I took a bunch of parts to be powder coated. I used BR+F Spray in Santa Clara. I'm really happy with how they turned out.

Had the Transmission rebuilt. I cleaned it up and painted it using spray can aluminum paint.. I put a couple coats of primer on first.

Engine arrived from MotorWerks . I went with their Stage 2 350. The crate it came in was wrapped up really nice and they delivered it directly to my house.

Thanks, mx289.. I love the new KTM 2 strokes. What kind of riding do you do?

I've ridden Yamaha's and Honda's prior to switching to the Orange side. If you ride mostly trails I'd go with the XC model, but if you're like me and ride mostly track than the SX is the way to go. My only complaint and it's not really that bad, but the first thing I would change on my KTM is having the suspension re-valved and sprung for your correct weight. I haven't done mine yet, but it my first upgrade I will do. In stock form it beats the crap out of me sometimes.. Through the woop sections is feels very march mellow, like.

You're making great progress. Keep up the steam, because once you slow down, it's hard to kick back into high gear. You'll be driving in no time.

Re: Attempting my first build 72 K5

I might need some help here. I'm looking to replace the bearings and seals since they're already out.. Are axle shaft bearings and wheel bearings referred to as the same part?

I was going to order these from Rock Auto
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...780&cc=1029259

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...925&cc=1029259

And I also found these under Axle shaft bearing section.

http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/more...586&cc=1029259

Do I need both an axle shaft and wheel bearing if I'm replacing all the bearings?

I'm trying to place this order today so I can get them in this weekend, but i want to avoid ordering wrong or duplicate parts.

Thanks

Re: Attempting my first build 72 K5

I realized I asked a dumb question.. My real question is. When I dissembled the front axle, did I remove the axle shaft bearings? (the only thing I didn't take apart was the differential plate and ring & pinion)

You need the inner and outer bearings (the tapered ones) and the axle bearing,(needle bearing). The needle bearing is pressed into the spindle. When you look inside the spindle on the side where the bolt flange is, you will see that needle bearing

Re: Attempting my first build 72 K5

@Sockalaminski - Yup, you're right. I went home after work and thought, why don't I just look at the parts I took a part and see what they look like.. But it's funny because I'll be at work on my computer ordering all these parts, so a lot of times I go from memory.

@Pete - Thanks! I appreciate your insight on the bolts and nuts restoration part. My goal is to never see rust again, or at least for a very very long time so I want make sure I'm taking the right steps in my first phase of this restoration project

So I received my engine from MotorWorks last Wednesday. I noticed they didn't do that great of job painting it.

When I ordered the engine I told them I wanted Chevy Orange as the color. If you check out the pics you can clearly see they didn't cover it very well or in some spots, not at all.

If your ordered an engine and were expecting it to come painted Chevy Orange, would you be pissed about what you see here?

I made the problem right, by fixing it myself (see after pics)

However, I don't feel that I should have had to make it right and that they should have done a much better job. I'd be curious to hear other opinions on this because it's something that I'm currently bringing to their attention.

Man, You've got a lot of patience. Attention to detail is what separates a good build from a great one. Yours looks great so far.

You are right, motor looks much better properly painted !

As said, your attention to detail is what will make this truck great.Looking good.

(About riding,I only race mx nowadays.
I'am stuck on a 2st and i dont like YZ's so, KTM is my only option any more for a new bike i think. Or a Husky i guess, now they are owned by KTM. !
My herd of CR's need to be retired to the barn!
I have heard great things about them, hoping to ride one soon.)

@Sockalminski - Thanks for the compliments. 5 years ago I didn't have the patience I have now. I've learned over time this through many mistakes haha.

@MX289 - You don't like the YZ 2 strokes? I know lot's of guys who love them. I will say they have one of the best suspensions out of the box. It's to bad the new YZ's are the same as the 2006 model with updated plastics. For 2 Strokes I think KTM is the way to go now. They continue to innovate this line while the other brands discontinued them.
If you were close by, I'd take one of those CR's off your hands.. That bike rips!

Honestly,i bought a new 11' yz 250 and couldnt get comfortable on it.
Other, than the motor being mellow, and the suspension needing a revalve it was an ok bike.(Plus all that could be fixed with pesos.:ito:
I just didnt agree with the bike,i always felt like i was to tall for it.

So i sold it and back on my hondas i went.
I just cant sell them.I just buy more.

This week I've been doing more cleaning, sanding, and painting. I finished the Transfer Case, axle shafts, hubs, AC compressor, Tie Rods and a few other little parts.

Here' some pics

I'm not really sure if I'm liking the gloss black. It's almost a little to glossy. Masterseries Coatings only offered gloss or satin. What I really was looking for was a semi-gloss, 50-60%. The parts I had powder coated are 60% gloss and I think those look great.. I'm already to invested with time and money with the gloss. If it bugs me that much down the road, I'll redo it when I start the phase 2 next winter when I go to have the body painted.

Cleaned up the Alternator and Starter. Does anybody know what color the alternator from the factory was?

DeadheadNM 06-29-2014 10:02 AM

Re: Attempting my first build 72 K5

IIRC the alternator was bare metal. The t-case came in Chrysler Red

72K5CSTDarkOlive 06-29-2014 11:43 AM

Re: Attempting my first build 72 K5

Pete - I was debating between Chrysler Red and Chevy Orange, too. I went with the orange because I assumed that's how it came from the factory, in addition to when I pulled it out of my truck it had what looked like orange paint on it. I do like the way the red looks on there so I'll probably stripping the t-case later and painting red. I dont think it should take that look to strip off the paint I just put on there.

DeadheadNM 06-29-2014 11:56 AM

Re: Attempting my first build 72 K5

Either way it would look really good. Odd that Chevy would do these in red rather than orange but maybe shipped that way and because NP205s used for other non-GM 4wds?

Go some work done today. Doesn't seem like much because its a lot of tedious work.

1. Clean up my starter and painted . I used aluminum and flat black.
2. Clean up the AC/Heater plastic box, tubes, and painted the little bracket that's riveted on front, as well as some of the clamps.

For the ac tubes, I used steel wool and it made them look practically brand new. For the plastic box I cleaned it with simple green and a soft wire brush to remove all the dirt.

I'm ordering new motor mounts. The new motor is from an 87-95 gen II block, with casting numbers 880 or 638..

Can I use the original motor mounts or would i need different ones?

You can go with the original style mounts. Don't try to save money here, buy either Good rubber mounts or poly, but not the cheap imports, They fail in short order.

72K5CSTDarkOlive 07-01-2014 04:59 PM

Re: Attempting my first build 72 K5

I was planning on getting new poly ones. I just wanted to make sure the original style will work for my block since it's a Gen II

72K5CSTDarkOlive 07-02-2014 11:42 PM

Re: Bolts and nuts

My plan was to use all the original bolts, screws, nuts, washers, etc.. I went to a local plating shop that can do Zinc Black, Zinc Clear, and Zinc Chromate (yellow).. He quoted me $600 for all of them.. I was kind of sticker shocked but I do have quite a few. I was going to eat the cost because I know these guys do great work, however, he told me it will take 5 weeks. I'm kicking myself for not bringing these down to him sooner. I cant wait 5 weeks bc I'm starting to reassemble.

I'm not sure what to do.

Here's some options I'm considering;
1. GMC Pauls offers a complete bed less bolt kit.. just like the originals. But this only gives me the bumper bolts, bumper to bracket, battery tray, font and inner fenders, radiator support kit, hood hinge, hood latch, headlight bezel, cowl hardware.

I still have all my AC brackets, pwr str brackets, brake booster, power steer gear box bolts, cross members, brake/fuel line brackets/bolts, exhaust hangers, clips, and bolts/nuts. Starter bolts... the list goes on and on, but I think you get the point..

My goal is to have nice cleaning looking hardware that's resistant to corrosion and rust.

I'd be interested in hearing what others have done. I'd also consider shipping all this somewhere else that can do the zinc coating in a much quicker turn around time. Any suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks,
Mike

For that much money I would just buy new grade 8 hardware.

Re: Attempting my first build 72 K5

That's A LOT of $$ for phosphate coating, which in my experience is charged at $85-100 per "batch" and a batch can do a lot of small parts. I can send you the details for the local shop here in MT - would be hard for them to quote without seeing what all you need but maybe a pic would give them a rough idea. Buying new parkerized bolts/screw is pricey (at $0.40 - 0.90 per) and non-parkerized ones IMO look out of place.

72K5CSTDarkOlive 07-03-2014 12:25 PM

Re: Attempting my first build 72 K5

I think the reason they charge so much is because they wire clean each bolt by hand instead of using a tumblr.. This was the only place I could find in the area that does Zinc coating.

PM me the details of the local shop you used
