Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
That's cool! Truck looks Sweet! :metal: Yeah the 292 has a taller block than the rest. A 194-230-250 head will fit on a 292. Common to put a 194 head on a 292 as the combustion chamber is smaller which means more compression.

In my spare time (ha!) I am a board member of the local Wheelin With Warriors group and we had a meeting yesterday. One of the other members loves the pickup and was able to decode the bumper stickers for me. If I heard him right, it was a runway crew ordinance truck in Florida. I'm not sure how it found its way to the NW but it did  |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Wow, all the way from Florida to these parts. Mighty long haul. Dependability.

After the Jeep was finished in the garage, I pulled the 66 back in. I'm getting ready to pull the front clip this weekend and start prepping for the 292 and T-5. While I was spraying down all the bolts with Kroil tonight, I found that the passenger fender was welded to the rocker panel with a piece of a barrel. Who needs bolts????

While I'm doing the motor swap, I need to swap the ball joints out. I had ordered everything for the drum brakes and was going to do a disc conversion this summer with a donor truck. The 6 lug wheels have kinda grown on me and not having a ton of space to part a truck out, I looked at my conversion options. I'll have the CPP stock spindle disc brake kit at my door before too long :metal: |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Started tearing it down last night, the front clip will be off this weekend!
[IMG]https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1652/...e7f4541a_b.jpg I entered it in a car show in June, here's the list of things that will be done before then: 292 T-5 Hydraulic clutch Wilwood brake master cylinder Clean and paint the frame Front disc brakes 2/3 lowering springs Scrub the body down with CLR Bed wood? I'm hoping to reach my goal far before June but now I have a deadline to work towards :metal: |

I've been sick as a dog the last couple weeks but I was feeling good enough over the weekend to get some progress made on the Chevy :metal:
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1657/...315ff9ce_b.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1624/...e05dea86_b.jpg I should have the motor and tranny out on Sunday and then I can pressure wash the heck out of the whole thing, paint the frame and start installing all my parts! I have a CPP disc brake kit on order and hopefully I will be ordering a Wilwood brake and clutch master cylinder this week. Way too nice of parts for way too junkie of a truck but it's going to be so sweet! |

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
I will be putting a power rack and pinion setup on the truck at some point and I was curious how people have done it themselves. The setup from Unisteer looks sweet but the price tag is just not in the cards and since I have some fab tools and skills, I'd like to do it myself.
For those that have done it themselves, did you attach the rack to the crossmember? What about getting the geometry correct, did you space it the same distance from the crossmember as the center link? I could build a bracket similar to the Unisteer bracket that would pick up on the holes for the idler arm and the lower steering box holes too, I just am not sure how to go about lining everything up front to back so I have proper geometry and steering. Any help in this department is greatly appreciated! |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Another thing I really want to do is swap the instrument cluster out for one with gauges. Is this a plug and play deal or do i need to redo the sending units and wire harness?

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Brakes and hydraulic clutch figured out and ordered!
I purchased a 1" Wilwood master cylinder kit for use with manual brakes. Not sure if I will need a residual valve for the rear drums or not but I'll get it sorted out soon. Maybe rear discs too if I can find what I want. |

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Dad and I were busy over the weekend! We pulled the motor and tranny out on Friday and started cleaning the frame up. Yesterday after the Easter festivities, we got the bed off the truck. I gotta say that it was way easier knowing that I had all new hardware coming so we didn't have to save any of the original stuff. The whole back half of the frame definitely has more rust than the front! I've gone through probably half a can of Kroil just on the back half of the frame :help:
Pulling the engine https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1515/...05a0e5d5_b.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1501/...0ed85375_b.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1514/...c1a62a9c_b.jpg Starting the bed tear down. I worked on as many of the underside bolts as I could while dad was cutting the heads of the fender mounting screws. He did an X in each head and used a chisel to break the heads off. Worked great! https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1477/...cb1a16d8_b.jpg We also broke the boards loose of the mounting bolts and just cut the heads off with the cutoff wheels. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1668/...d52f4cb2_b.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1506/...2d605f84_b.jpg Dad swinging the hammer https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1553/...983febfd_b.jpg Blurry shot of my shop pup and shotgun rider, Rockwell. He's an awesome dog! https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1720/...cd7c31a2_b.jpg Bed wood out and bed off. We ended up cutting all the bolts that hold the bed strips in too. I'm going to redo the floor with some nice plywood when I'm at that stage. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1550/...f6a9795a_b.jpg All cleaned up with a Rockwell photobomb  https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1601/...7d40de33_b.jpg Plans this week are to pressure wash the frame really well and wire wheel what's left behind. I'll be getting some POR-15 and coating the whole frame with that. Pretty soon it will be time to start working on fun things like brakes and suspension :metal: |

Keep up the good work :chevy:

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
I didn't get a whole lot done on the pickup over the weekend. I did go to the swap meet on Friday and ended up with a pretty nice bounty though. I picked up a front sway bar, new bellhousing for the T5, all the mounting brackets for the 292 and an instrument cluster that has gauges instead of the lights. I'll be tinkering with the cluster and cleaning it up before I put it in the truck.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1495/...0508bdaa_b.jpg Saturday, I took the Jeep out to Cars and Coffee on my way to my buddy's house to work on his FJ40. I was able to park the Jeep next to another buddy's Coyote powered F100 :metal: https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1446/...24fe964d_b.jpg The task for the FJ40 was to get the 350 in it before the end of the day. That was my goal anyway, my buddy was more concerned with drinking and smoking with the neighbors. Oh well, I cut all the brackets, drilled all the holes and got most of the welding done so it was successful! https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1626/...f9cbca29_b.jpg No cherry picker! https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1616/...7cdfedff_b.jpg Yesterday, I started getting the 292 sealed up and put back together and drilled some holes in my firewall. I'm hoping this week to have the motor all sealed and painted :chevy: https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1631/...1f325338_b.jpg |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Nice finds at the swap meet.
Getting a lot done. |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Thanks!
I think I've hit the fun part where I get to install all the parts I've had sitting in my living room for a couple months. Last night I focused on getting the last couple things done to the motor before I could start painting it while dad came over and pulled the rear bumper off. It's got a hitch that was welded on to the rear crossmember that fought us a bit but we prevailed. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1630/...a5575b5b_b.jpg And my favorite part so far was getting that first coat of paint on the engine. I love it! https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1576/...28139255_b.jpg Tonight is looking like the night I will pressure wash the frame and clean a couple things up on the motor and give it another coat :metal: |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
glad you got a score at the meet,..i didn't get anything but sore legs and a sunburn!...lol...coming along nicely!

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Lots done yesterday! I clear coated the engine, pressure washed the frame, front clip and rear fenders, dad wire wheeled the frame and while he was doing that, I yarded the old steering and suspension off. We wanted to start getting some paint on the frame but I wanted to go to a Jeep cruise in for dinner so we called it quits around 4:30. I'm getting ready to order the Unisteer power rack and pinion steering kit today, I'm stoked for that!
Satin clear (engine paint) on the motor really made it look good https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1574/...90cba8df_b.jpg Front frame wire wheeled https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1671/...453f9b03_b.jpg Rear frame almost done. Just need from the axle back and then the inside as best I can https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1699/...93cb89d7_b.jpg My supervisor was napping on the job most of the time. It's hard to find good help these days! https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1542/...bcab6aa8_b.jpg Pile of parts :metal: https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1575/...9abf6c4c_b.jpg Dad smoked my Harbor Freight grinder  https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1657/...862228e5_b.jpg I also broke the Jeep coming home from the cruise in, I think it's just jealous that the Chevy is getting all the attention and money right now! https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1644/...f69e4a7a_b.jpg |

Hey looks like a fun build . I'm thinking of this style of truck next . Just so much more you can do to them easier than the 55 to 59's. Due to there chassi design and such . Keep up the great work . I'm going to tag along .

I never expected to separate the cab and frame but my buddy convinced me that I wouldn't regret doing it. He was totally right. It'll make getting the rest of the frame clean and slapping paint on it super easy. Hoping to have a freshly painted frame by Sunday. After that, reassembly can happen :metal: |

My buddy came by and helped me get the Jeep back together and the first coat of POR-15 on the frame. Got a few more steps to get the frame how I want it but I love this kind of progress!

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Haven't had much for visual progress the last couple weeks as I was waiting on the frame paint but I got that the other day and squirted the frame before the rain hit :metal:. I used a chassis black mix from Industrial Finishes; it's a urethane base and covered the POR15 super easy. I love it!
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1528/...63b192a5_b.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1461/...3b32fcfd_b.jpg Here's a shot of one of the motor mount towers, it'll look awesome on the Chevy Orange engine! https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1692/...3073d62c_b.jpg I also got a wild hare last night and wanted to show my firewall clean up off with a little wax. Looks great! https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1464/...0036867c_b.jpg I also discovered this number etched into the paint above where the master cylinder mounts. Anyone know the significance by chance? https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1474/...98417a3d_b.jpg Dad and I will be hitting it hard on Sunday and get the frame back mounted to the cab so I can start on the reassembly part. I'm excited for that step! |

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
This is such a cool build.
The fact you have your dad involved is even better. The waxed cab will look great too. And having your dog along for the ride...... Priceless. |

Wax looks great, look forward to seeing more progress

Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Thanks guys!
Saturday was an off-road day again but Sunday was all about the 66, and a little bit of dad's new toy, a 69 K20 ex Fire Truck. It's rad! My cab and dad's truck https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1574/...98f75efc_b.jpg We tinkered with his truck for a bit and then got busy on mine. First order of business was to put the frame back under the cab. It went super smooth, just like it had come out. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1552/...087ab03f_b.jpg I painted the underside of the frame and the new disc brake parts while dad cleaned and painted the rear axle. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1522/...2b0908c4_b.jpg Mom even stopped by to see what we were up to, she can't wait to see my truck finished! https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1543/...8f55e9b8_b.jpg Dad got the trailing arms put back in while I got the spindles on and passenger side rotor installed https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1462/...f317c983_b.jpg https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1588/...ab8be842_b.jpg Dad went to install the other rotor and caliper and just for fun, I had him verify that the other rotor was 6 lug. Turns out, they had sent me 1 6 lug rotor and 1 5 lug rotor. No big deal, I'll get it sorted out this morning. https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1611/...6ce00b26_b.jpg Passenger side all buttoned up. I love it! https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1467/...bb5822bd_b.jpg How the driver's side will look for a bit [url=https://flic.kr/p/FEvtcv]https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1718/...af87e641_b.jpg After we figured out we couldn't do anymore on the front, we moved to the rear and got the axle all bolted in. I'm still waiting on new coil keepers but everything else is on and looks awesome! https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1562/...fe67df4b_b.jpg We knocked a whole bunch of big items out yesterday and I can't be any happier of the progress we are making! I'm going to get the motor and tranny mated up this week and maybe even drop em in this weekend :metal: |
Re: 1966 C10 Project Truck
Great progress on the truck, and even better... quality time with your dad. Nice!
