Ok, here is mine. It is a 56 GMC with 502/350, Camaro clip, disc brakes in front. I was planning to take it apart for paint but I just got a great deal on another 56 I have to pick up in a week or two. That one has a 70 Camaro clip and KP four link. It also has a fleetside bed from a 58 I believe. It is in pieces and I will post photos when I get.

I have a question. I have a 59 pickup and i want to lower it, is there any other way than to buy a drop axle?

Yes, you can purchase monoleaf springs that will lower it.

Re: Calling all 55-59's

Oh ok is that cheaper than buying a drop axle for it?

northerngmc 02-23-2008 10:10 AM

Re: Calling all 55-59's

Well a drop axle is for the front and will therefore only drop the front.

Most people on here are upgrading the suspensions with Mustang II or Camaro or aftermarket stuff to to a total upgrade to power steering, disk brakes, independant front end.

Very few of these customs still have the straight axle, therefore very few use drop axles.

If you want to drop the truck and keep the original axle, steering, and brakes then I would suggest replacing the springs at all four corners. Originally they had leaf springs on all four corners and you can replace the springs with springs that give the truck a lower ride. One such springs are Monoleafs
http://www.eatonsprings.com/Monoleaf.jpg
and are called that because you replace the multispring pack with a single thicker spring.

Also looking at vendors such as Classic Performance Parts http://www.classicperform.com/ or Early Classic Enterprises http://www.earlyclassic.com/ Both have reasonable web pages and I think you will find different solutions

Re: Calling all 55-59's

for the rear you can flip the spring. put the axle on top of it, instead of below the spring. it will drop it A LOT though.

how low do you want it?

Here is an old picture of our 58 GMC project. Still looks about the same. Once we get moved back home this summer, she'll be torn down fully to the chassis

The front clip is from a 79 NOve, along with the inline 6, tranny and rear end. We're keeping the front clip but scrapping he power train. We have a bored out 283 to drop in after the front clip is welded in properly. Then come airbags in the front shackle flip in the rear with a c notch and TONS of bodywork......eeeekk now i'm dreading starting in on it again :D

Got to be the lighting... it's actually orange. The same color as those newer VW Beetles. I used a light gray sealer under it to make it pop more.

My favorite of all time is the 59 Custom Cab fleetside. I have three of these in the build line for my keepers. Here is a picture of my first one I found in Kansas which was the nicest original loaded 283 big window with 72k original miles that I owned for 10 years and sold for some reason for $6500 back in 2002. If you look at Barrett Jackson sale back in January 2008 it just sold for $58,000 after some new paint and seat fabric.

Thank you very much! I don't get very many compliments on it in the state that it's been in since I got it. It's the only thing that I seem to always hang on to.

TOM,

I checked out your truck and I'm really impressed.

Could you expand on the bear claw latch project?

How do you lock the doors now?

What type of inner door handle assembly is used?

Thanks
