Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
My wife surprised me for my birthday this year and she worked with local hot rod builder and louver specialist Chip Quinn to have him put a sweet Vintage Air A/C unit into my '64. It was a six week job and it required the concoction of many, many excuses to as where my truck had gone. Chip did a great job as usual making the unit look very tight and trick attached to the 355 under the hood. Just the compressor tensioner alone is a beautiful and well thought out piece. I am very happy with the build and even more happy that I scored such an amazing and thoughtful wife. Thank you Dayna. I love you.

Grant had said some one was asking about which crank pulley I used in this installation. That was a bit of an odyssey on this one. See, for some reason, this truck was equipped with a rudimentary batch of smog controls from the factory in '64.... I know that doesn't sound even reasonable, but every body that I have talked to about this and shown it to simply scratches their head and wonders, too. It was ALL factory, as well. But the lower pulleys that came on this truck were like no other Chevy stuff that I or any body had seen, and were slightly different off set than others that I had here. All had Chevy part numbers. So, long story short, I used the stock cast lower three grove pulley, but needed a to groove upper. I found what was supposed to match via a Chevy truck parts guy in California via E-bay, but when it arrived it matched the other "standard" Chevy short pump two groove pulleys I had around, which put it about 3/8" off from the lower. I lucked out in finding a guy in far east Mesa that runs a small business parting these trucks, that didn't wrinkle his nose and tell me I was nuts as I told him what was up... And he just happened to have another "oddly" equipped '64 in.... with a two groove water pump pulley! All matched and was well. I used a Vintage Air direct fit kit on this truck, and would recommend it to anybody, but I do have to mention that due to things such as the fresh air inlet hoses on Grant's truck, I did end up modifying lots of it. About the biggest was the compressor mount. When we did the engine earlier this year, I noticed that the "Corvette" style 2 1/2" ram's horns that Speedway is reproducing had accessory mount on both sides as opposed to the standard's driver's side only. Taking advantage of this fact, instead of running the Vintage Air semi kinda ugly self supporting compressor bracket, I made up one that would utilize that Corvette ram's horn's mounts... Hard to see in photos, but it looks like it belongs there since the beginning of time. |

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
Replaced kick panel, large section of floor, and rocker panels on passenger side. Very time consuming, took better part of 2 days solid work. First time doing it, though, and I am a total noob with welding body panels. This was a great place to get experience, and I learned a lot about settings, gas flow, techniques, etc. Driver's side should go much faster. Then I can put in Peel and Seal, some closed cell foam, and my vinyl mat that Markeb01 used in his truck, and call my cab sort of done, haha. So much good information on this forum, love everything about it.
Sorry no pics, my camera lens on my phone is scratched horribly, and everyone has seen pics of this stuff before. |

So to cure detonation, I been adding 100 octane. Swapped in yellow spring for secondaries on my 670 Holley Street Avenger. The results are a nose up rear slip with wheel hunt for grip.

Preparing to do some body stuff soon... hopefully. :metal:
Removed the bumper and headlamp rings/headlights. Discovered that my adjuster screw (female sides) are broken/old and appear to be having a hard time finding a good set of NOS replacement headlamp secondary mounts. Sigh. Might have to legitimately look into converting to a Chevy front end soon. :waah: Don't mind the messy carport, please. I'm working on a lot of projects right now. Especially if my wife asks... Oh, the next step is also taking off that beautiful white grille/headlight surround panel... As soon as I figure out how (3 bolts in the fender, yea?) |

Re: What did you do to your truck today part III
I have decided to do a dual update, running over two days this weekend.
Started by going over to mate Martins place at 07.00 on Saturday with another mate, Ian in tow to help him with the final stripdown of his chassis and then to get it into the garage and then to move other bits about, including the cab into the carport so that he can start the welding marathon he has ahead of him. I will let the pics do most of the taking....... Needless to say, there is a lot of rust and we managed to strip off a few bolt heads. Fortunately Martin has purchased many new parts for his build. This is the lever bar we used on quite a lot of the bolts n nuts. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps4ab5bf86.jpg Because I was there to take photos of the progress, I ended up working for a change. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pseade8bf7.jpg it was not a sunny day...... http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ps461cb182.jpg Pooping my pants or farting ? http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps981f369b.jpg Unfortunately we did not have any smaller tools. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pse20d7646.jpg U Bolts cut as there are new parts in store. http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ps72bd9ba4.jpg Getting the rear spring off nearly gave Martin a hernia. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psfce64ea6.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psa54f8395.jpg Between fetching cups of tea and biccies, we did allow Ian to pack the tools away. http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ps196c3606.jpg DONE !!!!! http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps4d2ed1e4.jpg Next up we moved the cab in under the carport and then all pilled into cars and went back to my place. ££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££ ££££££££££££££££££££ So back at my place I pulled the truck out and got all the bits ready. But not before I had pre-cooked 20 Peri Peri chicken wings and got some sausage ready for Ian to do us a BBQ later. He was also on kettle duties..... Just starting to take the front wheel off. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psdbd17bef.jpg Old vs New shocks. New shocks were ordered at -2" http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psab778294.jpg Martin and I getting our heads together. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps14001aca.jpg And then it got spicy...... Martin was all over me like a cheap suit. There was a lot of huffing and puffing to get old nuts and bolts loosened. Thank goodness these trucks are built in Man Size. In the mean time Ian kept us tanked up with tea and coffee as well as passing, collecting spanners and taking some photos. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps14001aca.jpg At some point, after much bashing, we got the spring removed. It seems the original spring was cut down by 2 inches and refitted, and over time it, along with the shock absorber had become very saggy. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps35c7fb38.jpg Once done with the drivers side we reassembled and put it back on the floor......... Using my special measuring stick expectantly, to see where the 2 inch lower than standard shocks n spring had taken us, I was shattered to find the front stood 2.5" higher than before. AAAAARRRRGGGHH !!! At this point it was getting to be dark, and Ian had cooked us all the spicy wings, which we ate directly off the fire/grid along with the sausage in hotdog rolls so we pushed the truck back into the garage till this morning, when Martin was back at my place by 07.45 (It is truly great to work with someone who gets up at a sensible time) My appologies to Martin's Amanda and my Nicola for having tosit around while we got down and dirty. After Martin left I posted up threads on the Chevy C10 board and Garage Journal and Rods n Sods looking for advice. Much was offered. So when we pulled the truck out this morning and jacked it up, I crawled underneath to inspect yesterdays fittings. YUP..... The spring had not been located so after some grunting and adjusting, we dropped it down again and found the new height was 10mm taller than the old parts. PERFECT !!! http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps58048282.jpg On to the passenger side, which took a lot less time to do. By 11.00 Martin had left to go shopping, and I shut shop to get out and spend some time with Nicola who was waiting patiently for us to finish. Next job will be getting the rear suspension sorted, possibly also replacing the lowering blocks. A couple of other observations on this job included non matching nuts and bolts keeping the suspension together, some very worn fittings and also front brake lines that need replacing sooner than later. Shock absorber top mount bolt. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pse2e9f7f5.jpg And lastly, the parts that came out. Original springs cut down by a coil, giving 2" lowering. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psf8799ff6.jpg That's all folks. |
