Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
got the electric fan setup done and it looks pretty fine.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_i...0/IMAG0256.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_i...0/IMAG0257.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_i...0/IMAG0258.jpg and finally, my engine gets up to operating temperature. It hadnt gotten above 150F for over a year now! main reason...damn Flexfan! took it off, replaced it with an electric fan and voila..engine heats up nice and quick and when the fan hits 200F, it cools down within 1 or 2 minutes to 185F. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_i...2/IMAG0265.jpg only thing left is to attach a LED parellel to the electric fan, so I can see on my dash if the fan is running or not...thanks for the tip Gchemist |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
removed the chrome pipes from my exhaust manifild that used to connect to the airpump.
finally I can see my valve covers :-) https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/_i...verwijdert.JPG |

Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
FINISHED!
for a first custom door panel, I think these came out pretty nice!! The tweeters are near the power windows knobs. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-1...2/IMAG0462.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-j...2/IMAG0460.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-y...2/IMAG0458.jpg |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
very nice job!!
What type of material are they made of? |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
Quote:
I used 12mm MDF, wooden rings, stretched t-shirt over it, epoxied it, then applied 200gr/m2 glasfibre and expoxied that again...used some body filler and then glued the lepardskin over it....came out pretty cool for my first custom door panel build. |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
Nice work!

Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
rollin on a new paint scheme...Black-White:
this what is should become (thanks to Motornut for photoshopping): https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-b...Y/P1140207.jpg and now for where I am am right now: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/--...2/DSC02114.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-x...0/DSC02106.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-F...0/DSC02113.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-i...0/DSC02115.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-_...0/DSC02122.JPG I thinned the Rust-Oleum about 20%. In the flat pieces it was fine. On the vertical parts it started running pretty fast. How can I fix that? less or more thinner? |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
Why arent you just spraying the truck?
|
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
Quote:
this can be done in front of my door. and spraying will mean missing our car for days. Its our daily, we drive about 10.000-15.000 miles a year with it. and budget. Rust-Oleum is twice the price over here from you guys, but still, this will cost me/us about € 200-250,- and I dont even want to know what spraying the car will cost...I am guessing in the € 2.000,-.................. |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
I meant like spray paint. You could do it for well under $100.
|
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
Quote:
well, spray cans are hideously expensive over here. They are about €15,- a piece... and if you mean spray gun and air compressor...well, dont have one and dont have a space to do it in... I thought I give this a try....dont need to be a show car..just a nice new coat of paint.. |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
looks good, thats gona help keep it cooler
a little red strip down one side and a blue on the other good place for a flag! less thinner is thicker i had a guy mention to look into a "Exterior High Gloss Enamel Laquer finnish" is there such a thing? i think that was the name "as a thinning agent",would help the shine? i duno |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
hi john,
about the hardener, this is were I read about it: http://rolledon.forummotion.com/t793...or-no-hardener |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
thats some cool tips
thanks gona look into that |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
looking at your truck again that white is covering very well
don't see pink or red coming threw lol |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado

I will probably do the last coat inside a garage of a friend of mine. the sun stays on our car until late in the afternoon, so I can prep the car during the day, but have to wait till like 19.00h before I can paint...hmmm... did you sand the paint between paint jobs? |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
sanded just the bugs
and a few rough spots but i painted during the day in the noon sun.....seemed better drying less bugs but i do remember having the contrasting image of my Canada car hood "burned" into my eyes for a while after |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
I did the hood today and front sidepanels.
I started with paint without thinner, but it resulted in orangepealskin immediately. went back inside and thinned by 10%. result was better but still you can see the orangepeelskin. So I get the best results when thinned about 20%, but then the paint start to run and produce drops very fast. anybody got some tips for me? John? https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-u...0/IMAG0581.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-w...0/IMAG0580.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-M...0/IMAG0579.jpg |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
i hate the runs,thats why i went 100% paint
I am going to try that 20% when i get two more coats and a bit of sanding and then i have 4 coats @100 % to sand from i was wondering do we loose shine with thinning? i can see how the red is coming threw a bit but it looks good |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
they say that thinning will loose some shine, but make the paint dry faster. Adding the hardener will give you the shiny finish...they say.
I enrolled in the Rolledon forum...gonna do some reading there! |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
did some more testing with the thinning. 75/25 mixture seems to give the best result. that is 25% thinner.
here are some pics. I think it will need at least two more coats...damn, this is a lot of work... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-t...288%252529.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-L...281%252529.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-L...281%252529.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-2...282%252529.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0...283%252529.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-x...284%252529.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-n...285%252529.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-9...286%252529.JPG https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-i...287%252529.JPG |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
Need pics without tape!!! :D
|
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
still peelin my tape off lol
sure is gettin white stopped at show sponser a body shop got talkin they asked where i painted my truck. said my laneway with a roller and brush look closer lol.... they heard of using fiberglass hardener, but were not sure if the mix would melt the paint if i went over mine now?? so i may try a sample out on the parts burb |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
@ titto: I am taking the tape of today, picture will follow. PEople warned me about the tape staying on too long leaving glue...dont want that. I'll just tape it up again tonight for the second coat of the day.
@ John: hahaha, thats a nice compliment. I might look into this harder too or just finish her up with clear coat finish. |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
I have put on the 3rd coat last evening/night.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-p..._3082122_o.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-2..._7817687_o.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-L...3_180164_o.jpg I checked this morning and it is still not covering all the red that is underneath. I also noiticed that the parts I finished last have dried up flat. I checked the temperature when I quit and it was around 60F. Not very warm, but within range. What causes this flatness? and can I buff it? or should I put one final coat over for the shine? |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
For me it was everywhere the dew would settle, may get my third today humid high of 40c

Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
But did your paint also get flat trom the dew?
Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
yes the next morning, dawn, i went out saw dew, didn't think anything, came out later realized it was flat there,
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=421767 post 86 the hood may look shadows but it's flat ..... and along the body line from handle back to the light drivers side |
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
man I hate it when that happens...
|
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
I painted a truck a few years ago too late in the day, the dew makes the paint flat, because it keeps the vapors from escaping.
|
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
thanks man! thats what I fugured!
|
Re: Suburban K20 1986 Silverado
a buddy of mine offered to put the Burb in his garage during painting! very cool of him.
since I am inside I figured i do some more stuff repaired a hole in the rear fender. repaired some rust and holes in the cargo door and making some progress it now has 4 layers of white on top. finally no red coming through. I have one coat of black on and need one more. the black covers like the best. allmost in one coat. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-A...0/IMAG0626.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-J...2/IMAG0624.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-5...2/IMAG0623.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-0...2/IMAG0622.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-u...0/IMAG0619.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-n...2/IMAG0612.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2...2/IMAG0641.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-V...2/IMAG0640.jpg I need to take the rear bumper off to paint the red thing between the bumper and the chassis. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-U...2/IMAG0637.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-m...0/IMAG0636.jpg it looks kinda nice without the running boards. I might not put them back on. I do need a step of some kind so grandma can get in the car. any ideas? |
