I think having the braces on both sides would be a wise choice...especially since there isn't going to be any vertical bracing to the top frame rail...I would like mine that way too...if possible.
Thanks - Jeff BTW - your work looks awesome...can't wait. :) |
Not a problem with extra support. The reason I did not put another piece on there is because it did not line uo with any other holes. I will try to get a design going for support on the top also. Thanks for the input, that is what makes everything work out..ie think tanks etc...
I will see if I can work it to where the bolt holes will line up on the other side also. Shouldn't be too hard. So I guess all the older model trucks did have 2 bolts for the tranny member.. |
Bob, I would like mine to bolt up on both sides also if you can. Thanks, David
|
No problem, I am working on changing the design right now.
|
I'll be throwing in a few bucks for the extra bracing. Especially if it can reach the top rail too. :D
|
Hey guys, I got a new job, don't worry I am still working on those xmembers, I will have them ready soon.
|
Congrads on the new job. Take care of your stuff first. I don't mind waiting for mine. THANKS!!
|
Congrats man. Our economy sucks right now.

New Job
Well I just got home from the new job today, Had to crawl under a few mobile homes though:( Thats Ok because I need the work.
I just wanted to thank you guys, This is the best forum ever!!! I will be getting to work on those xmembers again in the next day or so and hope to have at least 10 done by monday. If anyone has a pic of a xmember that was made by someone else I would like to compare it to mine, Just curious how others have done it. I have made it so that it connects with both the top and bottom frame rail and has the 4 bolt holes, all for added rigidity. Thanks for all the support and patience Bobby:flag: :D |
Bob76....
I will take one to for 30 + s&h. I have a 78 chevy with a 350 trans with 2 bolts. I would like mine to have the extra support to. How much more will you charge for one that goes top and bottom? I am tight on money right now but I think it is worth it to have the extra support. E-Mail or PM me with your address and details, and I will get a money order to you. Aprox. what will shiping be to 32038? North Florida.
Thanks, Michael |
any progess on these? im almost to the point where i want to start spending money again! :D
|
Just giving this a bump.
|
Sorry about the long delay guys. I had been working about 16 hours a day at the new job, well it seems they needed me to get caught up with their overload of work and now they don't need me. So I will be continuing to work on these this week. I will get this set ready and let you know. I am going to start a more stock type of design and see how it works out. I am in the process of getting my garage cleared out today, and will be setting up a good work station tomorrow. this should allow for more efficient use of time for me. I appreciate everyones patience. Please e-mail or pm me with the year of your truck and if you have a single bolt rubber mount or a double. this way I can be sure to get the correct x-member to you. Thanks again.
Bobby |
No big hurry Bobby. We know you were working after losing your other job. I'll check my truck tomorrow for the tranny bolt pattern and let ya know.
You better be ready to make plenty of them once we get them. :D |
I am planning on it. I am also going to start fabrication an a tranny member and motor mounts for 55-57 chevy cars. Who knows if this works out for me I may not work for anyone else again....(dreamin again) I can build just about anything I set my mind to. So if you need anything else fabed up let me know.
|
How about a C-notch kit? I will be C-notching mine too. I have bought some 4" lowering leaf springs. Once I adjust the 2" shackels and hangers I have now with the new leafsprings, I'm pretty sure I'm going to need a notch. The metal would have to be pretty thick guaged too.
|
I actualy thought about it, just haven't designed anything yet. I will have to notch mine so I wanted to fab one up, maybe sooner than I need mine.

I was thinking the ones with extra support would be a good deal at $45 each+ sh. I should have a pic of the new design tomorrow.
|
just a not on the trans mounts... 1 bolt vs 2 bolt. they are both the same height, so if Bob wanted to set up, and make just one crossmember, all you would have to do is switch to a 2 bolt mount, or a 1 bolt, depending on your application.
personally, i'd prefer a 2 bolt, just for the added security. |
I could do that. The x-member is the same all the way around except the mount holes. I can do them all with 2 or 1 hole, it is not hard to drill the hole so I can do it specificaly for the truck if wanted. It all depends on the guys here that want them. I have the new design finished, I will take some pics in the morning and post. I am having a shop cut slotted holes for frame mounts. I want to make sure they will all bolt up to each frame, there could be some slight differences in the position of the holes depending on where the truck was built and how the factory jig was set up. I should have several built and ready for shipping by mid week this week, I will let everyone know when they are ready so you can pay via pay pal or send the money. You can see all the seams are welded. I left none undone.

I will be adding the flat steel pieces to it after I get the shop to slot the holes. It will have one on the top and bottom of both ends. I can drill the holes for the tranny mount or I can leave them un-drilled and let you do it. What do you guys think.
|
WOW, now that's a custom dual hump tranny member!! Very nice job. If you put them on ebay you can probably make a small fortune.
I can't wait to get mine. I'll check my truck tomorrow for the bolt pattern on the tranny. The slotted adjustment is a really nice touch. Especially for anyone that may have frame damage and does not know it. OOOOO, that just gives me a woodie!! :D |
I was helping my dad put a 700r in his 72 last weekend and the bolt holes of his stock double hump member would not line up. that is why I thought of the slotted holes. I did notice that it appeared as if the xmember for his was the same as the 77 stock double hump member. Does anyone know for sure? Are the frames the same width? I did not have a chance to measure.
Thanks for the compliment on the xmember, I personaly did not like the way this one ( first built one) turned out, But the others will be better, I found things I needed to do as I weld them to make them look good and be practical. |
The 72 is a problem. GM did not make the 700R4 until 82. The 72 probably had a 350th tranny in it. The 700R4 is a few inches longer. That is one reason the holes did not align properly. If you used a 82 or later truck with a 700R4 then the bolt pattern will fit for any 82 and later truck. 73-81 trucks frames have to be drilled to fit the 700R4. I think even holes for the 350th tranny crossmember are already drilled in the frame in all the 82 and later trucks.
|
You have mail, Bob! :D
|
Bob, i'm not trying to rip on your design, it looks great. but are you sure that it will fit between the frame rails? my double hump was a bit of a trick to get into my 86, and its pretty much flat. maybe removable supports that bolt to the top of the frame would be a better idea? just an idea...
|
I have tried it already and it worked great. I have a frame that I have been using for the design process. You have to put the drivers side in first and then slide the xmember into the passenger side. I thought about that when I designed it. I may try to do a bolt on brace though. It would be less welding and easier shipping. I know what you are saying about having problems, I had some problems with my dads 72 last weekend. We did get it in there though, it was a stock double hump also.
|
I like that alot!! I will definatly take one of those!!
|
Okay I checked my tranny mount. It has a one bolt type. Can I convert over to the two bolt type without changing the tailhousing? My 700R4 core is from a 85 Camaro, which is probably why I have one bolt instead of two. I remember I had to take a mount back to the parts stores because of the difference. Now if I rember right there are two bolts for the mount that bolt to the tail housing. Two or one that go into the crossmember right?
|
I realy don't see a need in you converting your mount. most of all the 73-early eighties trucks only had one bolt on the mount. But to anser your question, you can convert it to a 2 bolt one by buying a new mount. I can drill it for one or 2 bolts whichever you prefer. Just let me know.
|
crossmember
That new crossmember will bolt to the top and bottom rails for my heavy duty towing I do? If so, I hope I am still on your list. 2 bolt trans mount. I have a 700R4

OK guys, The shop has delayed my order for the braces a day so it will be monday before I get them. I am making them a bolt on bracket for easy instalation and shipping purposes. I will be shipping as soon as I get them. That is the only thing I need to finish them up. I would like for everyone who wants one to PM me with the # of bolts the rubber mount needs and Shipping info. I will return your PM with the shipping cost to your zip and the total price, When I recieve the braces I will then PM you and we can arrange for payment. I do have paypal, it is my wifes Yahoo acct. so please don't RIP me too bad.....:) I need an exact account of everyone who wants one and the bolt patern to insure you recieve the correct x-member.
Thanks Bobby |
