Re: Pics of a 47-54 crew cab???
We used a roller for the roof skin and then just butt welded it. It still needs alot of work with the drip rails. The wheels are 20x10.5 in the rear and 20x8.5 up front. When we stretched the frame they were diagnal cuts with diamond plates welded in and outside of the rails. I am going to have to completely rework the doors to get the upper body lines under the windows to line up. I ordered the hinges back in Feb and finially got them in the first part of April and have not had a chance to do any thing with them. Hopefully my grandparents place will sell and i can have the time and attention i need to focus on this project and get it done. Thank you for all of your interest and maybe i can get trucking on it again real soon. Until then i will keep collecting parts and be ready when the time is right. Thanks Again guys!!!!!!!

Re: Pics of a 47-54 crew cab???
I found this truck on Ebay for sale. Looks like they did a pretty good job except for the windows they used on the side for the extended part. They look like they came out of the s10 everything else came from, too new, they do not match.

Re: Pics of a 47-54 crew cab???
Wow I can,t believe my good luck! I am a new member and just logged on to introduce myself, and lo and behold , the latest post is about my next planned project. ........Stretched crew cab................
I am just finishing up a major re-do of a 1955 Chevy 2dr. post car and have a couple of A.D. trucks waiting to be transformed into a stretched crew cab. I may be a newby to this site ,but I have quite a few years of fabrication, welding ,painting, bodywork, upholstery etc. under my belt and do most everything myself. This is not to suggest however ,that I think I know it all!Far from it.... I look forward to participating in this forum and learning and sharing knowledge with it,s members. Just happy to be here:) |

Re: Pics of a 47-54 crew cab???
Hi solidaxel,, That is one really nice looking stretch you,ve got going there!
Proportionatley the stretch looks just about perfect. How much did you add to the length. Did you use extra doors to fill the gap or fabricate from sheet? Looking good! Post some more pic,s as you progress pls. |

Thanks, I think the additional length was determined by cutting the front (3 window) off as long as we could and the 5 window right behind the door and slipping them together and moving them out a bit at a time and standing back to take a look to see how it looked.
The vertical section is 18ga. for the filler we lapped the roof and floor, the roof to keep the crown, and the floor we used 1 1/2" angle for support. Now what do you do with the left over parts ????? |

Been laying low for a few monthes and finally have some thing to share with every one. If you remember my grand father passed and i had alot on my plate. Hopefully 2011 will be better then 2010. I had a great christmas and my loving wife bought me exactly what i wanted. She got me a motor and tranny for the crew cab project. It is a 82 model small block and has pretty low miles. I finally got good enough weather to take some time and get it cleaned up and dressed to impress!!! let me know what you guys think....

Re: Pics of a 47-54 crew cab???
G'day 806,
I just thought that I'd better let you know how much of an inspiration your crewcab has been for the start of my project and to say thankyou! It would be nice to see an update though. Have been checking in on this for some time now and are desperate to know how its coming along. Love the stance and the proportions look really sharp. |

Re: Pics of a 47-54 crew cab???
Progress?
Anyone out there have a crew cab 47-54 Chevy truck for sale? Anyone want to give me a bid on building one? I don't have the patience, time, or skills to build it but this is my dream vehicle! |
Re: Pics of a 47-54 crew cab???
I think he only gets to work on it on weekends so his progress is rather sporadic. But then I only get weekends to work on things and my project is 35 ft out the back door of the house.
I keep looking at the 51 1-1/2 ton cab and chassis I have sitting out in the driveway and that it sure would make good crew cab flatbed to tow with. One project at a time I keep telling myself. |

Re: Pics of a 47-54 crew cab???
SolidAxel,
Good looking truck, but I'm in need of a crew cab to haul my wife and kids in. I have two 3 window trucks that are nearly street ready, both are subframed 350/350 etc. I have been contemplating cutting them up and making one crew but I think they are too nice as-is to cut up for this. Plus, as mentioned above, I lack the skills and patience for such a feat. |
Re: Pics of a 47-54 crew cab???
Check back from time to time I will keep the progress of the truck updated on this site

Re: Pics of a 47-54 crew cab???
Anyone have a 47-53 Crew Cab, Quad Cab, 4-door Chevy truck for sale?
I am interested in the standard pickup cabs that have been converted to 4-door (like the green one posted in this thread or a COE like those two blue trucks in the earlier photos. eeosdad-truck at yahoo.com |

Re: Pics of a 47-54 crew cab???
For those that are doing the extended cab (I'm starting soon hopefully) the door skins have the same compound curves as the roof. That helps keep from having to flat of a roof with just putting sheet metal over it.
|
Re: Pics of a 47-54 crew cab???
When we cut our two cabs in half we cut the roofs on both trucks long from the vertical cut and then slipped them together until it looked "right" then cut the excess from the roof and butt welded the seam. I never thought about the door skins for a patch.
I did use a lot of door skin for other patches, "just the right thickness" |
Re: Pics of a 47-54 crew cab???
Yours sure turned out nice doing it that way.
Another thing I'm looking at is an extended cab as yours is but to widen the door so no blind spot in the corner. I think it's just a matter of giving the hinges more support for the extra weight. Suicide doors also. I'm just getting back into customizing now that the kids are gone. In the 60s and 70s I did a fair amount of 50s style work. Chopped a few tops, frenched headlights, etc. Not sure how far I'll go with this but the enthusiasm is back and running high now. |

Re: Pics of a 47-54 crew cab???
That looks like one of those cabs that the RR used to use for servicing track. It could go forwards or reverse and had wheels that rode on the tracks. You changed directions and just changed sides in the cab.

Re: Pics of a 47-54 crew cab???
In case I screw it up from before. I made a mistake by mentioning an item I had for sale. My mistake. Sorry, live and learn. Thanks for the info on the black 4x4 50 model crew cab. It gives my an idea how to go about such a project.

Re: Pics of a 47-54 crew cab???
They did actually make a 3door 3800 but there were only 1500 made. I still kick my self for it but I let one go I almost bought it for cheep too. There is little to no documentation on them because they were special order yo can find pics here and there of them but it is extremely rare.
