Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well tonight I was going to start on welding all of the nuts for the bolts that hold on all of my rear suspension brackets but started looking at some things that i should probably get done before I start doing the boxing.
First off here is a picture of the steel that I will be using http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps2d7e5dd3.jpg The first problem I noticed was one of the cross members in the truck. The way it is factory made is really going to make it hard to go about boxing in that part of the frame. So I am going to cut it out and replace it with some 2x1/4. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps5913e360.jpg I then also have to push my front rear spring hangers in toward the frame some. When I first mounted them they I did not notice that they where not flat against the frame and so I need to fix that and probably going to add 2 more bolts into the bracket to the frame. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psc83359c7.jpg The last thing I need to do is add some support for the bottom of the shackle flip bracket to the bottom of the frame. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psf85b5c32.jpg One step forward three steps back it seems. Just gotta keep plugging along! |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well today I got the cross member cut out and got a new one tacked in place. I seemed to have forgoten to take pictures of it. I will tomorrow. I also added 2 more bolts to my front rear spring hangers and got them all pulled up tight to the frame so they are now correctly mounted. Should hopefully have all the templates I need made tomorrow so I can start cutting some steel!

Here is a picture of the new cross member tacked into place.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps830137df.jpg I was also able to make the templates for the steel for the rear part of the frame. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...pscec32b69.jpg |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I started cutting out the steel for the rear. I hate using card board as templates as it flexes to much so when you transfer it to steel its usually to big. But it is probably better to have to grind it to fit so that it is a tighter fit.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well first up my shop is a mess!
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps23f00835.jpg I then drilled all of my bed bolts through the bottom of the frame as well. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps26afd9ac.jpg And I finally got my plates all tacked into place. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps608fc796.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps9f2ea9d3.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps68c3beb9.jpg Now to just sling 32 feet worth of weld bead at it! |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
You're not done yet?
So, did you tunnel all the way to Iowa from Kansas and get one of my air bags today, and that's why you're not done welding yet? And weld those extra holes shut son! |

And yes I did, but you came in right after I grabbed the first one so I couldn't steal the rest. HELL NO. Do you know how many holes are in these damn frames? |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
So today I bought one of these.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps520ded84.jpg And did this to it. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...psc4c3a631.jpg And it makes a shape like this. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...ps5b88ac64.jpg and that is all you get till the next update. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
 I like your little tools to hold the metal together!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Looks sweet, those little clamps look handy. now.... why didnt you have that broke wherever you had it sheared? i suggest some inside and outside weld on that baby on the bottom of the tank. and clean the shaz out of the joint area. get all the black surface coat off the edges where you are gonna weld to make sure it is a good weld so you dont have leaks in the future

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Yeah the clamps are apparently for making picture frames they seem to wrk tho! And I didn't have it broke because I'm young and dumb and didn't think about that. Apparently I like to make things harder on myself. I planned on welding the bottom inside and out. Know of a good coating to put inside one of these bad boys?
