Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

I stumbled across it purely by accident. I have no problem cutting the bezel that's in there for the stereo, but REALLY didn't want to cut the NOS one.

I can't wait to get everything together and installed. I also wish I would have kept the supercharger off of my 2003. That would have been really cool under the hood.

I thought I would go ahead and start a project thread for this truck. Not much will be happening at first, but I will be doing little things here and there.

First thing this morning, I pulled off the bed rails and the push pads. Sorry you purists, I'm not a fan of those!

I went over the top of the cab and the hood with some polishing compound and the buffer too before I left for work. I think everything will buff out real nice and be nice and shiny for now.

Short term plans are:

* Finish waxing it. **DONE**

* Lower the front and rear a little, maybe two inches all around. The front sits a little higher than the rear right now, by about 3/4". So I'll try to get the front down just a touch lower than the rear. **DONE**

* O2 sensor. I need to add a heated O2 sensor. **DONE**

* Stereo! I must have my tunes! I have my trusty Alpine deck, Rockford Fosgate amp, RF component speakers, and RF 12" sub. I have the faceplate for the deck, now I just need to get a different box for the sub.

* Windshield. This one has some chips and a good munch on the lower left side.

* Power steering gear. Wynne said this one leaks, so I pulled the one off the 91 Suburban to swap out.

* Rebuild the door hinges. The drivers door shuts hard, the passenger is a little easier. Wynne included rebuild kits for those. :metal:

* Sport bumper for the rear.

* Rear tires. Drivers side is about gone, and the passenger will be great as a spare.

* Replace the seat cover. **DONE**

* Exhaust. The exhaust dumps on the back side of the rear end right now. I'm going to run it from there straight out the back with a pair of 3.5" x 18" tips. It sounds good as-is, but I really like those big tips! :metal:

That's mostly all for now. Later on I'll do the Suburban grill swap, fix the rust, swap in a TH700R4/3.42 combo, redo the interior, then paint it and replace all the moulding and trim with new stuff.

Awesome fine!!! I have a 84 GMC. If you chang the rear bumper, I'd liked to buy your old one. It looks to be in better than mine.

Holy cow. They are here in town with me, and I didn't realize they had that. I need that for mine. Great find Bob. Your winter plan sounds like a great one! Can't wait to see what you do with it.

Well get yer butt on over there and get one! I never even looked to see where they were, that's pretty cool! I am going to order one today.

Ol' Fred seems to be digging up all kinds of good new stuff! :metal:

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

Love the progress reports Bob. Your moving forward at a rapid pace. As a suggestion on the motor, if you can get a 6.0 go for it. Nothing wrong with a 5.3 but 6.0's are much more solid.
Besides, with a few bolt on you can have 500hp AND 20mpg.

glock35ipsc 07-09-2009 10:01 PM

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

Is 20 mpg really possible with the 6.0? My only experience with the 6.0 was in my 02 GMC 1500HD, and it got 14 on a good day. I would love the power of the 6.0 in a truck like this, but the mileage experience I had with mine had automatically ruled it out.

JohnC 07-10-2009 07:55 AM

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

Yeah my 03 1500HD is like you said 14mpg at it's best. However the 85 will be ALOT lighter, just don't know if it would equate to 20mpg. If Ken said so though I would believe him! :)

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

True, between the weight of the truck and the weight/friction loss of the 4wd components, it may be possible. I just have it stuck in my head since owning that truck that 6.0L = 14 mpg.

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

I'm with ya. I made a trip to Dallas and back one day, and I got 14.5mpg, and I was ecstatic!

just got back a few hours ago on a 500 mile round trip to the coast in the goat (6.0 w/ full bolt ons) and averaged 18.6 mpg. not bad considering how i was driving!;)

Drive it like ya stole it!

Got another major improvement partially done tonight. Got the Alpine installed. :metal: Oh, the chips in the paint to the right of the radio were already there! :ito:

I need to get a different sub as my Rockford Fosgate 12" is WAAAAAYYY too deep to fit behind the seat...... or under it, or even on it! So I'll probably look for some shallow 10's and a box, or build one. And I don't have the amp or the component speakers installed yet. But at least now I can play CD's!

Did a couple more things today, nothing big. The burb had one of those under hood trouble lights/reel lights, and I have been wanting to put it on the truck. So my son pulled it and the wire harness off and I got it put on the truck.

I also painted the back frame of the wing windows. The passenger side was rusty, and the drivers side wasn't far behind it. So I scuffed them both, masked them off, and sprayed them with some semi-flat black.

The kids and I took a road trip to Denver today to board member Lemield's house to pick up this gem (thanks Larry!!). It's a door jack/stand. It is going to be worth it's weight in gold when I go to rebuild the door hinges. And while it's here, I'm going to rebuild the hinges on Goldie, my Dad's 69 C20, and my brother's 80 snow plow truck.

The door edge sits in the groove on top of the jack. Then there is an attachment and extensions to allow one piece to attach to the latch just like the Nader pin does. Another hooks over the top of the door on the outside (with the window down) to hold everything steady. It looks like fun, and I can"t wait to use it. :D

Also, I finally ran a full tank of fuel through Fred. Even with the A/C on most of the time and a high speed interstate run last night, this tank averaged 14.4 mpg. Not too bad!

A lot of companies now make the swap almost a plug and play deal. The market is getting better and better for these swaps.

That's because I can see light at the end of the tunnel with this one! With the 68, there was no light, because the tunnel had no exit! :haha: I hit a wall with the 68 and couldn't go anywhere, and hadn't done much of anything significant, except to build the dash, in at least 3 years. At least with Fred, I can drive him to work, go home and do something to him, then drive him to work again the next day. As long as I can keep doing that, I think Fred will progress quickly. The exception being of course doing the Vortec swap this winter, then painting the exterior next winter.

Speaking of the Vortec, I transferred 1/2 of the $$ needed for the engine to my truck account today, and the rest will be transferred on July 31. Then on August 3, I pick up the phone and call whoever decides they want my business the most (Certified Auto Recycling or LKQ) and get a complete 5.3L heading my way! :metal: :metal: :metal: :metal:

Oh, you know how I like pictures! http://www.the-gallaghers.com/graphi...a_Emoticon.gif

Bryce was a bit bummed when I told him I needed the engine stand that the 350 he has been tinkering with is on, but once he understood that a Vortec would be hanging on it AND he would be helping me tear it down to clean up and paint, he decided that it was OK then. :D

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

Just a quick update -

I got the driver door hinges rebuilt the other night. It still doesn't shut well at all, but at least they have no play now. I have a door alignment tool on the way. I should have that Wednesday, then maybe I can get it all lined up and shutting correctly.

Tonight I installed the drivers wing window and the door glass seal off the Suburban. Now, with those two things in, along with adjusting the Nader pin a few days ago to help pull the door tighter in to the cab, there is hardly any wind noise now. :metal: I still need either an inside rattle strip for both doors, or just break down and buy a new set.

I'm taking another trip to Denver this Sunday, and my wife and I are taking Fred to Steamboat Springs in a couple weeks, so at least now the highway speeds will be much quieter!

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

OH, SCORE!!!!!! I was looking over the Burb making a list of stuff I want to pull and noticed the Nader pins seemed fatter than what was on the truck. Looked at the truck and the pin for the drivers door is missing a plastic sleeve around it. NO WONDER there was a metal-to-metal sound when slamming the door. :banghead:

So I pulled the left rear pin off the burb, it looked almost new, and stuck it on the truck. OMG, that door closes sooooooo much nicer!!!! It's still a little off, so the door alignment tool will still come in handy. But holy cow!!! I don't have to slam the crap out of it now.

That and the 4L80e and 14 bolt rear axle that came in a 1500HD both take a lot of power to turn. I'd run a built 4L60e or 4L65e. They're not as bullit proof but built right they can be strong. Something to consider.

Congrats on the progress, it's going to be a nice truck.

LOL, I hear ya! I've always been a blue guy and had grand ideas of changing this one too. Once I got it in my head EXACTLY what I would need to do, the red started growing on me! Actually, now I can't wait until it's gets repainted in red.

No lie! That door had me frustrated after rebuilding the hinges, but changing that pin made a huge difference. I'll tweak the thing once I get that alignment toll next week. Should be like butter then.

Thanks! The engine will be basically stock.... for now, but the tranny I am getting is their 4L60E "performance" build. Future plans for the engine call for a cam and head swap, an LS-1 intake/injectors/fuel rail, and a mild stall converter to match the cam. I'll probably change all the front accessory brackets out then too, out of necessity. As I understand it, the LS-1 intake puts the throttle body too low to clear the trucks tall-sitting accessories.

It is from Eastwood, but I got it from their eBay store. It was a little cheaper there at $27.

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

This morning, my son and I went to the shop and tinkered for a bit.

I got the rear end pulled out of the burb. This rear has 3.42's and will work beautifully with the 5.3/4L60E combo. I need to get axle seals and bearings, and a pan gasket. Then when the time comes, I'll swap the backing plates off of Fred onto this rearend.

Also got both rear wheel well lower rear pieces of sheet metal cut out. This body is very solid, so these saved my about $80 in patch panels. I'll weld these in this winter while the bed is off doing the engine swap.

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

Just fueled up both tanks. Got 14.7 mpg on the tank that was used to go to Denver and back. Not bad considering about 140 of the 177 miles on that tank were above 75 mph.

The other tank is just back and forth to work (almost 40 miles round trip) and running around town. That tank yielded 15.65 mpg!! :metal:

I plan on taking the top of the fuel pressure regulator off soon and do the quarter trick; that is, putting a quarter or similar sized washer under the FPR spring. That is usually good for a .5 to 1.0 psi increase.
