Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
Oh man nice ride! Our 02 Burby is nice, but that is the cat's @**! Good luck on your build, and nice Silverado you had. Details on the kit for the SFA would be cool, or did you built that?

I need to remove all pictures of that truck... I really really really really miss that truck!!!!! That, or I need to get the Burb done FAST |
Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
Well most of us probably enjoy the pics and would like more, so you better just get the burb done to enjoy a tuff 4x4 again.

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
Well it has been a while since I have had any time to work on my truck, especially with the Yukon down. I did get back to California for my Sister-in-law's wedding. My wife took pictures of family... I took pictures of my brothers 70 Chevy and 68 parts truck... After this weekend I should be back in the garrage for a few days, I have some work to get done on the Burb!!!!

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
for those who thought I may be cutting up a cherry Suburban...

I started by checking the cancer on the drivers side floor. I knocked several holes through the metal with my wire wheel. On the passenger side there is a screwed-down patch that was hiding under caulk and insulation. So along with the 4th door the Burb is gonna get a whole new floor and rockers... Then my distraction woke up... http://lh5.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TJ...helper%203.jpg I am really procrastinating getting my welder working... I need to get the body braced before I cut anything out. |
Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
Nice progress and cool build!

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
I still think you have a lot less rust than me.

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
Ok, so I know this is probably no big deal to most, but I am real excited...
I HAVE POWER IN THE GARRAGE FOR THE WELDER!!!!!! That's right, one year after buying my welder I hooked it up! I can't believe this year has been so busy! I actually went to look at my burb the first time with the welder in the back of the Yukon! http://lh5.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TM...0/DSCN0987.JPG I grabbed a few pieces of scrap to run a few beads on to test it out. I was too excited to clean off the work, so... http://lh6.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TM...0/DSCN0989.JPG I have a side project that is paying for the Yukon engine going on right now. This is a Dana 60 semi floater housing from an International truck. I am building it with 3.73, POWR-LOK limited slip and 35 spline axles. The axle shafts will be drilled for 5x5 studs and it will be set up for disc brakes. The WMS spread on this axle will be 62 3/8" without the discs installed. As you guessed, it is going under a 70 Chevy pick-up so it will get chevy trailing arm mounts. The truck is using a full length trac bar. Thought you guys would like to see it! http://lh6.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TM...0/DSCN0988.JPG Also, I pushed the third seat for the burb all the way back and its become my chill out spot... http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TM...0/DSCN0945.JPG |
Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
Oh good you have your helper ready too. You already started cutting, now you can start putting it back together.

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
very minor update. got the first donor door... I'm still looking for a donor right truck door to cut up. I want a right one for the contour. Truthfully though, I haven't been paid this month so I am broke and out of shielding gas. So I am waiting on that before I start welding anything back together.

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
Nice progress! Keep those pics coming. This is a very cool addition for these burbs.

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
Awesome project!

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
I snuck in a half hour of work while my daughter was napping. I wanted to get the holes to access the handle fasteners in before I had a chance to weld everything up. I am using a 72 door, and the holes are part of the door pull, so they are not flat like the right rear door.
http://lh6.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TO...0/DSCN0998.JPG I started out by cutting out the piece I wanted from what was left over from the donor door. I cut one of the bends, flattened out the piece, and cut the excess. http://lh5.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TO...0/DSCN1064.JPG So everything lines up nice... on the right door... http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TO...0/DSCN1065.JPG I messed up a little. The two "humps" were supposed to line up. I should have cut a dog-leg in the piece so it included the turn... It kicked my butt for about 2 hours untill I took the pictures and realized my mistake! I measured and measured and measured... I was starting to think my tape measure needed to be callibrated! I am just going to cut out the turn and add it in too. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TO...0/DSCN1066.JPG |
Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
I figured something was different on the 72 doors but now I know.
|
Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
you look like you are going to have a good helper there to one day as well hope the 4 door turns out good for you its looking good like your build i have to keep up with it looks like it will be a good one
|
Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
I haven't really had a chance to move forward on anything since I am still waiting on gas. However, I did get another rendering done. I plan on doing a few more for the nursery. It seems like a good place for them! This one is an important one since my wife owns a 48 Chevy pick-up and this will be her project.

Very cool!
|
Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
Score!
This is my Christmas present! This is also why my wife said I don't have to buy her anything for Christmas this year! Since the Dana 60 deal got put on hold, we picked up a spare 350 for the Yukon! My wife said that it had to be running before January. We are both VERY excited to have the Yukon back! Once the Yukon is on the road again I will have room to work on the burb. I am really motivated to get goin on the burb again! http://lh6.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TQ...0/DSCN1298.JPG |
Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
Looking good!

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
I am enjoying your build! You have a 3-4 year window of opportunity before the soccer games start eating into your guy time! Keep up the good work.

On a side note, I wanted to use the same seat I had in my 96 pick-up in the burb, but I found this on eB@y (sorry for stealing your picture). I am concerned about fit! Anyone seen a split bench out of a 95-99 GM truck in a 67-72? Notice this one is not centered either. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TS...-99%20seat.jpg A little bit of fun, here are some pictures one of the guys took of me at work last night http://lh6.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TS...104110347a.jpg http://lh5.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TS...0104110347.jpg Cell Phone pictures... I will have more on getting the Yukon out of the way, I am working on the engine today. |
Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
I see you work on big tonka toys. You have lots of mines in the Colorado Springs area.
I installed a seat out of a 2004 Silverado in my 67 Chev pickup. It's good on width, just a little thick for a standard cab truck, I'm 6'3" tall. But I'm going to use it in my suburban when it's ready, then I can move it back further. The only thing is they have integrated seat belts so you need to reinforce the floor so the bolts don't pull through. I welded 1/8" steel plate under the cab where I bolted the seats in. The cupholder in front just cleared my Hurst ratchet shifter. I have to take the shift knob off when the car seat is installed or I can't get it into drive. http://i763.photobucket.com/albums/x...man/67chev.jpg |

Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
Got some more help out in the garrage today!
Eldon Jeremy Born 1/17/11 0837 7lb 9oz 20" This is the reason I have been so frantic to get the Yukon going and progress on the Suburban underway! This weekend has been crazy! http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TT...0/DSCN1493.JPG I am moving all the updates for the Yukon to one of my old threads... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=386191 FRIDAY I lost the left front wheel bearings on the Suburban on the way home from work Friday morning, so I was out all 3 vehicles!! A buddy got out of bed to come get me and loan me his F250 for the week. Thanks Les! Since I didn't have the heads ready to go back on the Yukon, my wife made the executive decision to try another motor (this time one with a return policy) hence... SATURDAY http://lh4.ggpht.com/_Fx4nqL8K_5o/TT...0115111415.jpg Check out the Yukon thread for some interesting info on this engine My wife was having contractions while I was at the junk yard (don't worry, she told me they were not bad enough to go to the ER) I want to say thanks to the forum members (don't know their user names) who ran into me at the junk yard and offered to help pull the hood! That was very cool! You guys should have stuck around to watch me wheel that hoist with the engine all the way to the front! It was comical! I did the tough man all the way up there! the hardest part was getting it up that little ice ramp at the doors. SUNDAY worked on the Yukon all day... didnt want to go to far because of contractions... got pretty close to fire before going to the hospital |
Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
Congats on the addition to the family. You will need the suburban for sure now.
|
Re: 1970 GMC Suburban... for the family
Congratulations on the baby, and the engine. I'm not too far from you. we're expecting within the next few days to weeks as the doc said. Nice, pretty accurate right there.
