazy. Watched a ton of youtube videos and did a bunch or research to teach myself haha. Ive been welding on and off for about 4 years now

Nice job on the welds. I just bought the same welder a few months ago.

Thanks dude the 211 is a beast. Ive had mine for about 4 yrs and its been a trooper

Good to hear! I did my research and this is what fit all my needs.

Re: Bagged 65 c10. AKA the periwinkle pile

Just out of curiosity, why parallel links in the rear? Why not triangulate one set and lose the need for a track bar.

Looks good man. Everything is turning out nicely.

Re: Bagged 65 c10. AKA the periwinkle pile

Thanks guys, and spooky we had originally tried to run a tri 4 link but couldnt get enought angle out of the uppers. If he was running a 9 inch i could have mounted the links on top of the rear housing and ran outwards towards the framerails. With the cast center section on the 12 bolt that wasnt an option

Boxed in and Finish welded the link brackets on the axle tonight

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...pskn3tac9o.jpg
http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8bztyy3e.jpg

Also tackled the panhard bar. Made a little mount out of 3/16" plate

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1cwb2ck0.jpg
http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psjpw3p25u.jpg

Made a little rear mount off the axle with a stud welded on the backside

Re: Bagged 65 c10. AKA the periwinkle pile

Thanks guys, long day today. Rear is pretty much finished except for some shock mounts. Heres some pics of the 4 link progress

Welded the bag plate to the lower links

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4xejyyan.jpg

Since i mounted the bag plate on the lower link so i could get a bolt into the bag on either side of the bar, the upper bag plates that we had on hand wouldnt work. The bolt/air port hole orientation was wrong. So i plasma cut them and spun them 90 degrees and welded em back up

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psjbdobwht.jpg
http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psjfrv4jwp.jpg
http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psgxxilgoe.jpg

Bolted to the bag

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psxetu9lly.jpg

I then had to make a tapered mount to kick the bag plate up on the front side a 1/2" to be level with the lower plates

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...pslrdwgfk6.jpg
http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psnyy7hkml.jpg

Upper bag mounts welded in with gussets to spread the load

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psya1irwaz.jpg
http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psremyuhaf.jpg
http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psinckvzdq.jpg

Pics of the entire 4 link welded in

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...pspiaywawx.jpg
http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...pssz3ezmqx.jpg

One last cool side pic, we actually got the bed floor cut out and did a quick mock up but my phone died ao no pics of that yet

Right on. Yeah, welding to cast sucks, just a thought for next time, you can do a truss over the center section and give a good welding surface for upper links. That is how my jeep is set up, and when it comes time to link and bag my truck, I am going to try and mimic it.

But anyway, I think your doing really nice work.! Looking good.

Re: Bagged 65 c10. AKA the periwinkle pile

More peogress, started by fabbing up some compressor mounts to hang off on the sides of the framerail

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...pso33ihr7u.jpg

Drilled holes in the top of the frame and welded nuts in flush

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psygknhscw.jpg
http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psseyzbv36.jpg

Brackets bolted down

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...pse6qloznz.jpg

Now to mount the tanks and also have all the air ride components mounted on the same removable "crossmember" style mount, i made a cross bracket out of 3/16" plate to connect both sides

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...psq6e4plr0.jpg

Off of that piece i built little perches for the air tanks

http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/...pswtchkgwo.jpg

And a pic of the tanks and compressors on. The accuair vu4 manifold will mount on the top of the bracket between the tanks but i havent gotten that far yet
