This truck is TOO damn cool. I have never seen a 292 k30 so i have to build one. i even want the same color and everything! Love the truck and the plow video!

Thanks! I really like driving it. It does what it's designed to do very well. Never going to go down the highway at 80 or pull a horse trailer, but it pushes snow great.

Time to push a little snow... truck ran great but the plow developed a few problems. Doesn't want to angle left and flops around like a limp noodle side to side when pushing. Meyer still does a good job of putting old service manuals on their web site so I can trouble shoot it and hopefully make the repair. They are really pretty simple.

Re: 1984 K30 Project Plow Truck

That looks like too much fun! A buddy of mine has a plow on an old square sitting in his grove, I would love to put a plow on my winter beater, but driveway is small and I don't need a bunch of new friends every time it snows. I love the way the cab lights look, cool truck.

Re: 1984 K30 Project Plow Truck

She looks good plowing snow.

Have you changed the oil in the plow yet? A little water in it can be a big pain. It tends to get in through the full vent on top or by the seal on the ram.

An easy way to determine if you got water is to park it inside and allow it to warm up. Try using it and if it works well until it gets cold, it's likely water in the oil.

It wouldn't hurt to remove the solinoid/ valve assembly's and make sure they're clean. Also there's a couple of filters that you'll want to pull and clean on the base of the pump.

MTCK 12-05-2016 08:21 PM

Re: 1984 K30 Project Plow Truck

Thanks for the pointers. I dropped the oil and replaced the filters yesterday. Also pulled the fittings off the power angle cylinders emptied and filled them. Left angle is what was sticking so I tried to pull the A solenoid. Need a deeper 1 1/4" socket so didn't get that done. Put it all back together and she worked like a champ! Pulled out of the shop and it still worked. Drove 10 minutes home at -31F and no left angle. I think the A solenoid is sticking or weak so I'm going to get the right tool and take it apart. Maybe I just shouldn't plow at -30...

Reminds me of a plow truck I built back in 2010.

Re: 1984 K30 Project Plow Truck

I remember your build! Still have Cletus and pushing lots of snow? We are supposed to get a foot tomorrow and I can't wait. I'm sitting at the shop getting the cold front put on my crew right now but should be fixing a couple nagging problems with this truck instead...

palposity 12-28-2016 09:08 PM

Re: 1984 K30 Project Plow Truck

Sadly, Cletus was sold after a series of ill-fated decisions on my part a few years back. and this is the worst winter so far since I sold Cletus. I was pleased to have the experience building it though and ready to get more momentum behind my other truck. Just need this darn cold winter to go away so I can spend more time on it.

I do want another K series sooo bad right now! I guess I will have to live vicariously through you!

Ah bummer well I know how that goes. If I had unlimited funds and space I would never sell a truck but neither of those things are true.

Bet this is as light as the ass of this truck has been since it rolled off the factory floor and headed for the upfitters. Also installed a rear view mirror. Being able to see directly behind me will be nice. I hope I'm not giving up too much traction. Big storm headed this way!

Another 4 hours of plowing the 4-6" we got overnight. Mostly uneventful until I was plowing back at the barn and a Ram5500 roll back truck with a Nissan Pathfinder on the back got stuck in the drive. First time I had to put it in low range but she pulled him right out. Should have good wrecker karma for a while now.

No sooner did I tear it apart than the weatherman said never mind the cold and clear here comes more snow. Now I need to hustle and get it back together.

Thanks guys! She is earning it this winter. I got oil pan and trans pan heaters that I need to install but I've been parking at the hanger which is a way better option. More snow tonight then dropping to minus a bunch tomorrow.

Plow truck is pressed into daily driver duty. Took the studs off and grabbed the 255's off the crew cab while my Tacoma is getting some PM done. I kind of like it.

I forgot you had this truck. How does the 292 do in the 1 ton? The 250 in my 67 is pretty slow...especially with the 3 on the tree, but I think its because it has the stock intake/header and a tiny 1 barrel carb

MTCK 05-23-2017 12:58 PM

Re: 1984 K30 Project Plow Truck

It's a real tire shredder. Haha kidding obviously. It's not fast but it pushes like a tractor. Gas mileage is some of the worst I've ever seen. Keep in mind I'm going backwards a lot but averaging 5-6 when plowing. I'll get a tank through it this week and see how that compares. Short version is it keeps up with traffic just fine.

Thanks guys. Haven't been on here for a bit, but have put a decent amount of miles on the K30 this summer. It's nice having the option to drive it with the summer tires. Last two tanks have averaged over 8mpg! Look out Prius crowd!

What does a Prius run on? Strawberry douche no actually I think they run on hippies.

End of an era - sold the airplane hanger where I used to squat with my plow truck in the winter and complete the occasional project. I had to go grab my lift gate. Dang thing is heavy. I've got the flatbed and lift posted for sale and hope to get a regular fleetside box on before the snow flies. I also have two new gas tanks sitting waiting to be installed. I can double my summer range from 160 to 320 if they both work!
