Thanks. I glade I decided to do it this way. It's the strongest part of the frame.

Hesperia is off the 15 fwy just north of San Bernardino. Were at 3,400 foot level.

I don't care about the leafs that much. I like the way the frame rails look. There better to fab a notch. But for now I might leave the leafs. Also the 73 is a 1/2 ton with a 5 lug 12 bolt posi. One more reason is I'm using the 73 short step side bed.

Anybody want to buy the Dana that came out of the 65 8 lug 3/4 ton?

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

Here's the latest. I finished welding up the rest of the frame after lifting it up on the lift (note: I LOVE THAT LIFT) Then cutting the back of the cab so it will fit level with the frame.
This is what the cab looked like before I cut it.

This is after

http://belair.smugmug.com/photos/476448380_JcjTE-XL.jpg

Now it sits level. I'll mount the 65 side cab mounts so I can keep the cab nice and low.

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

Next I swapped the 73 front 1/2 ton cross member with the suspension. Witch included the 2 1/2" dropped spindles, and disc brakes.

http://belair.smugmug.com/photos/476448524_eq7SR-L.jpg

While the cross member was off I cleaned up & painted the frame, and cross member where it bolted on the frame,

It's NOW officially a 1965 C-10 Short Bed. Even though it's half a 73

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

I cleaned up the Cragar SS wheels that came with the 73. They look pretty good. Now I need to find one 15x8 with a 4 1/2" back spacing, Or maybe I have to find 2.
This is the 16X8 in the rear.

This is the only good 15" one in the front

They look really good. Better than I expected.:metal:

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

Thanks you guys.
Next I will finish mounting the cab, and put the 73 bed on. Before I mount the cab I have to weld up the part that I cut, and also I had to slice the floor under the seat because the frame was hitting the bottom of the floor. I'll make 2 small tunnels to clear the frame.

STAY TUNED

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

Thanks again everybody.

I didn't work on it at all today. :(

I think next I should mount the cab to the frame. I thought of cutting off the front cab mounts from the bent 73 frame and weld them on the side of the frame for the rear cab mounts.

Keep checking in.

I just finished the modifying back of the cab. I made 2 tunnels to cover the frame where I dropped the cab down. Then I welded up the back of the cab where I notched it.

OK back to work. Didn't do much today. On MY truck that is. All I did was put some seam sealer on the welds, and primmer it.

Actually I finished rebuilding the right side suspension on that Stude I'm also working on. I replaced the A Arm bushings, replaced the needle bearings in the King pins. Cleaned & sand blasted the left side suspension parts, and painted them. This one pays my bills. ;)
I'm doing the left side today.

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

I rolled out the shortened frame with the cab on it so I could trial fit the bed & front end sheet metal. All I did was hang it on. Then I rolled in back in the shop & on the lift so I could make it all fit better, and make sure it all lined up. Like wheels where they belong i the middle of the wheel wells, also the cab to fender fit, and the 73 bed fitting with the 65 cab.

http://belair.smugmug.com/photos/482556297_Tjv9y-M.jpg
I almost forgot. I found (2) 7X15 Cragar wheels in really good condition for $150.00. I had some used tires that I installed on them. LOOKS REALLY GOOD. :metal:

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

Here's how it looks now with it shimmed up, aligned & bolted up. I wish I could roll it outside again for a better picture, but the friends are gone now. It's still just temporary. I had to do it so I could sleep at night. I was worried if I measured correctly. AND I DID!!!:metal: Now all the body lines line up, and everything fits perfect. I had some friends over to help lift it all on. That's why I did it now and not later, but I'm glad I did. Like I said, now I can sleep good knowing that there wouldn't be any problems with the fit. I love the way the 73 Bed looks with the 65 Cab. So far I'm real happy with the way it's coming out.

Thanks Allan. It's all coming apart again to do more frame clean up, fire wall holes, install power steering box, and column. Not to mention the engine & trans.

It's time to watch TV now. It's only 8:15 PM here. I'm not that old yet.

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

I went to Pick A Part today and got a seat from a 91 Chevy truck, and a gas tank from a 77 Blazer. What a ***** it was getting the gas tank out. Everything was rusted, and no air tools. It took me 3 hours to get just the tank out. The seat fits with out any modification. It sits flat on the floor, and looks just about the right height. A lot of work but worth the $50.00 for the seat & $80.00 for the rest. Another score!! :metal:

http://belair.smugmug.com/photos/485912297_edAsJ-M.jpg

The tank has a hole in it. That's how a Junk Yard empty the gas tanks. No biggy, I'll just weld it up. I got the tank with the sender/pump, and the rock shield too.

how are you going to clear the tank of fumes before you weld it?

YES do be very careful welding on that gas tank! Even if it doesn't smell that bad the fumes can still ignite. If you need some ideas just ask. ;)

Re: 1965/73 Cheap Build Up

There was a guy at the shop my dad worked at years ago. He had a gas tank that needed to be welded. He set it on top of a 2 inch steel bench, crawled under the bench, lit the torch, and waived it in front of the fill neck.

When the tank fell from the ceiling back onto the bench he had no fumes left in it.

You can inert the tank by filling it with CO2 or Argon gas. That should flush all the gas fumes out, but still be careful.
