Need to take the car up to the race shop to remove the oval set up in it and have a roadrace/street set up put in before any more body fitting can continue......I was NOT going to take it up there looking like it was.....the things are just wiped down and painted, no primer so paint just flies off and theyve never even been driven in rain!.....so I put a wire wheel on my 10000 rpm mini grinder and had at it....prob got 30hrs into the whole thing.

the black rectangle thing is the rearend oil cooler.....air is brought in through a Naca duct in the rear quarter window and blows through...your seeing the air exit of the cooler.

There it is that famous Nascar "truckarm" rear suspension....some of you may not know this but it is patterned directly off a 64 - 72 chevy/GMC truck......and is still used today in Nascar Sprint Cup/Nationwide and Truck Series as well as ARCA and Hooters Cup.

Re: My '69 Chevelle/Winston cup car
[QUOTE=N2TRUX;4318504]I thought it looked familiar. I have been using the exact same thing on some of my suspension components and really like the color and low luster sheen.
Would that be two great minds thinking alike or two puds in a pod....;) Haha awesome!....Stacy David from GearZ has been preaching about Duplicolour products for years so when I went looking for a colour for the rear end I came back with about 3 different cans....tried them all on some scrap metal and that one got the nod.....I very happy with the way it turned out...D |
Re: My '69 Chevelle/Winston cup car
Nice progress!

Re: My '69 Chevelle/Winston cup car
Awesome project, love the mix of current race car technology with classic GM musclecar. Thanks for documenting your progress.

Re: My '69 Chevelle/Winston cup car
Got to sub to this one. I've always wanted an old school racer. I owned a 71SS for a SHORT time. If only we could keep our past cars....

Re: My '69 Chevelle/Winston cup car
Talked to the Race Shop about doing the front end of the car they said they are moving the shop to a new (nearby) building but wouldnt be able to get to the car until early Feb!...not good.
The guy who is going to do the mods to the roll cage ran a Late Model for years and he came over to look at the front end....made some measurements and came up with what I need for a road race type set up...just need to change the left side upper control arm....went up to the Race Shop and they had a couple real close to what I need.....Heres a pick of a bunch of uppers and lowers I had looking for one that would work.....there is about $400 in parts in the pics with most of it in the lowers....note the trick black "slugs" that allow you to move the arm fore and aft without buying a new arm http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...ck/ns004-1.jpg |

Re: My '69 Chevelle/Winston cup car
rolled it outside for some pics....be nice to have a little sunshine.....the car has the new 2 inch offset wheels on it now as opposed to the 3 inchers it had on it in the previous pics....gives the car a little more attitude....I love it

Re: My '69 Chevelle/Winston cup car
My god, this soooo cool. I am so glad i can see this go together, and that you are making resonable progress---unlike someone like me. Of course I have some side work going so i can play with my own stuff----one of these days.

Re: My '69 Chevelle/Winston cup car
Killer project. What a great way to get a unique street fighter. Do you mind if I ask what a cup car like that goes for?
Also - Is that your garage - or a buisness (exhaustville). Love the name and the sign! Have you been to GarageJournal.com? They'd love to see it! Enjoy the process - pretty soon it'll be done! |
Re: My '69 Chevelle/Winston cup car
Thanks again for all the kudos guys....Exhaustville is my garage not a business.....I had the shell built by a contractor friend of mine and I did all the wiring, gas, heating, insulation etc....it needed a name but I couldnt decide on anything, one night I was talking in my sleep (scary!) and my wife said I was talking about going out to "Exhaustville" to work on the truck....we all laughed about it then for my birthday I get this sign designed by my step son and built by my nephew who is a cabinet maker....I was floored to say the least
heres another pic http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...k/dec21020.jpg |
Re: My '69 Chevelle/Winston cup car
E-Tek As far as the car I paid $2500 US as a roller in the early pics in the thread (no engine, trans, gear) in 2008 when our dollar was junk and that doesnt include driving to Charlotte picking it up and driving home with it on the trailer (gone 3 days)...I found it on www.racingjunk.com in the "Asphalt oval racing" cars "Nascar/ARCA" section.
hey where are you? one of your fab classes would be great to take...D |
Re: My '69 Chevelle/Winston cup car
allways wanted a mid 80s Montecarlo or early 80s Thunderbird Nascar style race car
i like it good job |

Re: My '69 Chevelle/Winston cup car
I spoke to my friend in Virginia (David) who is helping me with the set up of the car..he said I will need a perfectly flat piece of floor to put any set ups in the car....at a race shop this would be done on a surface plate (mega$$) but he told me how to make one that will work for a guy like me....so thats what I did.
I bought a cheap laser level and leveled out a spot on my shop floor.....the left front (LF) was the highest spot so it needed nothing, the RF needed 3/8" and the two rears needed a full inch to be level.....I covered the plywood with a waterproofing stain I had lying around so it would be less likely to warp or swell if it got wet. http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...ewstuff028.jpg http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...wstuff007a.jpg |
Re: My '69 Chevelle/Winston cup car
so now to set ride (frame) heights blocks will be set under the frame (behind the front wheels and in front of the rears) and wheels adjusted with the jack bolts on the coil springs on all four wheels

Re: My '69 Chevelle/Winston cup car
so I took the whole thing apart and sent it to the media blasters....
http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...fc004Large.jpg |
Re: My '69 Chevelle/Winston cup car
while the car was away I stripped all the paint off the cage and primed it....
http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...rojectb008.jpg http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...rojectb009.jpg http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...rojectb019.jpg http://i962.photobucket.com/albums/a...rojectb025.jpg |
Re: My '69 Chevelle/Winston cup car
get the car back from the blasters.....worse than I had hoped but better than I was afraid....the roof and behind the bumper was trash.....so the body guy installed a new roof and shaved the drip rails ( an old Nascar areo trick)
