Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
GMC painted wheels differently during these years. If the body was dark green the wheels were painted light green from the factory.

Can't wait to get the roof completed and a little more metal work ( minor rust repair) on the front fenders completed. Being an Arizona truck it is pretty clean and rust free.

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
Sweet Burban....So neat that pops bought it new when you were born....
I would go original for sure.... |
Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
I did my windows last winter, in a 64. When you go to cut the rubber out be SURE and wear some saftey glasses. 40 years of AZ sun made those gaskets like plastic spears!!!!! I replaced my sliders w/ solid glass, but be ready for sticker shock on those gaskets, 40-50 bones a piece. Fixed glass were 30 bucks a piece. The slider gaskets are 2 thicknesses are the perimeter to make up for the window offset. You will understand when you take out the window and can see whats going on. Sometimes the channels rot out where junk gets caught; dont be surprised.
Cool project and good pics.....lets hope it cools down soon!!! |
Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
My 20 year son was over for lunch today and stating how the "jimmy" was really his :blah: and as soon as it was done he would be driving it :bs:
Of course my response went something like this :haha: It will be his, someday as the only grandson of the original owner it will be passed down. Once we get him passed the choppin',lowerin', 47 speaker blastin stage. This puppy stays original ! |

Well..it's been a while since any real work has been completed on the beast. Spent a little time on it over the weekend and got some new primer on it. Located a new windshield and some of the side window rubber.
It's slow and money is tight. Trying to keep it going in the forward direction. |
Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
Glad to see your back! I feel ya having to work on it without a garage....

Well time for an update. The Burb has been sitting. With our local economy in the total dump, money is beyond tight. Unfotunately I have to move the burb to another location. The work that was completed 6-8 months ago went south.
Before we were able to seal the primer, enough moisture got under the primer to rust and blister the primer. So, time to take back down to metal. New type of primer and paint is going on Monday. Picked up the new windshield today and the gasket should be in next week. Gotta order the side gaskets that are $$$$. The main thing is some new side glass. Does anybody know if the original was laminated or tempered. The existing appears to be a mixture of both. Also, anybody have a good ( cheap) place to get the glass or should I just have it cut and made to match ? |
Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
I believe the original was tempered. My truck had both and I found shards i n the truck indicating that one or more windows had been broken and replaced with lam. I replaced with lam and cracked one piece putting the interior trim back in. Take the extra time and get the tempered; it will have to be sent for the process.

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
where can we get new windshields for the 60-63's?
|
Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

If you have an Ever- Ready Glass in your area you could check with them. I found both laminated and tempered side glass in mine also. I know that with three boys growing up we broke our share of windows in that beast. Just don't know which ones. were the replacements. |
Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

They have a lot of parts for the '60-'66 Chevy/GMC trucks, Carryalls and Panels. Try your local automotive glass shop. I found one here in Kansas City, that will work on the old stuff and has furnished and installed three 4-5-6 windshields for me for a little over $200.00 each. I had to provide the grommet, but that is a lot cheaper than the price of the glass from the local aftermarket truck parts suppliers...they also warranty the glass and installation. |
Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
thanks guys! love this web site....
|
Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
For what it's worth - I read a while back the laminated glass originally came in the trucks with metal frames around the door glass, and the tempered door glass came in later trucks after they dropped the metal frames.

Hi guys..does anybody know about the headliner in my 60? It is a hard cardboard like material that fits between the exposed ribs. Wondering where to get it or what it would be called to search for it.
Thanks Bill |

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
KIC,
In your memorabilia, you have the OEM owners manual, (Comic book) DON'T EVER Sell that, talk about rare. Geez, I lost my Original one in Katrina and had to have a color copy made from Arthur Throckmorton in NV. I've collected a about 90% of all the stuff on the GMC trucks. Do you have or are you keeping the V-6? Jake |
Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

Good to know about the OEM manual. Don't plan to get rid of any of the books/paperwork as it is original to this truck. I do have the V-6 and keeping it all original. Gas hog it is, but bullet proof. Sorry about your loss in Katrina. That really sucks. |

Hey all,
I posted this in a separate thread, but thought I would throw it out here too As my Burb slowly comes together and is so close to coming to color, I need a little info on the dash board color. The dash top is a dark greyish black. Does anybody know a good paint color (stock) number ? My Burbs ready for paint and we will be pulling the windshield when we paint, then installing the new windshield. While the glass is out, I want to paint the dash top. Also, any info on replacement of the inside exposed insulation for the roof. Would like to keep it all as close to original as ca$h allows. Thanks for any info you might have. Bill |

KIC,
According to the information I have on the CD ROM from the 60-66 GMC Club. There are two different colors and I'm not sure which is correct. However, these are dupont formulars and I don't believe they will match new codes, so I think we bnoth have to match with our eyes. Cab Interior Silver Grey #94162 Silver Fawn #17552 Cab Dash & Floor Charcoal Grey #76603 Charcoal Fawn (Non-Gloss) #95505 I know the dash was a flat dark grey (charcoal) See attached pic of arthurs truck interior which is 100% correct. |
Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
Does anybody know if the 1960 Suburban had two different silverish gray colors in the interior ? Like one color for the dash face and a few other trim areas, and a different color for the interior side panels?

A few hoods are still around. I have seen them in junk yards. So many of them were replaced to make the older ones look new that they are few and far between. I love the eyebrow hood too. (Remember: Look...no touchy ! ) lol:metal: |

Got to work on the Burb over the weekend. Getting so close to paint. It has taken so , so long. But since the work is being done outside and is at another location, timing is everything and lack of money is everything else. A couple of friends helped out and we got a lot done. Also working on the interior parts.
My Brother-in-law is staying with us for a short while and loves to work on the GMC so I brought all the interior parts home and he has been sanding and cleaning so most are ready for primer and paint. Hope to paint this beast in the next month. ( But I have been saying that for a year....) |

The work is continuing at a rapid pace. Painted the inner fenders, the front behind the grill painted the dashboard primered, the inside hood has been painted and clear coated, the interior parts were primered and more. Hope to paint the roof tomorrow. Also, been polishing the front grill. there is a picture of one of the light rings before polished and the one that hasn't been done yet. :smoke:

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban

DUDE...I can't believe you are making me do this on this forum. :smoke: I APOLIGIZE to all in advance that I have to use the following 4-letter word in such a loving and family oriented forum thread. :waah: It is a F.....F......FO.....Fo...Ford.( ugh... there I said it) .. F@&d product called Automotive Bright Metal Cleaner 8A-19522. The can I have is literally 30 years old, I got it in a bulk purchase from a closing gas station. But, it seems that they still sell it. Also, I have heard that once you remove the rust you should then apply then apply (F@&D) Super Seal Anti-Corrosion compound (F3AZ-19515-SA) to prevent it from rusting further. |

Well it has finally happened ! :metal: the paint has started ! This is the first under coat of white. A light sanding then the 2nd coat will go on and then the gloss coat. Then the sides can be final sanded for paint. The roof of these monsters is a real job to fine sand without leaning on, and denting in the roof.
My brother-in-law did a great job of block sanding the roof. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks this puppy will be done enough to come home. |
Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
Looks KILLER, Before you put your cowl vent back on, fix a piece of heavy plastic or metal screen to the underside. This will keep debris from filling your vent plentum or let moisture built up with the debris.
