Re: Digging Holes For Shop Today!
Only on suggestion. Put down a vapor barrier down before pouring your concrete. My contractor pulled mine up and now I pump out 8 gallons a day with a dehumifier. The cement guys will say that the concrete will not cure fast enough but the floor will sweat forever.

Did you add gravel over your site before the pour ? My fill was river run I think they called it than we added a couple inches of 5/8 crushed rock in hopes that what moisture does come up wont wick thru like it would with a dirt base. |
Re: Digging Holes For Shop Today!
The fiber is only for reinforcement, like wire mesh. Make sure they add a vapor barrier and make dern sure they cut your expansion joints THE SAME DAY. They should be 1/4 of the thickness deep and spaced appropriately (based on thickness as well). I can't tell you how many times I've had to inspect failed concrete due to a lack of expansion joints.

Re: Digging Holes For Shop Today!
I had 6 inches of 5/8 minus and 6 inches of sand and the water comes up like a fountion. Put it down at all cost. Pit run doesn't stop a thing.

2nd snow this year , might be it for the year ? Seattle area usually doesn't get much . Almost done with exterior ! Notice the huge man door in back.
Handy for removing lawn mowers , wheelbarrows etc. w/o dragging past cars. :gi: |
Re: Digging Holes For Shop Today!
Nice shop..Who is building it for you. I live in maple valley not to far from you. Im looking in to doing a shop. Hopefully sone than later.

Re: Digging Holes For Shop Today!
Nice looking shop. Come on up when you have it finished, Ill need some experienced hands up here :)
We are going to put in a shop here next to our house. Only have room for an 18x28. (My wallet couldn't afford a larger one anyway). We've been waiting a couple of months for the city and county to ok our permits and they finally came through. Now I have to do a little site work and wait for the contractor to fit us in. Sounds like its going to be early spring-ish. |
Re: Digging Holes For Shop Today!
Thats comming along good. Looks good too. What day did you get the snow? I didn't see any this weekend.

Was a 1000 sq.ft. bachlor pad without garage I added a 880 sq.ft. attached. for those that have asked about me helping them build theres  It took me years to finish (neighbors must have loved that) . Now I am writing a check! actually getting some great FF miles on the Visa card ! |
Re: Digging Holes For Shop Today!
Ran into my salesman at the homeshow last night , asked him where my garage doors were ? My stepson called last night and said he saw them put them up ! They did they just didn't close them so they weren't visible (DUH)
So only have concrete left and theyre phase is done ! |

The best thing to do with the expansion joints is to put the foam caulk-backer into the deep holes, and fill them with caulk. Saw joints can probably just be caulked. B |
Re: Digging Holes For Shop Today!
Most cracks will happen over a period of time, generally not right after being poured. If they do happen right away, you have more problems. You can fill the contraction joints with caulking or anything that doesn't harden. You want whatever you put in there to be able to expand/contract with the concrete.

The roof alone was thousands more but looks so much better IMHO than the typical siding type roof . And its sheeted underneath so its stronger and that dreaded steel building sweat issue is less . adding windows and larger man door , insulated garage doors . Around here you can get a cheap building , which if it were in my backyard I may have, for around 8k . Mine on the other hand is far from done , so it'll keep costing for a very long time. Lets just say I could have bought a new Chevy truck with change left over . |

Re: Digging Holes For Shop Today!
Looking good. Your cuts should work, how deep did you make them? 3/8" to 1/2" inch should be fine.

Doing a diamond around the 2 center post then connected them . Not sure if there is a rule of thumb as to how close to make them but since my posts are mostly 14 ' from each other thats what I'm doing. And maybe one more where the rear Garage door apron goes . |
