Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Daily minimal update: emailed with 150 yesterday. I have to have a tac mod to pedal harness. The one that they cut both ends off and left the middle in the truck. Grrrr... And 150 does not make/supply them. (? PSI does) So now I gotta get one of them rollin' before I get to ship the harness to Spokane. Have I said Grrr? Ah, it'll be fine. Got nuthin' but time, Baby.
David- Thanks for the info, that's about what I'm in for, if I don't call and cancel out of sheer pissedness. Still waiting on them. Ben- Thanks for the recommendation. Hope the next opportunity for a CF goes smooth. I can say they're pretty bang-on with returning emails. Also, it'll be cool, they're making me a stub-out for back up lights, which we haven't had since we went to a van column years ago. Neutral Safety Switch will be a nice bonus as well. John- Good to hear! Roll by and mean-mug 'em till they get ma harness done! (when I, you know, get off my a$$ and send it to them...) Annnywayyyyy... Eric is supposed to roll over tonight and eyeball all this stuff and let me know what the move is. Then I gotta strip and stash a buncha stuff. Then if the weather holds and Flyin' Ryan can get the Super-Trailer outta the woods we'll go get the 'ol bucket of loosely assembled bolts and drag it back here to Doofenschmirtz Evil Inc. Awaaayyyy we goooo! |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
I think TAC harnesses are universal to all trucks that bodystyle. Easy to pull in the JY too.
|
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
It seems so, that's a little new for the PNP's. Crossin' my fingers!
|
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
I don't know why they would need the TAC harness to mod the main harness.
If you have both ends you can solder in extensions. To be honest, you'll have to take the connector on one end apart to get it through the firewall. I ran mine along with the DLC wiring through the old clutch grommet but had to pull them all out of their connectors to do so. |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
I'm hip, I'm sending them everything so as to be damn sure everything is talking before I hit the key. I have both ends, and I could do it I guess, but I'd rather have an unmolested piece. Hoping to go yarding Saturday.

Well, Eric came by tonight (in Rusty!) and he brought a spare tac-to pedal harness and some bellhousing bolts from his stash of LS stuff. Massive thanks to him! A huge load off my mind. Also thanks to Eric for showing me how some of the funky connectors come off to pull the harness, which is now on the floor, and answering a lot of dumb questions. Like I told him, I'm trying to catch all the things that are a 2 minute fix now, before they're a huge PITA later. Gratuitous shot for Johnny!
Hope to get it shipped tommorrow/Saturday. Attachment 1243391 Better without all the crap laying on it! Attachment 1243394 He also talked me into pulling a valve cover, where we found this- Eric sez: It's good!:metal: Attachment 1243386 Mmmmm cleeean! Attachment 1243389 Thanks for taggin' along guys, I appreciate it! |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Super clean! Amazing how trick these things are. My 2000 just rolled past 180k and runs like it's new. Thanks for the pics too!

I ended up doing an in tank Delco EP381 and an '87 tank, but I did also purchase an inline Airtex pump to use also. Indecision will be the death of me I guess, but at least I will be prepared. Since you have already put in the rear mount tank, I would use the external pump. I still have this one new in the box if you need one. |

Saturday Update Time!
Ok, so Eric has the perfect work schedule for running the 'yards on Friday. So Friday, my mere mortal self was at work and my phone was blowin' up with texts with news of the yards! Public thanks to Eric for finding a proper LS dipstick and a couple plastic pieces that I needed, which he stashed for me. But I couldn't go because.... Flyin Ryan and I went and got Yeller, because it was baaaarely dry enough to get the trailer out and we got it while the gettin' was good! Loaded UP! Attachment 1244145 Boppa's stoked! Attachment 1244147 The Kid had to go around the block one last time before it goes under the knife. Attachment 1244172 Don't nobody go nowhere, that's just Friday! |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Well, I got down to the PNP bright and early on Saturday, and found the stashed stuff, and some other random small parts. Thank you Eric! Only went to to one, I was in a bit of a hurry. Then I swung by Liberty Bend. Jackpot!
I got a steel DBW pedal and harness from an 04, and 3 (!) 1 1/4" dually swaybars! So stoked! Getting ready to make it happen! |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Good gettin! LBT needs a sway bar don't it? Yeller lookin sharp!
|
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
I already have one for it. Total of 4 now. And a big honkin' rear bar, and 1-ton springs, and..... no time to do it! LBT is back on boat and trash hauling duty at Boppa's. Got some plans marinatin' on it, and the Kid's literally worn a spot for himself ridin' my a$$ about it, so maybe something'll get done. Eyes on the prize, for now.
|
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Do those sway bars bolt on to the rear of these trucks?
|
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
No, the 1.25 bars are for the front, they bolt right up. Duallies have a good size rear bar, but they have a big cast mount plate for the axle end that is sized to the big dually tubes. I'm certain you could make something work, if you really wanted to. Plus they're sized width wise to the leafer setup in the squarebody trucks. I'm fixin' to measure the s-10 blazer rear bars and see what's up, some of them are real chunky. I was lookin to do the rear bar from a Camaro/TA as seen here-
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...507111&page=12 but they are pathetically small unless you find a FE3/WS6 car, and good luck with that! So, I'ma explore some options. Hoping to do some thing this week even if it's wrong! |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Harness, Computer and Metal Pedal are all boxed up and hopefully shippin' tonight. Something every day, no matter how small, right?

So, we had a little productive day yesterday. Got the harness shipped off, got my slow leaking tire and the stupid TPMS on the DIC on BBT fixed, then got the motor torn down. Guess I'm gonna paint it. Any ideas on color? I'm thinking Chevy Orange to go with the citrus theme. IDK, we'll see. AS always, pics for John.
Live action! Attachment 1245506 All stripped and ready for a bath Attachment 1245507 The whole mess Attachment 1245508 |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
That's wurkin! I'd agree with the OJ paint job too. I think it'll look sharp in there. Any other plans for dress up?
The acronyms are killin me... What's VATS, TAC, all that jazz? |

I vote for Chevy Orange. Although maybe you should consider Red since it is a new heart for Old Yeller!

Well, Flyin'Ryan and I were just discussing color (we work about 15 feet apart) and the current motor is black. Hmmm. The interior is dark gray, hmmm. I ws gonna hammertone gray the big bracket on the driver's side anyway. hmmm.
What about gray? I just painted a certain someone's truck for him to sell, and I know where some Dark Gray metallic happens to be. It's kinda growing on me. Here's what we're talkin' bout- with a yellow top cover to match the truck! :metal: Wish I could find a vortec Max cover. Attachment 1245541 Ps- There was (was) a 1" deep by 2 1/2" wide crease down the center of both these doors. |

I'm going to have to vote Chevrolet engine orange.... ;)
Damn, my garage is a mess. |

Yeah, but you're biased! Damn, that's a pretty engine.

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
While I think the LS engines look good in Chevy Orange, I just don't think it will work well in a yellow engine bay.
I say go with black or gray on the block and leave the heads natural... |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Yellow and Orange makes me hungry for some candy! I'll respectfully disagree about the orange and yellow not going together. I like black and gray also, but in a yellow truck in my opinion that seems a little too understated. Chevy engine blue might look pretty good too. Picking out paint colors is so damn hard. Good luck finding something you and your dad like! |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
I'd vote for orange or maybe bright red to accent the rest of the engine bay. I prefer several hues from the same color spectrum that complement each other. Helps define and delineate the various components. Monochromatic schemes tend to blend everything together. If I had a LS motor, I'd want it to really pop when the lid was lifted.

I need to post mine but I dont think I have any pictures on my work computer. Mine is black block, natural heads "smoothed" yellow truck intake yellow valve covers with a partial cover on the intake...
|
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Yeller is looking pretty sanitary as it is! Any color combo is going to POP dude. I say you've already got the gray, so that with some yellow accents.
|
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
No offense to the guys that have orange or red enginnes in a yellow truck but it looks too McDonalds McEngine to me. But my tastes are more conservative.
PS. Ignore my Jimmy. ;) |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Looking at the pics of the engine compartment of the truck, I don't think I'd do orange on it. I like the orange in a mostly stock engine bay, which all of mine have been, semi-gloss black core support, inner fenders and underside of the hood. But you've got a lot of yellow in there, so I think I would either go with the gray that you already have or black like it was originally, similar to the small block it has in it now. Then paint the cover yellow and then either polish the valve covers or just paint them yellow while you're painting the cover.
