Ironically this just came in the mail.
It was used in a few GM's in the early 80's up till 87'. Now waiting for a plug for this module to change on my wiring harness. |
Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
great build!!
Just wondering if you got your belly plate with the bends already in it or did you put them in yourself? I want to plate the belly of my burb and since the 205 is still in the factory position Ill need multiple bends similar to the factory skid plate |

A few pics ;The job went smooth and no problems.
You can see(sorry blurry) the build up of carbon tracking from the small contacts in the cap as well as the small hold down screws that are easily broke off with even a hint of corrosion present. The 2 connectors on my harness that were changed to fit the big cap was all that was needed for this distributor to work everything fits. Will see how it performs as time passes and keep posted' strangely enough it seems to idle better from the get go? later... |

Well it was time for ol' black to shed the rusty old steel wheels and almost obsolete 16.5 tires.
I found these for sale locally and after reading and watching vid from a member on here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6dlwm5IUcw( thank you very much). I am waiting for lug nuts from feebay lugnutking 32 LUG NUTS DUAL EXTERNAL THREAD 9/16-18 8 LUG NUTS CHEVY, GMC 1971-1988 should be in soon and let you know how the install goes. 315/70/17 BFG all-terrain KO stock hummer H2 tires & rims |
Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
Great thread.
I I've been collecting parts to do about the same for my `72. I have a `96 4500, Duffy planetary box, and round pattern 205. I parted a suburban I got from a prepper to get the 205, iron tailhousing, AA bellhousing, the TC, driveshafts, pedal setup, hydraulic clutch bits, clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, crossmember, etc. The best part--I sold the rest for $700 more than I paid. The worst--the flywheel is counterweighted, which says the engine had a 400 crank. I'm a moron. I swapped the long 32 spline input on the 205 for a new shot one for the cost of shipping with a pirate person. I also flipped a broken 4500 for $300 parts money in a few day for grins. I paid 600 for the trans, and 600 for the box and got 1000 for the part out and trans flip. Anyway, I have the bits to convert less the cut/lengthened driveshafts money for a hundred. Now I need a trans jack and ambition. After that I'll nuke an axle and have to go to tons. :) To the OP, I'd be interested in lots of pics and/or talk about the PTO winches and setup. I have a 12k Ramsey in the garage I don't know what to do with... |

Frankon- It seems you like to wheel and deal parts like myself.:canada:
A 400 small block we built years ago for a buddy; we used a pioneer counter weight you simply bolted under the manual trans flywheel sourced from any of the other 9 small blocks from the 2 piece era... He drove that truck for a least 15 years after until he sold it. http://www.northernautoparts.com/part/pp-fbp2 The trans jack I use is the cheap add on you use on your floor jack.A piece of 2x2 square tubing bolted to the jack plate with the trans mount center bolt pattern in it then bolt it directly to the t/c mount. As you see in my thread my PTO is a dana/chealsea duel shaft on my 205 and runs at 90% of input speed. I use my nv4500 and 203 high/low for 10 power in speeds and 2 power out running one winch at a time ;If you look close I installed loops on each winch driveshaft for safety.I am able to winch and drive at the same time. I just made a video of something me and the young lad put together for another use for the rear winch (other than pulling vehicles on the trailer behind). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMeN5...ature=youtu.be or |
Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
i have the same transmission adapter i used it the other day to reinstall my rear bumper and i was really hard to turn the treaded knob to ajust the angle of the adapter. is your the same, as a tranny is more heavier than a simple bumper?yes i lubbed the treaded rod

yeah and i still am going too. but like everything i plan, nothing goes acordingly, a VERY nice cucv almost came knocking at my door begging for a place to stay... counld pass up the deal and got very tired of working outside so i built a big 2 doors garage. now the 4500 is going into the cucv and i have other plans for the wrecker witch the 4500 was going into. one other thing that stopped me dead in my tracks is that i learned the hard way the difference between a pick up and a cab n chassis . the wrecker bed i bought doesnt fit on a pick up frame. so i got discouraged and took a break on that project. as of right now im trying to install a 15 000lbs hitch on the cucv and for those who know what im talking about its not a bolt on deal

OK I realized why I could not edit my post ? didn't pay my subscription. OOPS!
sorry about that JOSHUA. NOW- I decided to go with chrome caps from ebay ;cheapest option and they sorta look like the old locking hub cap from the spicer hubs on the 3/4 tons I always liked. I got the die-grinder out again and a cup of suitable size and cut center hole out for locking hub. These caps also have no logo as you can see. All done; but cup is no good oh well got it from a garage sale for cheap in the summer anyway at least thats what I told wife...;) |
Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
looks good!
|
Re: My nv4500 swap then doubler ol' black
Thanks Wrecked1982 I thought the chrome caps would clash but even with grey centercaps the chrome locking hub would still be there.
I was down your way to get 1 rim and tire not to long ago it was in Mount Royal? Also - I like your new to you Army truck. That rear bumper you took off , I could put to use! |

Re: "its all about ol' black"
Hi doubleclucker, I've enjoyed reading your thread and I have a few questions. I'm looking to swap my sm465 to nv4500 and I need all the help I can get lol.
Any problems with mounting the nv4500 the the sm465's bellhousing like you did? It's held up fine over these years? I have a mechanical clutch and I'd like to keep it and not go hydraulic. It's a bit rickity yet reliable, but mainly I'm cheap and I don't like what I've read about converting to hydro clutch. You said you used "the factory sm465 bellhousing (the 85'-up hydraulic one )", I'm just wondering if my older one would be different enough to cause problems. Can you elaborate on the nv4500 "rare 95 version with square top shifter and 5.61 first"? Basically I'm just trying to figure out what year nv4500 I should find. I prefer the narrow gear ratios of the later models, but the '92-'95 has the 5.125" input bearing retainer that is the same as the sm465. the '96+ nv4500s have a 5.6" input bearing retainer OD, but I suppose the sm465's bell housing could be machined to make it fit. I also have an np205 on my sm465 but it's the figure-8/bathtub adapter bolt pattern so I have some more problems to work it. Cheapest solution might be to get a np208 but then I'll have to change driveshaft configuration... Thanks! |
Re: "its all about ol' black"
MannyDantyla- That was my intention for this thread so other people can see different ways of doing things and maybe a little cheaper.
I am in the works of buying a truetrac for a 14 bolt rear as its been open for about 2 years now sold the detroit cause I couldn't stand the slop no more! Though I did get more then I paid for it after 18 years later. Keep watching thread if interested I will post install here. As for the mechanical bellhousing it should be no problem I just prefered hydraulic.I have no issues to date and this truck ,as I said before; is a daily driver! 95' Rare version has 5.61 1st gear but still the old input configuration with clutch fork and the revised square top shifter. Your bathtub 205 is going to to need some type of adapter or you can find a np205 out or any crewcab squarebody from 86' to 91' but fyi only regular cab k30-35 series square of the same era had slide in yokes. Either one needs a short input from a 77-85 np205 behind a th400 or go the ebay option. Driveshaft configuration is required regardless. |

After this summer of muggy weather I have decided to swap in air conditioning from a donor suburban and a S10 blazer parts trucks.
My cab had a block off plate that had to be flipped over to block the heat only core. Then ready for the air box in and out and related vents. |
Re: "its all about ol' black"

The box wiring and the vacuum lines all came from donor Suburban with a little oiling of air doors and a new heater core(as they are different then heat only and a big pain to install) and basically bolted right in; new evaporator and silicone on firewall airbox and the cab was complete in one day.
Next is the mechanical components... |

Found this cool little light at the wreckers.
Never seen it before it was on a 91' blazer diesel mounted on the bezel at the lower left of the steering column and perfect for my tbi swap from a few years ago. I also had trouble locating those red and green seals for the back of the new compressor which should of came with it but does not. |

Well as I said earlier on in thread ; I sold my Detroit locker in the rear and its been open for a couple of years now.
I just ordered a Detroit Truetrac for the 14 bolt, it should be in by the end of the week and I will follow with pics for anybody that wants to see this new differential install. Also got my new carrier bearings ahead of time. 387AS with 382A race |

First off was to seat the new bearings on the carrier I found the accessories from the ball joint/ u joint press kit fit the diameters I needed for install because the inside bearing cones seat a bit below carrier input bore.
I know its dirty under there:lol: I live on a dirt road Next ,pull axle shafts out about 12" then grab a comfortable seat under truck and remove 14 bolt cover. A dial indicator to check backlash before disassembly yields .005 so right on the money. ...Some torque readings I needed for the job. |
Re: "its all about ol' black"
nice work once again, a dial indicator is on my to buy list! do you think its possible to install ac without installing more vent in the cab, like keeping the heater only vent doc?

For the A/C box- inside it is so different you will need it for sure. Also, like I said earlier on; the heater core is a real pain to get to and install in the box so get a new one before assembly as they are different then heat only. As you know how hot it has been up in our part of the country this summer; the A/C has been fantastic and well worth it and for years to come. |

10.5 14 bolt full floater have adjusting rings for bearing seating and backlash; just turn rings in toward hubs and the carrier can be removed easy without a spreader and no shims under carrier bearings.

Re: "its all about ol' black"
NICE!
I have to admit, I was a little Butt Sore you got rid of the Detroit in the rear and put in the True Trac in lieu of keeping the detroit and putting the True Track in the front. But hey, my Detroit came with my CUCV axles.... and I'm determined to continue to sell myself on the detroit locker. Yes, I'm cheap... and lazy!!!! Nice rig!!!! |
Re: "its all about ol' black"
looks like the locker is doing its job, i noticed that your leafs spring u bolt are upside down, is it a ''flip kit'' ?

How you liking the Truetrac? Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: "its all about ol' black"
Lnielson- Thanks for the compliment ;
as for the Truetrac i like it very much and it goes almost unnoticeable for the most part once in a while if i do "S" turn sharp at low speed on pavement it will chirp which reminds me its still there. I am considering swapping out my front lockrite for the maximizer diff on ebay looks like a Chinese version of truetrac ;but less then half price... good enough for the front diff that is not used too much. There does not seem to be any reviews or write ups on it that I can find so I may be the first on that keep watching... |
