Re: ??12 V Electric Air Conditioning Compressor
Rencool says they don't sell the compressor by it's self but some searching shows this website that at least did offer it. AS B-Mac said "expensive" https://streetfx.myshopify.com/produ...=5730219950118
Evidently those are an Australian item here is another link https://www.maddair.com.au/Online-St...ric-compressor Thats 1,178.32 United States Dollar at today's rate, still spendy. |
Re: ??12 V Electric Air Conditioning Compressor
I suppose if you're building a 1300 hp racecar then another $1200 for personal comfort is a small price to pay.
Looks like the streetfx company has 10 left in stock. Also listed here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/RENCOOL-MD1...XO8H:rk:1:pf:0 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tesla-Model...y2p:rk:63:pf:0 Some interesting info from folks working on DIY electric cars: https://www.diyelectriccar.com/forum...ns-189978.html |
Re: ??12 V Electric Air Conditioning Compressor
This has peaked my interest. I'm having a 292 built with 4-71 blower, dry sump, crank fired ignition. I also am expecting a cross flow 12 port head. So I have some space issues in my 53 1/2 ton. No distributor helps. I have electric power steering. Also have electric vacuum pump and electric radiator fan. I have a serpentine harmonic balancer and water pump. I will be running duel batteries and have 130 amp alternator. It would help if I could mount the compressor somewhere other than on the front of the engine. I realize they pull a lot of power. Do they work well? Can I expect the same performance as a belt driven unit. It would free up space and make the serpentine bracket setup easier. Thanks for your time and any advice.

Re: ??12 V Electric Air Conditioning Compressor
Mick53 I'd say that they are pretty well as new to most all of us here as they are to you.
I'm thinking that they may be used in those big road train trucks that they cross the outback in Australia with and run off auxilary batteries when the trucks are parked and the diver is getting sleeper time. if you study the Rencool site a bit they have a lot of pieces for applications like sleepers or campers. It would be well worth doing some studying on them though. I don't really want a compressor on my 292 because it messes with the look I want to present On my flathead powered model A the compressor hanging on the engine really blows the look but we have some serious trips planned for both rigs and my wife earned her creds for riding 2500 miles one way in 100 + temps in the 48 with no AC 37years ago in spades when we made a trip to Texas in the truck in the middle of a 45 day 100 degree heat wave down there. |
Re: ??12 V Electric Air Conditioning Compressor
I'm thinking that Prius, Tesla or other electric or hybrid car electric AC compressors are too high of voltage to use in a 12 Volt rig. Looking up one for a Prius they run 200 + volts three phase.

On the Tesla club site they say the compressor is run on high voltage while the fan is 12V https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/thre...battery.71687/ Here https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/thre...s-model.52971/ One of the participants says the Tesla compressor is 400V |
Re: ??12 V Electric Air Conditioning Compressor
It seems they all run on 200 volts 3 phase. It is just a matter if the inverter is internal or external. I like that the Rencool cools everything with the return gas. More research needed. One of the reasons I went with electric power steering was to get rid of the pump and hoses. Put compressor under the cab. Get their condenser 15" x 15" x 2" with fan, $330. and put under the truck. Run the hoses up the corner of the firewall inside to the evap. Nice and clean. I'm leaning.

Re: ??12 V Electric Air Conditioning Compressor
Interesting. Post 8 in the thread I linked reported it was working on 12V. Probably just an internet rumor.
