Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
I knew of a 58 GMC that was a long bed granny 4 speed . 8 hole rear end six hole front wheels. any way the main bearings where so loose the mains poured oil. when it was idling you could look at the front crank pulley and see it moving up & down. Made a heck of a racket. so they pull the pan and take all the main caps off. the crank is worn & the bearings are down to the copper. So what do they do. they take a flat file and file down the edges of both bearing halves until the bearings fit snugly on the crankshaft. Wrap the outside of the bearings with brass shim stock to take up the gap between the reduced in diameter bearing and the main caps & saddles. They put it back together and the starter wont start it. its tight barely rotates. so they pull it to start it. get it running and by some miracle it worked . I know it ran for ten years afterward. They used a 50 x50 mixture of engine oil and STP.:gmc2: the entire time those old geezer toothless hill folks where doing the job they had a Know it All Teenager Telling them it was a waste of time. They simply laughed at yours truly and stated during the depression they had fixed T models in worse shape and used honey instead of engine oil.

Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
The original Orrie, my grandfather, told me a story about dropping the pan in the middle of know where and using a piece of leather to tighten up a main to get back to town. He was also a fan of sawdust in transmissions to quiet them down. He also told be how you could count the number of cords showing on the tires and use that as a bargaining point to get a lower price. You have to work pretty hard to kill these old Chevy sixes.

Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
I thought I posted this hours ago..What I was saying was, I am going to keep everything Original. It could be something as simple as the Valves need adjusting or get the Distributor rebuilt..Where can I find a Distributor rebuild kit?? I am currently looking for one as I type this. Thanks Orrie and Old man I will keep that in mind
Currently looking at this. http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com...5ctsm06y44.htm I was told it could be bearings as I said in an earlier post, but I am starting to think it could be that the Valves need adjusted Also what type of Grease do I need to Grease the Distributor. It could be something as simple as that |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100

Orrie has been great to help as well as others. It gets confusing because you said it needs bearings now you say it may or it could be something else. I am not sure what the mechanics did for you but running some "tests" really wont indicate the bearings need replaced. Like mentioned above it will need to come apart and look at the bearings, then the parts associated to the bearings to determine if they were hurt and need attention also. to bounce from a total expensive engine rebuild to maybe just grease on the distributor is a big difference. I agree it may need a rebuild but that should not make it run like you say it is. Now bent or mis-adjusted valves will. I am not familiar with that motor but alot of the basics apply. It was asked if it runs better? Did the guy looking at it come up with any tuning issues and make any changes? I assume you changed the fuel filter I think that was mentioned. If the distributor has been out did it get put back in the correct order? That will make things pop if it is off. I know you are doing your best and looking for help I had hoped the mechanic would have done something for you, it sounds like it was a wasted trip? Let us know what all you guys did to come to the conclusions you have. Just trying to help Dave |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Thanks Dave and Orrie has always been a great deal of help to me , to be honest I am confused myself. He is going to come out when it isn't raining and adjust the Valves to see if it fixes anything.I also got a great deal from them, $200 for all of the Welding work on the truck.Biological Father knows a guy who can get all of my Chrome polished up.Also he can get my Original rims blasted and painted the original color.Looking forward to all of this being done

The Headlight buckets are finally finished
Took the carb off couple of days ago and had it rebuilt and put it back on |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Looking good.

Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Okay my friend set the timing to the Truck, we put the new spark plug wires on and Distributor cap, and Rotor..Checked one of the spark plugs and it was burned..I went ahead and bought ACDelco Spark Plugs...It runs but then cuts off at random times..The carb has been rebuilt..I've been thinking my Valves need adjusting badly
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Define burned? Dark black dry, black oily, etc.
If it is shutting off like someone flipping a switch, probably a loose or shorting wire in the run circuit? When just sitting or driving over bumpy road? Cold or at good running temperature? Did you change the condenser too (little metal can looking thing in the distributor)? You can isolate the circuit by running a jump from the positive battery terminal directly to the hot side of the coil (side that does not go to the distributor). Starter circuit will turn it over to get started. If it runs fine and does not quit start looking for loose bad wires. If still dies then in the coil/distributor. If it is stumbling and sputtering before dying then probably a fuel issue, but you have pretty much taken care of those except fuel pump. |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
It looked Black like really black and I was thinking might as well replace them.Could the Valves need adjusting?
The condenser looked fine to me. It cuts off when I am driving at normal condition, and as far as I know the Fuel pump has been replaced. If anyone has the 1bbl Rochester Carb...What size barb do I need to fit on the threaded emission barb |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Did you ever get a proper, clean fuel tank?
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Sure did Coral, Looking to get it here soon. The ignition condenser looks to be in great condition. How exactly do you see if the Points are in the correct setting?.The fuel pump has been replaced about 2 years ago(I believe) and it should be in great working condition. I need to take a photo of how the Fuel line is set up because to me it doesn't look correct because, I have an extra fuel line in this box and it seems like it needs to go somewhere..What size Barb fitting do I need to put on the Emission lines end to screw onto the Carb?
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
I meant the Vacuum line, it takes a fitting but what size? it needs to screw onto the Carbs fitting
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
So after rebuilding the carb, you are still using the old dirty small red plastic fuel can rigged inthe bed and wonder why you are still having fuel issues? You can replace, rebuild and clean your fuel system but if you are still running dirty gas you can expect the same outcome of the carb and fuel system being recontaminated with crap.
Point setting can be found in you chiltons manual. Condenser should not be inspected by a visual "looks good". It is electrical. |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
I'll clean it out alright? I know the Point Gap coral. I'm not 100% sure its a Fuel issue as it could be but it could be something else.I'm going to fix the Vacuum line first. I really need to get that New Gas tank
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
In the photo below it looks like the carb already has a fitting for the rubber between the carb and vac line? Or do you want to replace that fitting? Unscrew it and ask the hardware guy for one with the same threads and a barb to fit the hose size.
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Orrie I am thinking that is one of the many issues with this Truck, as Coral stated the Fuel Tank needs to be cleaned out and put a new filter in it..I just cant get the Glass filter to unscrew and put the new one in. I am hoping after all of this, it will be running well, although I may need to buy a new Vacuum Advance here soon, suspecting since it is 50 years old.

Today
I Put new fuses in New Coil New Thermostat (Learned a valuable lesson, the hard way) Grounded Brakes lights Checked out the Gas Tank I bought last week, and am going to get it cleaned and put it back into the truck Turn signal switch is shorting out somewhere..The right tail light isn't having brake lights, and turn lights.. I have done some testing and it is the Socket(I think) that is causing it because it is messed up on the inside Replaced the fuses.. The Oil gauge wire is loose? and I am going to ground it.. although the Oil Gauge stays in the middle? Makes no sense to me.. Where is the Flasher location? or does it have one? and if it does where does the prong go? I am working currently while I have no way to get fuel on the wiring.Currently doing research on here for more info Small Questions Does the engine need to be running for the Blower to run? Guessing so I have done some research on the Sending unit, such as cleaning the tip etc... I did that but haven't tried it yet because I cant get fuel( Plastic nozzle broke) I have determined that I have Electric wipers, I tried moving it and it wouldn't... Still wouldn't work, wondering if the Wiper motor is bad. |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
You're making good progress.
If you're talking about the heater blower it should run without the engine running but will only blow cold air. Kim |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Figured that Kim, I wonder if the resistor is worn out or so, however the thermostat was messed up so I replaced it yesterday.Cleaned the sender units tip. Heater isn't a priority I just wanted to see if it'd work. The right turn signal and brake light doesn't come on.. So I am assuming it's something to do with the wiring, I figured id end up getting a new rear harness because this ones been cut or something so many damn fuse links. Anyone know a better way to clean a tank?? I'd like to save some money if I can. If the distributor fails on me, I'm just going with an electric ignition because I don't want to worry about Timing, points etc.. Haven't tried to run it because of the fuel issue, but I replaced the bad hose before the fuel pump. Fuel line is done except for the Gas tanks lines, which shouldn't be hard at all because I found the hard line. How much rubber flex hose do I need to get? To the fuel line on the carb. Thanks in advance.i am trying my hardest to keep motivated on this truck. Got a awesome deal on welding, $200 for all of it. SCORE !!!!. I have also nearly replaced everything ignition wisely still have three spark plugs to go and condenser and points. When I get my paycheck I will pursue that.

Thanks man, it's going to take some work but it'll get there
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
I am having issues with the right side of the Brake and Turn signal lights. Replaced the fuses and still nothing, starting to think its switch related. When I pull the headlight switch on and turn the blower on, it WORKS !!!! but it only works on Low, it is Resistor related I am sure. Replaced the Thermostat and the gasket as well, should fix some problems that I am dealing with. Grounded the Oil Gauges "Gray" Wire to the fuse box
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Look at my reply to you post in the "what did you do today" thread, multimeter will save you a lot of time tracing electrical problems. Sounds like you are making good progress.
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
I replaced Two more plugs, and they're all Fouled and smell like gas still have one more to go.. Part of the old thermostat gasket wouldn't come off so I put the new one on (Stupid move) and it still leaks so I am going to buy another new one and do it properly, What can I use to get an old gasket off?? and now the damn inline fuel filter is leaking everywhere, the Clamps that go with it ain't doing jack squat I may need to buy those small screw clamps to go on there so it won't leak anymore. The Truck is turning over like it whats to go now.
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
I have an old 1/2" wood chisel I use for gasket removal. You can get the big chunks off with a stiff putty knife. Wire wheel works if the part is small. Tedious work. Screw band clamps will work better jus do not over tighten, that will cause premature deterioration of the hose.
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Because those plier clamps are a pos, and its causing that leak to form around the hoses. Thank God it wasn't fully running because I would of had a Burnt truck!!! The glass one was leaking a little bit so I had to retightened the bowl.. I am trying to keep motivated with this truck, but looking underneath the dash there was more rust etc.Do they make patch panels where the rear fender bottoms, the steps go? because mine are rusted badly

Scored an original "59 Breather today for $20 !!!
He will sell me another Better distributor for $40 !!! |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
They make every panel needed to rebuild the whole bottom of the cab and doors. Lots of build threads on it, key points are making sure your doors and glass fit before tackling the bottom. Then cross brace the cab to nothing moves. Factory manual shows the sequence thing were installed and welded. If you look carefully at the panels you can see the overlap sequence too. I got lucky and only had to do infill pieces not the whole thing.

Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
He told me he would pull the Distributor out of the '59 Apache that he has, and see if it is in better shape than mine and throw in the Vacuum Advance ... Like I said $40 !!!!! SCORE

Thankfully its not the Fuel pump Glass bowl
I've been getting good deals on a lot of things lately |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
I run the glass sediment bowl on mine with no problems. Just get a new gasket, its like $3 from classic parts. In a pinch you can make your own.

What do y'all think on my Scores?
I am going with Electronic Ignition here soon to help with things |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
you running the pertronix kit or the newer HEI set up? I didn't know distributor were worth that much I have a shed full fo them for back up :)
