So it's started, these pics are from today 11/17/08. first is what the truck looked like after afew hours of work on Sat. 2nd pics is how it is setting as of 4:15pm. And last is what the fire wall looks like. the brown is not rust, thats the color from the factory, 3 paint jobs later this what i am looking at. not too bad. Dose anyone want a gas tank? if you come pick it up in Blairsville, PA 15717 then you can have it.

Re: Chop Tops ???
I seem to remember something about...
the only chop top that look ok, are the ones that the back glass is left stock size, but the bottom of the back window is lowered to match the bottom of the door glass height. And you gotta cut more outta the front pillars than you do the rear of the cab just to make it look level...??? There was an write-up on it in one of the truck mags a few years ago. A chop top is way easier to screw up the looks of, then it is a make look good. For every 1 good looking chop top truck, there is 29 terrible looking chop top trucks... I personally am lowering my '68 Fr=3" & Rr=5" and keeping the stock cab, complete with vent windows... but I like the classic look myself... which means no billet aluminum stuff anywhere... just my opinion.... your truck... built it how you want it. |

No white walls on the 20's. Just some low pros.
And i under stand what needs to be done in order to make a clean chop. I a even going to keep the drop rails. So i spent all day in the Basting booth. Let me tell you, if you havent media blasted, spending all day in a helmit with a 30 LBS hose straped over ur sholder is not a good day. But the out come was worth it. |
Re: Chop Tops ???
Here is mine, though it is not on a truck anymore;) We took 1 1/2" out of the front and 1" out of the back and leaned the post back. I usually don't like chops but I think it looked like crap stock.
I guess you could say mine is chopped and slammed:) BEFORE http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z...e72/cab010.jpg AFTER http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z...2/CIMG1476.jpg http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z...2/CIMG1478.jpg http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z...2/CIMG1479.jpg |

Re: Chop Tops ???
Chopped-n-Dropped?
Well that poses at least two significant problems for me. The least of which is with me being a rather tall guy @ 6'3" (And a bit clumsy I might add) I tend to bang my head upon entry/egress, and since I do not hold stock in Tylenol that option is pretty much a non-option for me. <Thumbs down> As far as Dropped...don't you live in PA? I think you may encounter a problem similar to me: Winter. Alaskan winters can be rough on a rig, even on only driven in the summer months, with our PFC=BHR factor (Precip + Freezing Conditions = Big Holes in Road) being rather high dropped is also out of the question. Up here in Alaska we have pot-holes that would bottom out a school bus. <Thumbs down> But in all seriousness, I do not wish to rain on your parade, or callously shoot down any dreams of...ugh...cuttin sheet metal, so if this bad boy is going to make the complete conversion and turn Trailer Queen then I guess I would say "Have at it, cut away!" just make sure you have long ramps...or stout rails! Peter, any updates on your cab?
|
Re: Chop Tops ???
Thanks, it's a 4" chop, roof sectioned in 4 pieces, skinned over the top, and no leaning of the posts, as this alters the angle of the windshield and you won't be able to use a glass windshield. :chevy:

Re: Chop Tops ???
Ill pass on the chopped top...

Re: Chop Tops ???
I have to agree...lowered, yes....chopped, no.
These trucks have such great lines and proportions...no need to alter them. Chris Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Chop Tops ???
Casey : As I have said before, and will say again. I love this truck! It is freakin perfect!

I am not a BIG fan of Chopped tops, I don't like it at all to be Honest
|
Re: Chop Tops ???
Many may hate, them, but I have an affinity to a truck that is chopped, if it is done right. I have one that is in th eprocess of being built, that I have in my garage and it works for me. That is what makes it stand out.

Thats the only chopped top I like. You basically ruin the cab top

Re: Chop Tops ???
I tell you.......those 60-66 look really good with a subtle chop!! That red truck above looks great to me!
I think I posted on another chop thread that it's hard to dare to go through all that work just to take off a little, but that's when they look good. Chip Foose always says to do just enough that they are not even sure if something has been done. |

I agree there is a fine line when approaching "too much".
|
Re: Chop Tops ???
Can someone explain to me, whats the purpose of Chop Tops ?..I like having a original looking truck, still can't get a grip on the purpose
|
Re: Chop Tops ???
Custom, different, personal, sometimes cool, sometimes bad-ass, taste, to get you to ask this question. lol
Some people love to have original restored trucks just like some people like original restored '32 Fords. I hate both. Let me rephrase.....I respect and admire both when going down the road but would NEVER own either. Tons of guys think a 600hp 496 in these trucks is flat stupid. I disagree. This is why the hot rod world spins in so many different direction. Original, race, pro-street, resto-mod, custom, rat rod/panita'd and on and on. |
Re: Chop Tops ???
Thought, I drive a standard cab truck all of the time and I want something that is unique and different. The chop top is a low-slung look that has a taste of the early rodders era and there will be many that do not like it, however if done right you cannot walk away from it until you look it all over. Even the most critical person has to look twice. You know you will.
|
Re: Chop Tops ???
If you Chop Top a Truck, is there any possible way to Restore the Cab back ?
I am a Original and Patina type of guy |
Re: Chop Tops ???
If it is made of metal, ANYTHING can be done!!! Would be far easier though to sell the chopped cab for $$$ and buy a different original cab.
|
Re: Chop Tops ???
Well I guess everyone has their Opinion, But I will never buy or do a Chop Top
