I feel for you with the painter delay - that can sure test a guy's patience!

Re: Project: 1972 502 HO 4x4 Suburban
Do you leave those vertical bands on the new radiator? I have a similar radiator is why I ask.

I cut them off. I'm fairly certain you're supposed to. On some of my pics if you see a line there its because they (radiator supplier) painted it with the straps on. My Body Man tells me both driver and passenger rockers/floors are cut and welded in. I gotta get down there and get some new pics. With any luck he may be blocking and sanding,..maybe even spraying a little blue on the interior (ya, right!?). We'll see. |

I got the hubcaps restored at Hubcaps.com. $65 each. I'm very happy with the results. What do you guys think?

Re: Project: 1972 502 HO 4x4 Suburban

SOmeone else had a set of those polished at a metal shop and they looked chrome.. |
Re: Project: 1972 502 HO 4x4 Suburban
Holy sickness!! You are building my Burb, well like mine, but I opted to stick w/the 2wd chasis. I put my rear axle under the trailing arms and I am going to use a DIY4x set up for the front leaves (will eventually do a coil sprung front as well to match the coil sprung rear w/trailing arms!) Other than that I am leaning towards a BBC 496-505 but the old school way, stoked and poked! Sweet build and man did you start with a sweet Burb!
We need more picts!! |
Re: Project: 1972 502 HO 4x4 Suburban
nice burb build!
i would like to build one someday. |
Re: Project: 1972 502 HO 4x4 Suburban

Working on getting the 3 rows of seats done now. Had all the frames sandblasted and powdercoated. Then I bought some 1/8" masonite from Home Depot and used the old cardboard seat backing for a pattern to trace onto the masonite. I then used some tie-wire to attach the masonite. Turned out great.
I went ahead and had the front seat covered. I'm very happy with the upholstery guy that was recommended to me so I think I'll drop off the back seats soon. |

Well,....I'm still trying to keep this project going. I got the 2 rear seats re-done. Decided to go non-factory matching with the black armrests (with the parchment seat covers). Wasn't real happy with how the white, off-white, parchment, etc. colors were matching up between the seat covers, door panels, and seat belts, vinyl paints available, etc. Too may shades of white. Going to finish off the interior with black carpet, black seat belts, and off white door panels and headliner,....hope it all work out and looks decent.

My painter finally got off his a$$ and shot a few coats on the inside. Looks pretty good, a little touch up is needed on the wheel wells and kick panels. Going to have him roll-on the paint over the plywood to get good coverage. With any luck he is bolting and lining up the front end soon and gets this thing done in the next several months.

Re: Project: 1972 502 HO 4x4 Suburban
nice build.....love 4x4 Sub's

Re: Project: 1972 502 HO 4x4 Suburban
how do you shift it into 4x4? I don't see the hole for the transfer case shifter in your high hump. Trevor
|
Re: Project: 1972 502 HO 4x4 Suburban
Haven't cut the hole yet in the high hump. Since I moved the motor and trans around I wanna get this thing home and do some measuring before I cut it.
|
Re: Project: 1972 502 HO 4x4 Suburban
That's what I thought you were probably doing. The color should pop the burb. Congrats on one step further. Trevor

Barn door conversion now in the works...........
Notice I (my body man) changed the bottom door sill to the correct barn door type. |
Re: Project: 1972 502 HO 4x4 Suburban
Very nice burban build! I love it. I bet you can't wait for the day you can atleast fire that bad boy up! Good luck getting it out of paint prison man! On edit, I was wondering where you got the out put shaft flange for the NP205?
|
Re: Project: 1972 502 HO 4x4 Suburban

If I remember correctly I purchased the 205 flange from Tom Woods Custom Driveshaft. You can google and find them. It was while ago when I got it. I think a lot of other places sell 'em now. |
Re: Project: 1972 502 HO 4x4 Suburban
Thanks! I'm going to try and find one for my Longhorn so I can go with the 1410 or 1430 style U-joints. The puny stockers aren't going to last to long.
|
Re: Project: 1972 502 HO 4x4 Suburban
I love the build as welll and i was supprised how much the frame and rear crossmember looked just like my 3/4T 4X4 at the tank location, Untill i reread the thread and realised it was a truck frame LOL! It looks aside from the filler location i could have had a 37 gallon tank too. I just got my 18G tank mounted..
Looking at your build left me wondering how your going to route the filler to the tank as it looks like it may be in the fenderwell area? I think the stock tank filler was rearward if i'm not mistaken. is the tank filler in the same location as stock? Just a little curious cause if my 18G tank starts to tell me to run to the gas station too often i'll be wanting a bigger tank.. :o |

Went by the body shop this morning, and getting ohhh so close. Pretty much down to touching up the nicks around the doors and hood. Outer grill is on permanently now and lined up decent. Glass installer should be by this week to get the fixed pieces in. Hope to have it back in my garage in a couple weeks (man I've been thinking and saying that for quite a while now!).

Re: Project: 1972 502 HO 4x4 Suburban
Very nice!
I think you and I will probably be at a show together showing our burbs in no time at all! Do you think you will be driving it by the time the 2011 Brothers truck show comes around? |
Re: Project: 1972 502 HO 4x4 Suburban

Thanks. Ya I hope to be at Brothers this summer (early August?). I'm very optimistic I'll be driving it by then. Maybe not 100% complete (are we ever?), .....but 85% or 90% hopefully. By the way, your burb is mighty clean too! |

Well, believe it or not I got the Burb back from the body shop in back March(1st pic). I've been slowly putting it back together. It's finally 90% road worthy and legal. Here it is at the Pep Boys parking lot. I'm going to have to back track a bit and document (pics) all the stuff I've done and got into this baby. Stay tuned.

Re: Project: 1972 502 HO 4x4 Suburban
Beautiful! it's coming along very nicely.
