got the gauges yesterday as a matter of fact

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m.../IMG_8909.jpeg

but I have to do intake gaskets on the 49 swap donor sonoma tomorrow, so the 65 can wait.

Joe

When you guys mounted the seat did you use the stock brackets from that bench or modify it some?

I am planning on putting a bench from a 94 in my 64 and wondered how you mounted yours.

Thanks

stock 95 brackets on the seat, new studs up through the floor. BUT the wrinkle is that my truck has 100% of an s10 floorpan. so I dont think that tells you anything useful, sorry!

for a 60-66 floor I think the brackets are right on the sloped part of the floors, but I am not the expert.

edit: oh and I just had a brainspark on the headlight problems. The DRLs work great and then for some reason one of the HID would turn on, then blow the headlight fuse after which the other HID would turn on, all independent of the headlight switch. it was a 4 headlight system, and the replacement lights are technically a 4 headlight setup with an H3 high beam on each side and an HID low beam on each side. I wired the low beams of the harness to relays to turn on the HID without paying very close attention to positive and negative, after all its just turning on a relay. I wired the high beams of the harness directly to the H3 bulbs without paying close attention to positive and negative because filaments dont care a whit about direction. This would be all of it, except for the odd behavior of the lights.

my brainspark was, thinking about an H3 light, it has a lead for positive and grounds through the base. THROUGH THE BASE. so does the shield of the HID light. thought of it yet? where it doesnt matter to the filament, the grounds are shared between the H3 and the HID shield, so one H3 is obviously wired with positive to the base, shorting out the fuse on one light when it turns on and causing a wiring loop that turns on the HID on the opposite side. I used quick connects, so it should be fixable in a few seconds. I thoroughly screwed the pooch haha. at least I can laugh about it.

Re: slow ride (redux)

did intake gaskets on my 49 donor today! not a bad job just time intensive, about 6 hours including a new radiator, idler, tensioner, and belt.

look at how blown out the coolant ports are! (the four corners). someone had done this job before and made two mistakes, they didnt use metal gaskets and they didnt replace the manifold bolts.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m.../IMG_9170.jpeg

all back together, runs better than ever. If you have a 4.3 V6 with over 120k, you are on borrowed time!
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...G_8503JPG.jpeg

so now I can get back on the 65. got my timing set today
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8505.jpg

tomorrow I will drive it gently to the exhaust shop, I am not happy with the exhaust sound, it sounds a little like a blown out cavalier. I picked up a nice chambered muffler for the rear and will switch out the 350z resonator off the collector with the smithys glasspack, I think upstream it will have the desired effect.

Re: slow ride (redux)

did the timing chain!

bought an underdrive crank pulley for a "while I am there"
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8517.jpg

new timing set, I ended up buying a factory tensioner.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8505.jpg

like any left brained engineer, I dont do pretty much anything without studying in detail first. so I read and read and read about timing chain replacement. reading about it told me that there was a TSB for the oil orifice galley plug. when I cracked open the timing cover I knew immediately what the problem was, oil starvation on the chain. look at all that burnt oil, it was sticky like flypaper in there, meaning the orifice has been plugged for a while. the chain was so stretched out, the timing marks were about a half tooth off.

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8565.jpg

of course, in all my research and in all the how to's I read and watched (even a video in spanish!) nobody said I needed a 3 jaw puller for the crank gear. I mean, how the heck does everyone fail to mention that? so thats where I was, stuck till harbor freight opens.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8566.jpg

here is a funny one though, there is so much room under the hood of this truck with the 2.2 in there, that I can do the whole job from up top. And when I couldnt get the impact between the balancer puller and the core support, no problem :rotf:

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8564.jpg
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8563.jpg

anyway, I quit last night without a puller.

today:
the levitating 65

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8568.jpg

removed the old galley plug, new one from dealer was $1!
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8586.jpg

cleaned up
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8579.jpg

new timing set. this was harder than it should have been. the compression kept kicking the crank out of alignment at the slightest bump
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8580.jpg

buttoned up!
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8582.jpg

I have a running video but photobucket is so dumb about videos now.

took it on the highway and its a lot quieter but still lacks some top end. I will drive it again tomorrow, was still chasing an electrical fault. I swear to heaven next step is an eaton haha.

carved out the astray for the little larrys, need a holesaw for the gauges.

Is just beautiful !!!

I would love a steering wheel like that on my truck. (Like mine, but LOVE this one)

joedoh 02-08-2015 08:49 PM

Re: slow ride (redux)

thanks grizz, its a 66 impala steering wheel with a 65 corvette center emblem. I was at the swap meet this weekend and saw a couple 67 impala wheels and almost picked up an extra.

drove the truck around a while today, it kept getting better and better and better. I changed the fuel filter and now its amazing. its not a race truck, but I hit the stock speed governor around 85 indicated. Went to a friends house about 20 minutes away. he had borrowed my plasma and the old cart was kind of pitiful so he made me a new one as thanks
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8589.jpg
this is what he used it on, he just z'd the front but it looks amazing now, no more gangsta lean to the rear
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8590.jpg

I had to watch daylight because I still havent fixed the switch for the headlights but on the way home I cruised at 70mph in 5th gear and didnt have to downshift a single time, before the timing chain I couldnt shift out of 4th without it falling on its face and had to shift to third every time a gust of wind blew and slowed the truck down. Even the exhaust sounds better, but I am still going to change it tomorrow.

a little early to call success but it definitely isnt the slowest thing on the road by a large margin, and it cruises so sweet I had a grin just pasted on.

joedoh 02-11-2015 12:59 AM

Re: slow ride (redux)

here is the timing chain video, no more mini diesel!

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m.../th_timing.mp4

had the exhaust sealed up today, much quieter on the highway. doesnt look like 70mph but it sure as heck is, check out the 65mph speed limit sign. I am so ecstatic that it runs so well now, in 5th gear it wont accelerate very well owing to the 31" rear tires but a drop to 4th and it will get a ticket in 49 states!

Re: slow ride (redux)

thanks!

made it a little more bearable to drive today, the window felts and rubbers were just GONE, so the window banged around in the big gap and the wind just did what it wanted. got the 65 dollar kit from bowtie bits and found it fit perfectly, the longest part was the felts. You just take the wing window out like you are replacing the main glass, then the wing channel gets a nice fitting gasket and the door channel gets another.

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8694.jpg
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8695.jpg
the new clips on the felts need to be crimped shut slightly to fit and snap in, I broke two clips on two felts before realizing this. You cant take the old clips off the old felts because they are clipped to the metal backing of the felts and there is no way to punch those holes correctly, it must have been done in a machine similar to a stapler. I crimped the clips a little and was able to snap them in.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8697.jpg

on a scale of 1-10 I give these a 9, it only took about 15 minutes complete per side. the windows are so smooth now and dont rattle at all. My regulators seem to have trouble giving that last 1/4" up but it still seals well.

then I mounted the tank gauge

and the errant corner gagues
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8701.jpg

well we have had snow and snow and more snow, not that I am complaining.

http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8961.jpg

I got the carpet laid in today
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8997.jpg
It is about 2 inches shy of the rocker, I will look at the sill plates and see if they will cover it if not I bought extra carpet and will seam it in.

got the little larrys and new gauges hooked up. its nice to know the pressures, the MIC gauges didnt work very well.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_9001.jpg
I also picked up some krylon ivory paint, I wasnt a big fan of the giant rusty patches on the hood, the ivory matched perfect
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8999.jpg
washed the seat
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_8994.jpg

I ran out of daylight but I switched out the turn signal switch for the new one I had and it seems to have fixed that short I was chasing in the turn signals and headlights. I also put in the glovebox door and moved the heater controls inside the glovebox. I drilled the holes for the 66 back up lights, painted the custom cab stripes down the sides.

Is that stock carpet

joedoh 03-08-2015 10:23 PM

Re: slow ride (redux)

its a stock carpet for a 1998 s10 ext cab, which is what the floor pan is out of.

I got it from stockinteriors and I couldnt be happier, I knew it might be short on the sides but I wanted the carpet to match all the floor "bumps" of the s10 floor. I got it for an ext cab so I could cover the back wall, it worked out great.

Re: slow ride (redux)

so I figured out the headlights today, it is now a 24hr vehicle instead of daylight hours. right now it is low beam only though...
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_9003.jpg
and I know the reason why. that doesnt sound astounding when I say it but believe me there was a lot of rejoicing when I actually figured out what was going on. I looked up the wiring diagram but it didnt tell me anything I didnt already know, just verified that everything was wired correctly.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_9007.jpg
there are three states of headlights, drl, low beam, high beam. sounds simple, but there is a BCM in there. what was happening was, the low beams would come on with the drls, and the high beams would come on with the low beams. I looked all over for shorts, none, found a couple grounds that were off in the rear but wasnt optimistic that would fix anything. I started by metering out the individual wires and found out that...

ground is controlled by the BCM.

this was a revelation. In most everything DC and even some AC, ground is ground. you wire the 12v through a switch or relay or transistor or whatever and ground is just there. "plane" old ground. in an s10 with a bcm though, depending on the state, ground or power both can be switched. the DRL circuit for example, battery voltage to high beam + and only -11vdc to high beam -. I didnt figure this mattered much to me because the light I am using have an HID for low beam and H3 for high beam, with separate wires for each. I have the HID relay hooked up to the low beam wires, no problem there, and a big separate ground for the ballasts, and the high beam two wires wired to.. the... H....... ah crap. H3 bulbs dont HAVE a separate ground. I turned on the headlights and disconnected the grounds and sure enough, they stayed on. a couple screws confirm my suspicion.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_9010.jpg
so that means the "plastic" housing on these headlights isnt plastic at all.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_9009.jpg
nope, aluminum. there was the short I was chasing, I was pushing -14.4vdc alternator voltage back through the -11vdc BCM circuit. nice.
I will pick up some plastic screws tomorrow to isolate the h3 "ground" from the body ground. But for now I can drive the **** out of it any time day or night.

here are the pics of the glovebox I shooped de dooped yesterday.

plastic screws did not reliably isolate the ground, so I was stuck for a minute. I hopped on google and found out there was a type of H3 bulb called an H3C with two terminals, but it did not tell me if the base ground was isolated from the bulb ground. I found an ebay auction for some H3C for 13 bucks buy-it-now and free shipping, not a lot to risk, but WAIT, the auction happened to be ending in 3 minutes, and they were only $9.99 if you were the lucky bidder and no one else bid. The guy had multiple auctions so the only thing I had to lose was 3 minutes, but I did not lose. 10 bucks and a week later:
they showed up today, note the two terminals instead of the single terminal of the H3
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_9127.jpg
so I had to find out if one of the terminals was common to the base...
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_9128.jpg
Nope! freaking sweet. Its raining in my garage but I will give them a shot in a couple days. If it works, I will order some that arent hyper racer blue. :haha:

Also, one of the taillight housings has a short now. Bowtie Bits is local and has new complete housings with bulbs and lenses for 35 ea, or LED taillights with wired sockets for 58 pr. I am going to buy two new housings so I dont have to worry about it later, so thats 70 bucks, or save 12 bucks on the LED. I dont know if the LED type would look too modern on the truck.... I saw this truck in the LED thread and thats what started me thinking.

they look nice on your truck but I think I like the hot spot single bulb for mine. I think tomorrow I will just buy new buckets.

joedoh 03-21-2015 01:37 AM

Re: slow ride (redux)

well picked up some taillights
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_9137.jpg
and got my helper
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_9150.jpg
changed them out
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_9148.jpg

and fixed the turn signal problem and the right rear parking light problem, but not the fast blink right turn signal. The taillights are grounded to the buckets so its not a ground problem at the back. I looked over ever inch of the harness, I spotted what looked like a spider in one of the tag light sockets and it turned out to be a broken bulb so thats what was blowing the park light fuse, but cant find a problem with the grounds.

I tried installing the H3C lights too and they were too deep, hit the headlight bucket so I have to clearance that.

after messing with it a while, beeps and I went cruising. I didnt take any pictures today but here is one I like from the other day.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...h/IMG_9075.jpg

I did drive it to sonic tonight to hang out and have a cherry limeade, nice to drive it at night. need to adjust the low beams though.

Re: slow ride (redux)

amazing what I can do on the highway with no headwind.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...G_9169.PNG.png
could have gone even faster but the area is lousy for sheriffs.

but with a headwind, I top out around 71. so I made the decision to order some gears.
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m...41.54%20PM.png
got 4.56s. the 3.73 I have now with the big ass 22s is like having a 3.23 rear end and it just gets smacked trying to climb the aero load. the truck needs some torque multiplication. I would have ordered 4.30s, that would have brought me back to a 3.73 effective, but they were literally twice the price. this way I get a 4.10 effective on the overdrive, which should help even more.
I will have them installed when I shorten the driveshaft this week (assuming they show up in two days like they say)

Re: slow ride (redux)

I was out cruising and my wife asked me to stop by her uncles house and check on him. he was fine, his street has a funny little cul de sac and it was golden hour so I shot a few pictures. I wish the backgrounds were a little less cluttered but hey, it was just a spur of the moment thing.

gears will be here friday so I will start pulling the axle tomorrow. there hasnt been any wind the last two days so cruising around has been effortless, but there is still a big gap between third and fourth that will be made small and between fourth and fifth.

Truck looks great. How do you like the Little Larry valves? I like the simplicity and dependability of manual valves and the lack of junctions on those makes me think they wont leak as much.

joedoh 03-25-2015 01:22 PM

Re: slow ride (redux)

thanks guys

tiny, so far I like them. I have a small leak at the fitting for the front left bag I will need to tighten up, but otherwise, perfect.

I used MIC manual valves for years, in fact I have about 12 MIC valves just in the garage. Used to be able to rebuild them with some o rings but my last set has gotten sticky. time to move on haha

forget about using 1/2" line with the little larrys, the port spacing wont let the fittings, uh, fit. I was using 1/2 supply and dump and 3/8 bag lines, had to switch to 3/8 everything. but having it fit up in the ashtray area is super nice, better than under the dash, and the piano key switch extensions are easy peasy to use.

tinydb84 03-25-2015 01:58 PM

Re: slow ride (redux)

Thank you for the info. I was going to buy them then saw another member having issues with his set up. I plan on running smaller lines anyway. I only plan on airing up and down for parking really.

Re: slow ride (redux)

did some night cruising. all the poke and stretch guys were at central and west but I wasnt into that tonight. I'll give it a couple weeks and the minitruckers and old schoolers will dust off their stuff to bring it out, it was still a little cold in the 40s tonight.

thanks!

I started figuring up the bed wood today. I think 8" boards with 6 1/8" side boards will let me use 9 boards and 8 stainless strips

there are some pictures on page one, you can see everything but the actual pivot bushing. you have to have a tilt setup or some way to pull the rear tires.

funny story about that. we measured for shocks and figured out that some jeep rubicon unlimited shocks would fit perfectly, so I hit the local craplist and found some brand new takeoffs. the guy didnt just upgrade shocks though, he upgraded springs and lower control arms too. believing in the native american mantra of "use every part", I sold the springs on to a guy building a SFA toyota and we used the lower control arm bushings as the pivot bushing. I figure if it can hold up a 4000lb jeep, it could hold a tilt bed.

picking bed wood. I spreadsheet everything haha

decided on 8" boards, the factory setup is a combination of different sized boards, but I want it more uniform
laying it out, I got a new in box polished stainless strip kit with the 63 long bed parts truck, so all the strips will need trimmed. lays out nice, none of the bolts should interfere with the bed braces.

trying to decide if I need to spend 3x. if I do the $5 boards I may do the diesel/used motor oil stain on them, if $15 probably thompsons water seal.

picked up some awesome old school gear for the 65, some ancient impact truck boxes, a carver amp with T03 transistors and load based rail voltages, and a yamaha eq with an aux in.

Re: slow ride (redux)

I was out cruising today and ended up by this cool old car repair garage from the 30s that keeps falling apart. I was trying to stage the picture and took a couple quick snaps, I heard a car on the side street start its engine and didnt really pay attention, I was in the middle of this empty 4 lane highway and looking high and low trying to see if I was in a good spot. it was a sheriff :haha:. kinda glad I didnt pull over the broken chain/gate with the "no tresspassing" sign on it, even though it would have been a 10x better picture. you can see it in the second picture.

anyway, here are the 3 quick ones I took before being rousted.

Your wheels need no polishing if you are cruising.

Neat photo set, I always look out for coot photo locations.
