Not much progress but I'm preparing to bag the front here soon
I cut out the center stake pockets and unbolted my front wheel tubs
And I got the rest of the stuff for the front end

Next Tuesday I'm off so I'm going to start Monday night when I get off work
The plan is to get the bags mounted and aired up with schraders
It's going to bottom out on the shock till make a upper shock relocation bracket

I'll still take them off your hands
They can come in handy for templates
I just put a piece of cardboard to the bottom of the spring pocket and traced it
I'll line up the bag in the center and trace it to get my base

Let me know when your back ill pay for shipping

Re: 1970 project/ DD "instant death"

I grew up around hydrostatic and airbags so its in the blood
It's more of a curse lol I can't avoid it

And it's kinda one of those things
When you start to go lower it just gets closer and closer to the ground

I'm trying to get my first car back
It was a 70 vega, kinda ironic lol

When I was in high school I did a 350 swap with a Muncie 4 speed
Sickest car in the parking lot

I was in some tough times and had to sell it
But if I can that will be my second car/toy

Re: 1970 project/ DD "instant death"

Got some work done yesterday
Got my bags mounted in all 4 corners now

Not a big fan of the results
Did quit go as low as I was hoping but I have something up my sleeve to get it another 5" lower without a dropmember or z the frame

Forgot to take some pics

Before

Not gunna need these anymore
http://i1341.photobucket.com/albums/...psf9a0e524.jpg

Tear down done
Now to get some stuff done
http://i1341.photobucket.com/albums/...ps81f89420.jpg

Got my plate in place with one bolt to keep lined up while I do all my measurements and make placement of the bag
http://i1341.photobucket.com/albums/...ps784fa290.jpg
http://i1341.photobucket.com/albums/...psc1563221.jpg
http://i1341.photobucket.com/albums/...psfe552a68.jpg

Got the holes drilled
And plate mounted back up
http://i1341.photobucket.com/albums/...ps315fbbf8.jpg
http://i1341.photobucket.com/albums/...psb918cb9e.jpg

Not to happy with the welds
Welder was on the fritz again I think due to the ground issue
The clamp isn't strong enough even with bare metal surface
So I'll have to barro my works miller real quick lol

Re: 1970 project/ DD "instant death"

got the control arms from my buddy who took them off a 68 thats getting bagged.
so i have some fresh stuff to work on
ill modify these and just bolt them in since its my daily driver
i decided to cup them 3" and move the lower balljoint up 2"
shrinking the lca 3/4" to remove the uca shims
and pie cut the upper to prevent binding of the balljoint

Re: 1970 project/ DD "instant death"

Are you happy with the amount of lift you get in the rear? If you moved your bag location forward onto the trailing arms (ahead of the axle) you would get much better lift and ride quality because of being able to operate with less air pressure in the bags. I suspect in order to get enough lift you have to run a lot of PSI in the rear which makes them ride like a Conastoga wagon.

ya i like the way it rides, i get 13" of lift out of the bags if i need it.
i cruise with appraox 20psi in the rear and approx 55 in the front

i concidered running the bags up front on the controle arms for the extra lift but didnt really need it.
i know there is alot more factors with the bags mounted near or on axle but it still drives like a caddy.
thank you for the advise tho

body drop?

iv had my fair share of bag jobs, but this is the chance i finally had to bag my own c10 so some things im fairly new too.

i know allot of you guys have done a stock floor bodydrop but i want to get lower.

can you guys hook me up with some pics of some 67-72 body drops, im thinking like 4"

iv done several yotas but it seems like a different process due to size and frame design

Re: 1970 project/ DD "instant death"

since ill have time to do it in a couple hours im going to do the stock floor body drop and z the front frame horns till i can find the time to do a full body drop

this will only give me about an inch but thats one inch more that im closer to the ground

Nice work. I have a totally unrelated question to most of your thread. What kind of rims are you using, and where did you get the baby moons? And how do they stay on the rims? I don't see any tabs or anything to keep them on. I have some 16" steelies from a Ford (don't be haters) and want to get baby moons.

They are the stock steelies (6lug)
They coincided these full moons
There is 4 bumps or tabs that the hub caps stretch over
I'll try to get some pics

Scored on the hub caps at the local car swapmeet we have (big3)
$40 for the set of 4
I picked up an extra one for the spare I'm looking for a rim for

Re: 1970 project/ DD "instant death"

Maybe if you had at least used new steel?
Old rusty diamond plate and 55 gallon drum scraps just seem a little unsafe for something as important for saftey.
Plus it looks like the sides where you cut all the support away are kinda thin.
If they fail it's not your life that worries me. It's the family returning from the mall with grandma that you happen to crash into causing "instant death"
This just looks a little sketchy.
But otherwise, great work!

One more thing.....Please consider a short bed conversion.
Your friends and neighbours will thank you.

vegadesign 05-18-2013 01:43 PM

Re: 1970 project/ DD "instant death"

The dimond plate looks worse in the pics, it's actually not that old
It's scraps from the s10 I bagged not long ago
It's 1/4" steel so it's plenty
If it was any thicker I would be just putting more work into it

The shortbed conversion is out of the question
To me there's nothing like a bagged longbed, they just look so much better layedout

And thank you

Haha, good man! So many guys are just convinced that the only way these trucks can be cool is if they are shorties. I love them all, but I love the low longbeds and longbed steppers best of all.

Good fab work man.

wraprail 05-18-2013 06:34 PM

Re: 1970 project/ DD "instant death"

Thats cool.
That spot where your cup is open closer to the bushing is where I was talking about T metal is thin/narrow in that area. Would hate to see it bend or even worse fail alltogether.
Have you considered a frame Z?
I just compleated one and it really is not hard to do. Has many advantages over what you are doing here. You are going to find that your lower arms are going to be dragging scraping all the time. With a Z you avoid this plus you raise your trans, exhaust and you can even center the wheel if you want.
Plus your not cutting suspention parts which should awalys be avoided.
Just a little advice from someone whos been there.
