Re: old style locking hubs
Thanks. The dial is a brass finish and I can see remnants of red paint...yet to be replaced by OEM Spicers :)

Re: old style locking hubs
I've got the same old style Warns with brass dial on my '71 GMC K1500.

Re: old style locking hubs
They would say Loc-O-Matic if they were. Just to be clear, I'm posting with early K/20 hubs in mind, but I guess this is all years. that said, I was going to mention Superwinches as new replacements, but they don't list the early hubs. They are nice hubs

Cool! SAE for short...clever!

Re: old style locking hubs
Thanks Tim on the tip of using oil outside of the bearing, did nt know that
Just replaced my warn locking hubs with OEM Spicer last week. Along the way i learned a few things, like the 6 bolts around the locking hub should be torqued to 35 IN./LBS. https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8622/...874f8b58_c.jpg 20150117_102129 |

Re: old style locking hubs
I seem to have lost my camera right after Christmas, or I would take my blue N.O.S. K/20 knob & keepers out of their boxes and get a picture for this thread

Re: old style locking hubs
These are from a parts shipment headed for Hawaii that sunk back in '72, salvaged in '03. The boxes are what some bearings cam in for a '99

Re: old style locking hubs
Hey just so you know LMC truck offers them in the 1960-1966 truck catalog. Not sure if they will fit your application or not. I have an original set on my 64 K10 truck with the original cardon joint front axle or closed knuckle axle. Good luck!

Re: old style locking hubs
I am not very computer literate, I don't know how to post pics from other pages but I can direct you to their web site. Go to LMC truck look up chevy trucks 196-1964 pg 91 or search k10 locking hubs the part number is 36-1563 they are pricy at $394.95 but sometimes you have to pay for what makes you happy and makes your truck so much easier to enjoy! I love the original ones on my 64 if my lock outs need replaced on my 72 suburban and these will fit I will pay the extra $200. These are brand new selectro hubs and mine are real easy to engage they feel like a real quality hub when compared to new style we have today. I'll continue to try and learn how to post pics sorry!

Re: old style locking hubs
Don't sweat it. I found them easily with your info. That's good to know. I actually have a set of old ones now, but good to see they still have them

Here is a link for anyone else that wants to check them out. I will personally have to see if they will fit my 72 when the time comes. |

Re: old style locking hubs
selectro hubs i have seen have a set screw or 2 hidding behind the hand dial were your fingers would be .
once you pop them out the hub face comes off and its like a normal hub removal after that point. |
Re: old style locking hubs
|
Re: old style locking hubs
see the dent in the hub on the top left corner of the second picture? is that whats limiting you from removal?
|
Re: old style locking hubs
^^^^good catch^^^^..I was looking at internals so hard I didn't see the dent..haha....with that said try taking the other side apart...

Here are some I got off of a 64 K20. Never seen any like this before. I rebuilt with spicer gaskets and generic O rings. Truck does not run yet so don't know if they actually work, but they look cool.Attachment 1703247

Re: old style locking hubs
A old thread but? Can the old spicer/lockout hubs from my 61 work on later big bearing hubs? the hubs are shorter than the 61's (for the disc brakes?) but the axle ends at the same place.

got a set of those in last pic on my k20 been wondering if i should swap them out.. |
Re: old style locking hubs
If you decide to get rid of them let me know. One of mine could use a better actuating cam. If you decide to run them, they are cool!
|
Re: old style locking hubs
ok, i`ll let you know if i swap, they are a little hard to get ahold of with hub caps on the front..not sure what rims i`m going to run yet.
|
Re: old style locking hubs
I haven't put hubcaps on with mine, yet. Good to know. My truck is not yet worthy of such jewels.

How about these? I don't think I'd like this set-up. "Do you remember what you did with that little tool for the hubs when I handed it to you the last time we needed 4wd?" |
Re: old style locking hubs
I thought those Phillips head screws were an odd choice.

Re: old style locking hubs
Can you imagine how those 'screws' would get pack with mud? And the slots aren't that deep. You would definitely want to keep a little wire brush tethered to that tool. And that tool? Better know where that is before deciding to hit the slop
I have one set of hubs that are, what I think, early automatic hubs. They are Dualmatic or Selectro. No knob, just a shiny stainless cover. It appears to be just press-fit on. I'll have to dig those out for pictures. I have never attempted to disassemble one |
