well if i was you i would just hunker down with some 10 cheapos.... until i had the cash to have someone make duplicites of the originals and recover each bench, starting with the front of course... you will be much happier and pleased with the out come.

New grill trim installed then finished cleaning all the old sound deadener and crap off the floor with some acetone. Started installing carpet after fixing some floor rust issues last weekend, then located the two carpet hold down strips I picked up from Sharpie. Next week motor goes in and install the newly black powder coated 15X8 rims with 33' BFG AT tires.

Just found the link to your build thread. Looks like a great project. My suburban came out of Arizona also. I had to replace all the rubber since it had been cooked by the sun. But you can't beat the rust free sheet metal. Can you post the exact size and brand of the tires you are installing. I am also in the process of trying to determine what is the best size tire to put on my truck. Currently a 265/75/15 is as large as I can find for a tire that is not an off road type tire.

Some progress.....
Dash near complete, just need to install ashtray and paint column/wheel.
Disassembled rear seat and painted brackets they looked bad.
Ordered set of braided stainless brake lines to replace rubber lines front/rear. Installed new rear axle hard lines and rebuilt rear brakes with all new parts.
Front wheel cylinder rebuild kit's $5 at napa. They want's $65 each for new cylinders, guess odd ball wheel cylinders on 68 4X4's sure ain't cheap yikes!!!!!!

Engine's in... then slowly wiggled transmission and transfer case into place.
Dam those are a beast to put in alone.... nothing like putting a starter in.

Some shots of install of trans and engine.
Find a friend to help ya put the trans/transfer case in, lots of back and forth doing it alone.

Nice job with the hoist from above. I've mounted a couple of manual transmissions by myself and it sure does take a lot of wiggling. I can't even begin to imagine the fun it must have been with that NP205 hanging off the back too.

Looking sharp!

The pictures of the trans/tcase going in gave me shivers, since I have done that on my burb twice by myself. But when I did the body off I put the trans/tcase, and the engine in all at once with a fork lift.
I was all proud of getting away with out having to do that by myself, but when the body went on and I started to connect everything. Guess what.. I forgot to put the clutch fork in when I had it all apart! :banghead:  I can laugh about it now I guess.

I am saving up to do my bench seat overhauls (cushions and covers) on all 3 benches, which is huge money to do because of all the materials and labor for 3 benches.

I'd love it if you could take detailed pictures of your current benches, because that is the pattern I am going with but in the original lite green and black vinyl/fabric.

Chris,

I cut some of the material off the bench seats and am sending to SMS Auto fabrics in Canby Oregon for a quote. I'll make sure they know you are looking for the same material for your rig. I can also send you a small patch of the material. PM me you mailing address if you want a sample pc.

Yeah putting the Trans/Tcase in major pain in the ass, fork lift sounds much better! ;)

Looks like vectorit and I are going to both of our seat sets redone to original in the future. I will be bringing my seats in to SMS for stock seat cover templates for 67-68 burb's in original fabric.

Getting very close to some road time now that the snow's flying..... looks like right around 10 weeks from delivery to driving.
Rear portion of rear drive shaft getting shortened 5 1/2" since it originally had a rockwell T221 and now a NP205 Tcase. Used a piece of plywood to mimic carrier bearing mount location until I finish fabing one up out of 3/8" plate, it is no where near the original location, see link - http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=282516

The front drive shaft length is perfect since was from a 69 with a NP205. BFG AT's getting mounted next weekend on the rims. Finish installing a few interior pc's new shocks and new exhaust and call it done till the spring. :)

Still have not put the 4" lift on I'm more interested in driving it for now, lift consist of.

nice!:) keep it up. to bad about the driveline.

Mt Man Chad 11-14-2011 06:35 PM

Re: Project "Daa BURB" - 1968 Chevy C10 4X4 Suburban

I knew it had to be shortened, the NP205 is a bit longer and output shaft is on top not like the 221 is located the bottom of the transfer case.
No big deal, I had a bud who works at a driveline shop and does it for free for me.

This project is coming together quickly and nicely! Good work Mt Man Chad!

Question for you…what did you paint the firewall and dash with? Spray gun, spray bomb, etc? It looks great.

It's moves under it's own power after 10 weeks.
installed shortened/balanced drive shaft and fits perfect with new carrier bearing mount. Used the string trick between front U joint and rear axle to place the carrier bearing on the money.
Traded a few truck parts for a nice set of 31" X 10.5's BFG's till the spring, then the 33's and the 4" lift goes on. Also the correct 68 style air cleaner assembly finally was caustic dipped I picked up from Sharpie, just need to paint it.

Only a few steps left till it's really road worthy.
Install new wind shield, new gas tank and finish up a couple misc items.
She ain't super pretty but..... it's sound driver mechanically from front to back.

Short video of startup after everything was installed.

oh :jdp: man i was checking this build daily for updates! glad it was good one! just subscribed to your channel. the burb is super nice very cool patina out side very nice redone interior on the inside! the rims tires... all of it you hit the nail on the head. are you going to get any hub caps for it??? maybe buy 68 1/2 on hub caps and cut the centers out of two, that have dented rusty messed up centers ,so its not a complete waste?
