Is that an SM420 ???

Dang, it's been so long since I replaced the TO bearing in my old C-50, I don't remember much what it looked like except it was Big.

I replaced the 420 with a NV4500. That thing was HEAVY!

Yeah, I just cut a chunk of a great big log for a support and slid the 420 back just far enough to get the bearing off/on. Of course that was about 35 years ago and I had no idea what model number transmission it was at the time. I just knew it was a big truck transmission.

Oddly enough my little C-10 would have had the SM420 also.

I sure liked those. They always shifted so nice.

What a cool truck!! I have some questions if you don't mind.

1. What year and model Freightliner did you use for the front axle? Did it bolt right up? I know these trucks and the medium/heavy duty big trucks all use a 34" wide frame. I want to find a big disc brake axle for my truck.

2. What size tire are you running? Is it the 255/70/22.5? That is a common size for guys who lower their semi's.

3. What did you use for the brake master and proportioning valve? I'm thinking about hydro boost but wasn't sure if it would push enough fluid and pressure.

4. Are you running power steering? If so what model did it come from?

Thanks!

Hi, I love your build! Great work!! I have a few questions. I have a 68 C50 without the tow hooks.

I was hoping you could send or post a pic with a closer look at the bolt-hole pattern and the hooks themselves if you have good pics.

Also, I'm not sure if I missed a picture or not but was there an option code listed in the glove box for the hooks?

I appreciate any info and help! Here's a pic of my project. :):flagw:

Colgad hasn't logged on in over a year but here's a pic of my 67 with the tow hooks sitting on the frame. It utilizes the existing bolts for the front bumper plus 2 more behind it that have to be drilled out (4 holes to drill total). The bottom of the hooks are staggered to sit flush on top of the bumper and frame rail. Sometimes the hooks are listed on the SPID sometimes not, in my experience.
