Glad to post them guys. Way too much history disappears without a trace.
Tim I am friends with a gentleman that just turned 80 last Saturday that has been painting signs since 1958. I have worked on and off with him since 1988. I was mentioning to him that I might want to put old school lettering on the side of my 68' panel when I got to that point of the project and he stopped this by so i could see what everyone was doing back in the day. I am not sure of the origins of the book of photo's but will ask him next time we get together. It is always a hoot talking with him because we talk for hours and basically have no idea what either one said for most of that time since we are both mostly deaf  We get by enough to get the jist of things though. This is the album I am working out of. Half of the pictures are still sitting on my desk awaiting scan. What you see in the book is what I have already posted here. Some of these pics are so old they have the cloth back to them and have to be real careful handling them. I think I still have about 50-60 more left to scan and post. Richard |
Re: Old pics
That's so cool. That's what I wondered, if they came from a sign "painting" company or an individual sign painter. You know the sign world and how it has and is changing. I have the buddy who is my age who feels like he's one of the last hand lettering sign shops. They are still out there, but far and few between. I bet my buddy would like to meet your buddy.

Re: Old pics
Thanks for posting Richard.
Lots of this type stuff gets lost forever. Will you have anything painted on your Panel ? Maybe like your Sign company. |
Re: Old pics
That is my plan. Even though it is my personal truck I thought it would be cool to hand paint my company name on the side of it and use it on occasion to make sales calls. I still have one older guy here who hand paints but also have a couple other local guys that are on board to help out as well. Give me a spray gun and I can go like the dickens, give me a brush and try to figure out what it is when I am done. Never did have the knack for the brush. At 1st I was going to just do a digital print to make it look aged & hand painted but I think it will end up hand painted or not at all.

Right on! Hand panted or none at all :metal:
Hey, when it comes to business, budget, fleet vinyl has it's place. But on classic trucks? Read line above. |

This is a Great thing you have done posting this Memories. In post #3 I think #14 is the Font that would Look Best on your Panel IMHO. That is my 2 cents worth. Dwayne |
Re: Old pics
Thanks a million. Looking through I couldn't help but notice how many delivery trucks ran grille guards back then. I hope everybody realizes all this artwork you see on these trucks is hand painted. Those bottles of beer, wine, etc are ages before wrap jobs and cut vinyl. Look at the moving vans and imagine a paint job of that scale.

I am still a ways off from the painting, hope my local guys are still alive once I get to the point of needing it. |
Re: Old pics
It would be cool to get a clear wrap job done on something nice. Then you get an airbrush artist like Chuck and have him do it up all rusted, dented, and crapped out looking. Everything else on the truck is beautiful but at 50' it looks like a turd with nice wheels, grille, bumpers, etc.. He could make it look like there are patches screwed on, maybe made out of an old sign cut up, a series of rust holes that are like bus windows with mice traveling along. I think you get the picture. Or restore a truck real nice and painted, then do a wrap paint wrap job. I know, like paying for two paint jobs. But you won't be sorry lie the other guys when the fad goes away and their trucks look ike crap again
