Re: 1968 C-20 with 67,000 OG Miles Build Log/ Thread
Got a mexican blanket to cover the og seating material to protect it from tearing any further, minor tears but its original and I want to keep it nice. Its only original once:
https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2909/3...d6a3f478_c.jpgUntitled by James Webber, on Flickr Also, here are some pictures of it out and about, hanging with the modern trucks at homedepot my second home: https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3756/3...380f62cd_c.jpgUntitled by James Webber, on Flickr Here it is in the background while getting some granite counter tops cut and fit in a house: https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/633/33...0048a34a_c.jpgUntitled by James Webber, on Flickr Also I have all my brake lights, running lights, etc working finally. Mostly tracked every weird wire down and had to clean off a bunch of connections and grounds. Only waiting on a new license plate lamp to come in the mail, the original one had a bad seal and water corroded so badley that the housing and the bulb bottom were fused together... lol Also I order orignal keys for the ignition as I only have one and I am bound to misplace it sooner or later, gotta get the og keys recut at locksmith also, I have several samples of carpet coming in the next few days, I know the rubber mats are og in this thing but I want carpet and I need to track down some pictures of the OER floor mats installed in someones car to see if the green ones look any good... All for now, mileage is now at 68530 fwiw, already put 500+ miles on this thing without any problems |
Re: 1968 C-20 with 67,000 OG Miles Build Log/ Thread
Gonna do a little welding on this thing tomorrow on some metal near the rocker panels. Cant put carpet over rust and feel good about it. I have ordered por15 so that should be coming soon. Also ordered a bunch of fatmat sound deadening to put under the carpet. Lets see, I also ordered new stainless door sills from lmc, hopefully they fit halfway decent Ive read they might need a little massaging. Should have some pictures tomorrow once I cut the metal out and put some clean stuff back in.
 |

Gotta a little progress tonight, not as far i thought, need to buy an adapter for my welder plug, but that should be here soon.

Build sheet says your truck originally came with 7.50-17 tires. Those were the beefiest you could buy on a '68 C 20. Included were the super heavy duty 3 piece rims. Not surprised truck no longer has them. 1968 was the last year for mega wheel options for the C20, 1969 saw only 2 wheel offerings. C 20 tire options in the middle blue column.

Re: 1968 C-20 with 67,000 OG Miles Build Log/ Thread
Very nice looking original truck.
Not sure if you figured out your wiring issue yet, but a good thing to check are the ground straps. Should be numerous ground straps, box to frame, cab to frame, engine to frame...... If they are missing or broken it can cause many intermittent problems. I agree with above on not using 17" split rims. My 68 C20 has 16" factory steel rims to replace the old split rims. |
Re: 1968 C-20 with 67,000 OG Miles Build Log/ Thread
That thing is the coolest. Glad to see you both using and fixing a few of the things while making it look even better.

Re: 1968 C-20 with 67,000 OG Miles Build Log/ Thread
Carpet samples cannot get here soon enough I wanna throw the interior back together completely haha. also I have no sound deadening until my fatmat gets here, but that should be probably today later.
Here are my seat rails reinstalled, very subtle but I like the change: https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/750/33...80a23e98_c.jpgUntitled by James Webber, on Flickr https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/614/32...c6f9d3f6_c.jpgUntitled by James Webber, on Flickr https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2831/3...7b0d882d_c.jpgUntitled by James Webber, on Flickr Also I ordered a new license plate lamp cuz mine was toasted, but the one that came was nothing like the one I ordered, whatever, it was a very shiny chrome, I thought that wont match a single thing on this truck, so I scrubbed the housing down with some red scotch brite, hit it with some primer, and then some metallic silver header paint, it has a satin finish on it and I think it fits in nicely, the chrome wouldve looked ridiculous next to the crusty fender and tailgate: https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/670/33...3ed77730_c.jpgUntitled by James Webber, on Flickr Also here is my kick panel finished up, not super pretty but good enough to live with once I slap some carpet on it, definitely better than before: https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3820/3...57f86414_c.jpgUntitled by James Webber, on Flickr https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/757/33...95a56403_c.jpgUntitled by James Webber, on Flickr Next will probably be soundedning then of course some carpet if and when samples ever arrive ;) Also I got my correct GM C code keys from Classic Industries, way better looking that the random old rusty one I have. Just need to get it cut |

My '68 C/10 [also a Fremont truck] originally came with those tires. Rim was a 6 lug 5.25'' x 17.5'' unit. Great rims. Worked even better with 8" tires. 8R-17.5 Yokahamas were lively. I wore my rims out before I even hit 300,000. Go figure? But I was rough on 'em. I couldn't find replacements by 2001. Had to go with 16'' rims and 235/85/R16LTs. Nice original '68 Chevy. As far as the carpet color choice, I like the Teal sample on the left. A little more blue in it gives it character, but it's only my opinion. :chevy: |
Re: 1968 C-20 with 67,000 OG Miles Build Log/ Thread
I like the carpet sample on the left...

I like the center too, here's my interior, almost a perfect match. But I'm bias as a believer carpet should only be in cars;)

Re: 1968 C-20 with 67,000 OG Miles Build Log/ Thread
Definitely the center one
|
Re: 1968 C-20 with 67,000 OG Miles Build Log/ Thread
I went ahead and ordered the middle one. Even though its going to be a lot of teal/green/mint (whatever you wanna call the colors), I feel like itll be okay because old cars were weird and have colors that often wouldnt look good in modern cars but they can just pull it off. I also went ahead and ordered some floor mats as well. I need to get a new gasket for the trans pan as that leaks a bit. I need to track the leaks but I have now put 700 miles on the truck without any problems that I didnt cause myself lol. The door sills arrived and they fit without any massaging like I expected. Now I just have to wait on the carpet and I can focus on something outside of the interior. One day if the damn rain ever lets up I can Por15 the frame and body underneath.
I also gave the rusty tailgate and acid bath treatment and it removed all of the acid stains on the paint and it cleaned up nicely. Ill toss some pics up when it stops raining one of these days and I can get a solid picture. About to go on a big push on my flipping business with the properties so the truck is going to be spending a lot of time working with me haha. |

Happy St. Patricks day! May I just say that Jameson whiskey is the drink of choice for the night. Of course that means its time for a post on the forums. Shows how I spend my time. Ok folks. Update time.
Interior all tied up. I am glad I didnt go with black carpet. I think this gives the pickup a ton of character. Tied together with some green chevy bowtie rubber floor mats and new door sills: https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3757/3...29f3212e_c.jpgUntitled by James Webber, on Flickr My buddy has a 1959 Ford Custom 300 that he inherited, but it has been stored in his dads farm for 30 years. We pulled it out of the mud in the barn and moved all the chicken nests off it. We got all the wheels loose. and trailered it to his garage. The motor has only 5k miles on it in the 30 years. It has good compression and it turns over. Cant believe it after all this time. My truck helped rescued it and it didnt miss a beat. Here are some pics of the motor pulled and then after we cleaned and painted it: https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2839/3...82dffbeb_c.jpgUntitled by James Webber, on Flickr https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3762/3...7e0c8fc9_c.jpgUntitled by James Webber, on Flickr Got ridiculously filthy cleaning that thing. The pressure washer blew grease and sludge like crazy. note the guy with the chevy pickup working on a ford motor but wearing a VW jacket. I am loyal to no car brand apparently: https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3850/3...6beb1fac_c.jpgUntitled by James Webber, on Flickr Anyways, the c20 should be getting a couple more updates. I got the same tire size put on the truck on all four tires, since the rear tires were a lot larger (Previous owner wanted to use it for hauling wood). I have new 2" lowering springs waiting to be installed in the front of the truck, and then I am going to do a 4" drop in the rear. I just got all the parts tonight so those should be going in soon. Ill drop some before and after pics once competed. Thats all for now |
Re: 1968 C-20 with 67,000 OG Miles Build Log/ Thread
That interior looks fantastic! You must be happy with it. Glad to see your truck is a WORKING truck... my C20 is nearly done, it's a daily driver, haulin', pullin' and burning gas. Like a horse, I think they get sad when they're not doing what they were made for!

Re: 1968 C-20 with 67,000 OG Miles Build Log/ Thread
Well the past few days have been interesting. I sprayed carb cleaner into the carb while the car was wasnt running. And then I pulled the dizzy cap to inspect it and also rotor wear and the points. Threw it back on and I couldnt start it. Long story short I was just throwing parts at the thing hoping it would start. Threw new coil, new cap, new rotor, new points, new plug wires, new plugs (replaced them even though they were done like 1000 miles ago), and new batteries cuz the batteries were like 10 years old. What finally got it was just point adjusting. Now I know where to look next time. In addition to that though, I now have learned everything there is about the ignition system. Also this car starts up and fires unbelievably quick now, faster than any car I've ever owned. I have a carb rebuild kit coming at the end of the week so Ill make that a weekend project. Also I need to figure out how I can lower the rear end of this truck. Flip kit sounds like I need to notch the frame but I dont really want to go that low. Front is obvious, but since I am on leaf springs It doesnt seem as easy as if I had rear coils. Anyone have any advice for me to level the truck out a bit, I have 2" drop for the front and I want about a 4" in the rear? Remove the overload leaf? Buy arched leaf set? Let me know
|
Re: 1968 C-20 with 67,000 OG Miles Build Log/ Thread
I can't really help ya on the lowering question but I have to say it looks so perfect just the way it is... If you are going to be hauling things in your truck I think I'd leave it be but that is just me.

Detroit steel is coming out with 8 lug smoothies soon so once that happens there might be an altitude change and wheel swap. although I will keep the stock hub caps and run them on the bigger wheels, i will likely give them an acid wash and then clear them in a matte clear coat to preserve |

Playing around with some crude photoshop pics of potential stance for this thing. Re arching the rear springs will be done by a local shop just need to contact them. And I'll probably go another two inches in the front so I will be down a total of four inches. This how I expect 18" Detroit steel wheels with my hub caps to look roughly. stock height picture included for reference

I used to have a $10 dollar fan with a cigar plug connector. [Nothing ''Old School'' about a USB connector]. It would swivel back and forth if you set it up.
The problem I had back in the day was that my goofy longhaired friends would get their pony tails caught in the fan action and howl very loudly in the cab. It was funny, but untangling all that hair from the fan spindle was a pain. |
