I bought them off of eBay the last couple of years. From a place at the International Border down in San Diego. The skinny set I bought two years ago and the wider set I bought last year. |

When I order my T-case I'll use my TH350/NP205 in the mean time.
I'm looking at the Atlas 4SP or the StaK 5.44. |

You mean 3 speed ;) ?! Why'd you pick StaK over Atlas? The only reason I'm thinking of getting a Stak is because Atlas is going through major changes in their gear-cutting. They're bringing it in-house and I'm concerned about QA since they're starting from scratch. |

Really   ?!! On their website they claim they can handle tons of torque. My rig will weigh approx. 5500LBS to 6000LBS easily (Fully loaded for a trail-run). And the Ram Jet will be doing 565FT/LBS of torque (At the crank)! This is a first for me: Atlas = Dana 300 based t-case. And StaK is all new engineering from the ground up? I'm eye-balling the StaK 5.44/3.05:1 model. BTW; Who's Vic ;) ?! |

When they released the Atlas, it was SWB only (Jeep, Bronco, Land Cruiser, etc). You can find pictures all over the place. It's one of the original marketing points for the NP205 derived Lomax by Novak. Stak is it's own design, not based off a production t-case. They were also first to market with a tough 3 speed t-case, they also have proto-type four speeds out... same case. |

Whoa   !! So you have one of the proto-types???!!!! What are the gear ratios :D ???!!!!! And when do they expect production to start on those???!!!! |

I went big block in my 68 GMC about 20 years ago.
Used a .060 454 4bolt block, steel crank, micro oval port heads hogged out to use 2.19in stainless valves, Performer cam and intake, HEI. Doug Thorley Tri-Y headers. Did not have any clearance issues as I moved it all forward 2.5 inches, used all factory 72 Big block pulleys and brackets, stock V8 crossmember and a V8 2WD fan shroud, |
Re: 67-72 BigBlock 4x4s! Pos pics info here.
I also have been thinking about putting a 502 in my 67/72 mix but my question is did any of you have to add a leaf in front to support the additional wheight? Or did you just leave them alone?

I am running Tuff Country's HD front springs that give you the extra leaf. Not sure if it was needed in reality - not like I'm gonna have a winch up there anytime soon.

Re: 67-72 BigBlock 4x4s! Pos pics info here.
so iam getting ready to install my 396 in my 4x4. and it looks like all the firewall bashing is around the clutch rod hole. iam using the stock cross member with poly mounts and would like to use the stock holes in the frame. will it fit?? i would like to see some other pics out there.
|
Re: 67-72 BigBlock 4x4s! Pos pics info here.
Hate to tell you this, but you just won't know until you put it in place. Some need no modifications to put in the stock sbc location, some do. I had interference on both sides using the stock sbc crossmember, new rubber motor mounts and the stock sbc engine location.

Re: 67-72 BigBlock 4x4s! Pos pics info here.
Would a body lift kit help clearance issues?
|
Re: 67-72 BigBlock 4x4s! Pos pics info here.
A firend of mine works on Fords and runs into the same problem about engine placement. Just because the trucks are from the same plant doesn't mean everything fits the same. I have two 4x4's with 454's in them. The 1968 I moved the engine Forward aprox. 2" and put 2wd Jethot headers. Small moons had to be made in frame for a good factory look. The 1970 was not moved forward. It has low cut valve covers and the drive side is still tight.
The exhaust manifold is still stock. Both trucks are long wheel base which helps with the extra weight up front, not so much kick. I had to put bigger lug bolts on because of the added weight. Both trucks are 1/2 tons with power steering. The 68 has disc front and rear and the 70 has disc front. |
Re: 67-72 BigBlock 4x4s! Pos pics info here.
Usually a body lift helps with HEI clearance and also with the valve cover clearance - but - I used a body lift and still had clearance issue at the valve covers. Again, you just really won't know until you slide it into place.

Re: 67-72 BigBlock 4x4s! Pos pics info here.
iam getting ready to put my 396 together and was wondering what oil pan works with the stock cross member. i heard that the one with the hump in the middle hits. thats the one i have now.
|
Re: 67-72 BigBlock 4x4s! Pos pics info here.
My 454 came from a 1989 2wd 1 ton - using the stock 1969 sbc engine crossmember the oil pan was extremely close to the crossmember. I ended up cutting the crossmember and adding some material to gain some clearance. Hope that helps a little.

Re: 67-72 BigBlock 4x4s! Pos pics info here.
i heard that a stock chevelle one works .

iam going to get a 30710 milodon pan
|
Re: 67-72 BigBlock 4x4s! Pos pics info here.
So you should be able to use the Milodon pan and original small block engine crossmember and have no problems? Cool ill keep that in mind for when it's time to do the conversion.
|
Re: 67-72 BigBlock 4x4s! Pos pics info here.
yea thats the same oil pan i use and im on all sbc mounts

Re: 67-72 BigBlock 4x4s! Pos pics info here.
sorry it took so long to respond, but the Headers are Hedman but I do not have a part number. They do clear the frame but not by much, can barely get my fingers between the frame rails and headers but they do not even rub under the twisting of the motor
The motor is sitting on stock big block mounts in the stock location hope this helps guys anything else just let me know, the motor is coming out in a couple weeks!!!! |
Re: 67-72 BigBlock 4x4s! Pos pics info here.
whats the best way to mount a bb in, I was going to order the DI4Yx crossmemeber or should I just look for a set of bb mounts for the sbc crossmember or replace the whole crossmember and where would I get those parts?
