Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Russell, it usually means that you have a passenger car ignition switch instead of a truck unit.
The problem is that some money grubbing soul determined that they were interchangeable, and the truck units don't seem to be getting reproduced anymore, yielding our plastic ignition switch placards incorrect for the switch.
I don't think the passenger car position indicators match very well, which is why I stubbornly installe a brand new truck plastic piece on my brand new passenger car ignition switch on my '57 truck.

Anyway, I sanded my firewall for a couple hours, and got really bored with that, and painted it anyway. You can't see where I stopped sanding, because Iadded some hardener/accelerator to the paint and it kicked pretty fast so I hand buffed it at the sanding edge, so that is good. Someday, I will get it painte right.
It looks nice with fresh paint under the hood.
I blasted the inner fender panels and used a file to clean up the area where I used the die grinder to open them up to clear the upper control arms.
It appears someone cut them with tin snips while they were installed to get to the back side of the upper shock absorber bolts. I cut that area out, and will probably add some metal or rubber there.
It's coming along.......I got my aluminum water pump today, but unfortunately it isn't much lighter than the cast iron one. I'm still planning on the aluminum heads, aluminum water pump, and aluminum radiator to raise the front up about 1/2"-3/4" to make it look better.
Setting the old Iron head engine in it without the bumper and grille made it low, so this can only help. If it doesn't work, I will just have to either go big block springs or have the current ones re-tempered.
I bead blasted the horn relay, and it looks new. I am going to use the old original voltage regulator holes to mount a master cylinder reservoir.
I now have so many tubes along the left frame rail that it looks like an aircraft wheel well. I am only going to add a fewmore, I need a vent line for the stick portion of the trans and a vent line for the overdrive portion, and master cylinder remote line.
Maybe I will run the vents under the bed, or to the right side.I acquired a 2 3/4" big brake set-up for the rear, but the backing plates are so rusty that I should have them either dipped or sand blasted. Since I bought new shoes for the 2 inch brakes, I will run those for a while. I used the spring kits for the big brake set-up on the smaller brakes since it was new.
I also cleaned up the area around the truck really good because the Boss was coming back today and he likes a really nice clean facility.

The airplane is back, I need to work on it, so no truck work till it leaves again.......

Now I remember. I had forgotten about Chevie's having that style ignition. Since I already had the bezel with "lock" printed on it and since my new switch was actually a car switch anyway I went back over to the Classic Chevy parts store and got a car tumbler. I like it.

In case anyone didn't know this, you can remove the key when it's in the "off" position and start the vehicle using the knob. The "lock" position locks it.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

I got the new engine on the run stand ready to install.
Added aluminum water pump, installed the serpentine belt drive, swapped the carb studs and installed the longer studs , spacer, and carb and air filter stud and K&N filter.
Installed the MSD billet distributor, timed it, and installed old plugs to keep out the dust but who cares if they get broken. Painted the rocker covers with the correct corvette "rocker cover paint". I just wish they were a little more silver. Too bad they are magnesium. IF they were aluminum I would get them polished.
Removed the run stand exhaust, disconnected the run stand battery and fuel supply, installed the truck's fittings in the fuel pump.
Swapped fuel lines.
I use a frantz toilet paper filter, so I installed the fittings and the lines, drilled and tappd the intake manifold for the return oil.
I am running an 89 corvette engine with a water/oil cooler, so ran the tubing for that and the short hoses. If that cooler doesn't do much, I will re-install my B&M oil cooler. I am betting It will be a mother to install next summer when it is 113 degrees outside.
Mounted the knock sensor as a block plug (for when the TPI gets installed), drained both sides of the engine so it will keep the floor dry when I'm installig the engine.
Installed the trans mount on the trans and installed the shifter mount and the linkage.
Drained the overdrive and drained the 4 speed part. Refilled the 4 speed, but will add the ATF when the trans is in for the last time and the trans cooler is connected.
Measured the original drive shaft, and it will fit!
started making the rear axle brake line clips.
I am beginning to think that lightening up the front of the truck only ofset the weight of the serpentine belt system. That stuff is heavy!
The firewall is still curing. I could smell the fresh paint all day.
I still have to buy some headers. The block huggers I have don't fit. so I will have to get rid of those. Too bad, they are brand new too.
Got a new optima red top for it, and set it in the battery box.
I'm thinking I will mount the MSD box on the bottom of the battery box out of the way. I will have to start making those brackets before I put the fenders on.

I had sanded and painted the upper dash last weekend then wiped it down with acetone before spraying - MISTAKE. It had flashed off and I thought all was well but it softened (I guess) the remaining paint some and the final finish looked bad in a few spots.

Color sanded w/220 wet/dry and resprayed today only to have a bit of alligatoring in a couple spots - DAMN! I waited, let it tack a bit then added a fairly heavy final coat and it settled out a bit. I'm hoping (fingers crossed) I can color sand with 1500 wet or dry in a couple days, clear it and all will be okay. I'll post pic's once I spray the bottom of the dash. I'm doing a two tone idea; I've gotta see if I like it before posting it.

I use denatured alcohol for grease and wax remover{not to drink} acetone is ok for bare metal but like you found out too aggressive for primer I let paint problems sit for at least a week or longer before fixing them.My old DuPont book says 3 weeks.I still have a lot of the old stuff stuck in my head.

Sadly not very much for the past few days. On the up side I have been working to midnight every night to get a cpl of large leather orders out. Leather orders = money to be spent on "old four eyes". Tomorow is my B-day and my rule is never to go into work on my b-day, so I'm taking friday off too. Monday is a holiday so that gives me 5 days to show the apache a bit of love!

mounted the fenders that aren't made for the truck, they don't look pretty and I had to gap them up and in to prevent the tires from rubbing but they will keep the rocks down until I can track down some used factory fenders to refurbish.

Cursed at it....Oil Pressure gauge not working, problem with a relay that when jumped works but 2 separate relays don't work. Annnd before those problems came up I couldn't get the fuel injectors to fire.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Indirectly I took a BIG step today. My old oil-less, nosiy-azz compressor finally bit the dust a couple weeks ago. I wanted a much bigger compressor so I could run a large standing sandblast cabinet I bought on CL awhile ago. Virtually all I'd seen were too expensive for my budget. The one I'd decided on was the standing U.S. General one from Harbor Freight. Over 14 CFM and $899, currently on sale for $799 and with 20% coupon it is down to $639 I think. Found a used one today for $265!! I'm pretty happy about it.

I find the only way to keep from rushing when it comes to any painting or anything that needs to set up is to keep a couple of cases of beer on hand.

Friday:
primered my fenders so that they wouldn't start to rust with the weather changing, and started to mediablast the inner fenders.

Saturday:
did a rough fit on the truck to make sure I wasn't out to lunch on my sheetmetal work, and trimmed the door gaps

Sunday:
fit the inner fender pieces and trimmed to fit over the upper A-arm
searched for hours and hours to find the tabs to attach the inner fenders to the firewall.... no luck

Got annoyed that I couldn't find them so I decieded to do a major clean up and re-organize myself/ shop (again)
Pushed the truck out, cleaned and washed the shop floor and started digging through all my stuff ..... still can't find them:waah:

Came home, cracked a beer and ate turkey till I fell alseep

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

No pic's just yet but on Sunday I finally got around to working on her. Sanded the hoodand roof for primer then decided to take on a longstadning need - chip outthe fractured sealant in the rain gutters. I use my trusty heat gun and a sharpened, cheap Chinese screwdriver and that stuff came out fairly easily. Very, very minor rusting in two places, basically where finger tips over the years gribbed the gutter from driver and passenger. (I wonder if there is a correlation? Skin oil + 50 years exposure = sealant breakdown?) Anyway, I MAY have to do some very minor repair or I may be able to get by with applying some KBS RUst stuff to it. Pic's later.
