Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Weekend recap:
Friday: mounted new tires. Sumitomo Encounter HT 235/85R16 on freshly painted rims. Saturday: Had the running board offs for body mounts. Sand blasted and painted rockers and the bottom part of the doors. Drilled holes in running board brackets I welded together. Installed running boards. Set dwell, played with timing. Installed starter heat wrap. Not sure if it was the timing or the heat wrap, but it made an incredible difference. Sunday: Installed a new heater core. A/F gauge seems to be reading leaner than usual. Not sure if I got an exhaust leak, or if it is just because of the fluctuating temperatures. |

Got the bed sides and hood painted, then started to so the patina work. I went with original color white, and black epoxy primer under it. I might add a little rust primer but kinda like the black and white look. Haven't decided weather ill put a satin or gloss clear coat.

Repaired broken negative battery terminal. After finding all local parts stores had only 4ga replacement cables and most were too short... I needed 32" 2ga, I found a suitable replacement terminal at the Orielleys parts house along with a 2ga brass lug and a 2ga solder pellet. Cut the broken terminal off the end of my 2ga cable, used vicegrip plires to hold the lug while the pellet boiled and put my existing 2ga ground wire in. With continued heat, some of the solder wicked into the strands. Covered it all up with a piece of heat shrink wrap and done... -klb |

It was yesterday , but I drove to Rocky Mountain Forest Products and picked up my special ordered 1"x8"x8' beetle kill pine. It came in to the yard in 5 16' boards and so they cut them down to 10 8'ers so I could haul'em home.

Their shoddy work has me checking off a long list of items to correct, repair, and replace. All is good now...moving on and feeling better that I am fixing things myself.:metal: |

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Hi, i replaced the original Delco starter with a GM mini starter from DB Electrical a week or so ago. It crapped out after 5 days. I contacted DB and they replaced it right away. Sounds great now, hope I get more than 5 starts. DB’s service is first class, no tech assistance tho.

Some progress and learning a lot. I'm slow on things first time out, but I did manage to get this done over the last few days. Nice when you have the parts. 4" drop.
Ask me about torque on leaf spring suspension.......I can give you a lengthy unspecific answer, but close;) Go figure, you can buy replacement saddles and plates after all. Can't speak for their quality, mine were still good. |

How do you plan to attach it to your cut radio opening? My dash was also unfortunately cut for a newer stereo by the previous owner. That plate, color matched hugger orange and I would be good to go! I think there would be a lot of interest from people with cut original dashes....just saying ;) Good job. Sam |

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
It's actually suspension disassembly week for me. Removed both front spindles for disc conversion and tore both ball joint boots on the right side, then discovered that the upper cross shaft bushings were worn, so next up is removing the upper control arms and replacing the bushings. Yay!

For me it was carb-disassembly-week. Blew it apart and started the cleaning, rebuild process. Replacement parts arrived today, so tomorrow will be to reassemble carb, attach new choke components, install and test.

I stained my truck bed few days ago, its wood that came off a tear down barn so it was a real dull grey weathered color, so I thought i would make it a bit less dull and protect it as well as I really like the real old barn wood.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Got the bed back together, had the bed on kinda lose when I realized there is no way to get to the back bolt unless I drop the fuel tank. With the bed on theres no way to get to the nuts when placing the fuel tank. Welded the nuts in place, then got the bed where I want it and tightened down, then was able to put the tank back on. Always a learning experience.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Today was fun filled!
Carburetor - reinstalled the newly rebuilt carb, with new brass float, missing choke pull off, new idle mixture screws, and new jets. Once warmed up, adjusted idle mix, timing, and initial adjustment of choke. Waiting until it is dead cold to tweak choke pull off. Supposed to be a low of 24 tonight, so dead cold is right about now. Heater - dissected the heater box in the cab and found several interesting things. First, the outlet flap was broken and just flapping about. So, given it is winter here, just removed it all together. Will address the remainder next spring. Second, determined why my air flow was non-existent, and removed the remnants of a prior tenant. It looked rather cozy, if you were a mouse. I took a picture, but didn’t include it here. Ain’t nobody wanna see that... Installed parts from GMCPauls: wiper arms and blades, and new gas cap. Finally, replaced the driver door lock so the key matches the passenger door lock. |
