Sounds like a good plan.
I was watching this video in the link
below today.
I thought about your project.
Fast forward to about 11:30.
He makes a very good suggestion to Stain the bottom and sides.
He shows the example of what it will do if not protected.

Do yourself a huge favour and take the bed off. Much easier that way.

So far I haven't run into any issues working with the bed on (probably just jinxed myself)

Oh, you can do it with the bed on. It's just easier with it off. First one, I did flat, on stands. Sliding underneath about a hundred time for nuts. On the second one, I stood the bed upright. It is MUCH easier to do it that way.

Slow progress .... Made a template to trim the board that goes around the wheel well, and routed it out . Too bad the holes didn't line up on the boards and cross sills. I will make some plugs and fill them.

Very S L O W progress due to a hectic schedule and a long honey do list.
Old ply wood is out ! Planks were trimmed and rabbet cut down to 3/4 to fit under bed and cut to fit around and under wheel wells. still need to sand and finish the wood.
On a plus side I picked up a complete set of Stainless bed strip off of Long bed fleet minus hardware for.......50.00!
I will post pics tomorrow stay tuned

At least you got your priorities in order.
Job, Honey Do list and then truck.
Nice score on the trim.

Some updates on install. boards are in,still have to seal or stain.
Not sure which way to go on the 3" center board I was going to put one strip straight down the middle or maybe two strips on either side of it.

That's going to look great when finished. I think having a strip down each side of the middle would look good, and it would cover the gaps

Re: tongue and grove for truck bed floor?

When I read the title of this thread my first reaction was "NOOOOOOO" because just a few weeks ago I removed a tongue and groove wood floor from my 67 stepside bed. Some PO decided tongue and groove with 50 carriage bolts was a good idea. Yes 50, I counted them. After careful consideration I decided the 4-1/2" grinder and an air hammer were the proper tools for the job. The cross sills have way too many holes in them now but they seem solid.

As to the work I have seen here I actually like it a lot. The color variation looks great and should make a nice looking and unique floor when complete. Look forward to seeing it.

My bed is now in pieces as the front panel and rear sill were too rusty to save. I'll strip the bed sides this fall/winter and try to get all the parts to put back together by spring. Hopefully, maybe. You guys know how these projects go.

Looks good. Leave the holes, no need to plug them.

Looks great! :metal:

I guess I'm too late with this suggestion, but if anyone else is interested, I used Trex in the bed of my Suburban. Super durable and comes in different wood grains. I used the "fascia board" size, which is thinner but wider than the standard Trex deck boards. I think it could be a great choice for an open bed since it is more weather durable than wood.

How much total for the trex boards?

Sorry, I don't remember the exact cost, but I didn't think it was unreasonable. I had to special order the fascia boards from the "warehouse hardware store", and if I remember correctly they come in 12 foot lengths. Check the Trex website for the exact specs and the various wood grains that are available. Hope this helps.

I used 10' Trex fascia boards. They go on sale.
