If I understand this right, it's a really simple sollution!

And yeah, we got this overhere, worked for years with that stuff in trucks
that's what it sounds like to me too. I like the simplicity of it also.
Yes, it must be. I have the tubes and other things already here, so I'm going to try this. It's so simple it has to work!

Last week I was trying to get the "Idiot light" to work, I use LEDs for that...
So honey, I blew up the LEDs :lol:
Came to the conclusion I first had the LED the wrong way 'round and then it was done with it. A bit of thinking wouldn't help.
Thank God for G**gle :metal:

Two minutes and I found my problem...You have to have a resistor parallel and a diode the right way in
Solder everything together, try it...and....it works!!!

The test set up:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/NC...A=w702-h935-no

After soldering and testing, do the same with the dashlight:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/JQ...w=w702-h935-no

To be continued.....

Yes it is that simple really, they dont have to be tight up against the backside, just far enough on the tube to keep it from pulling out, no stress on them.... O-rings dont last forever... but probably get about 20 years out of them!!!!

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

I've had it with the flu, so much!!
Two weeks couch hanging, little on the computer, doin' nothing...

So tomorrow I go and try to do something on the truck.
Hoping to get the doors in and try make PTC's sollution to work.

By the way PTC, I personally know the guy who owned your avatar truck ;)
That is, if I see it right...I'm getting older also you know :lol:

What I have done the last couple of weeks is polish the parklight bezels and bolt them onto the grill:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/eG...=w1122-h842-no

It even has parklights

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/jR...=w1122-h842-no

Don't know if you can see it, but it works!

I also put in the division bar felt in the ventwindow channel. Not the nicest thing to do, but it's in :metal:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/mH...Q=w702-h935-no

Those white things at the edges are the adhesive strips, those are gone now ;)

Until next time......

Yeah :metal::metal:

Got both doors in today!!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/lI...g=w702-h935-no

Driver side door has better gaps than the passenger side, but I can live with that. It's no show truck, it's a driver :sexy:

Im sure it will be changing soon... ;)

Wait till you see the truck in person, Steve ;)
This one has never seen a paintgun
All is done with a roller, remember, I like 'm rough :metal:

It's a driver (and I can't afford a $ 6000 paintjob...), if the blue paint wasn't so ugly I probably wouldn't have painted it afterall.

Today I took the time to finally make the driveshaft loop:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/R8...g=w702-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/dW...Q=w702-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/MQ...g=w702-h935-no

The loop is bolted down with four M10 bolts (3/8"). Only clean it up and put some paint on it.

I also cleaned the right side of the Fleetside bed, the part under the bedwood.
I must say, it's really clean, a bit rough but no rust at all :sexy:
After cleaning and inspection, I primered it with rust encapsulator/primer.
This gets the same threathment as the cab: rust encapsulator - primer - paintable rubber undercoating and then 3 layers of shiny black paint :metal:

You are correct, I have about one inch all around.
But keep in mind I have a Jag IRS in the back, solid mounted diff, so the only movement of the driveshaft is from the engine/transmounts.

I also want to thank PTC for helping me out with some parts.
Thanks a million times PTC!!!
It feels great to have people around the world who are willing to help anytime!

Today I got to the other bedside. There was a hole, made by the PO, that I had to close first.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/sP...A=w702-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/BS...w=w702-h935-no

After welding and priming:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/i6...=w1122-h842-no

Next I cleaned all the cross sills of the bed.
That was a few hours to get all the 57 year old mess off

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/jp...=w1122-h842-no

Tomorrow it's time for the first layer of primer.....

Thanks Dug224!

The bed is in great shape!
I think you have more work on your bed ;)
The hole was 2", I think for gas filler, altough it was a bit low...
Who's using CB antennas nowadays? Must be from the 70's or 80's?

Only did a little primer today:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Gs...=w1122-h842-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/O0...=w1122-h842-no

Had a little time in the Hot Rod Shed.

First sad news, our shop dog has passed away. She had a very good life with the owner. She was an original Blond Labrador and reached 14 years old.
R.I.P. Laila.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/PY...Q=w702-h935-no

It's hard, but work goes on...
Had my son help me put the bed on. It's beginning to look like a truck again :metal:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/my...=w1122-h842-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ts...=w1122-h842-no

I think of making the gas and propane filler where I marked the square on the bed.

Tonight I put the cross sills in and bolt them down:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/up...=w1122-h842-no

Now I can route the propane lines, hang the exhaust, finish the truck :lol:

Here you see how I routed the exhaust

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/5W...g=w702-h935-no

The propane tanks are nicely under the bed

Laila wasn't our dog, but of the owner of the property I'm having the truck at.
But I've known Laila her whole life, since she came there. Beautiful dog, always happy when I arrived!
Yeah, will miss her.....

Didn't work on the truck these last days, have some brain issues to deal with ;)
Hope Monday will be a good truckday...:metal:

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Feeling good!
So had some things done, first I welded a drain plug in the trans pan.
I had an old engine oil pan which gave his drain plug ;)

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/DS...=w1122-h842-no

I also made bung on the lathe for a transmission oil temp sensor, welded this too in the pan:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/5I...=w1122-h842-no

Welded these two inside and outside to make sure they doesn't leak.
Fresh coat of paint and it's ready to go.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/vv...=w1122-h842-no

I want a rollpan at the rear, and want a hidden hitch reciever. So I have to make one, easy!
Made the two 90 degree angles in the metal brake and now had to come up with something to make the radius for the bottom...
I took some 3/8" straight iron and the stainless pipe I will use for the cooling pipes, and bended the future rollpan. It was pretty heavy to do, but it worked :metal:

The beginning:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/xD...=w1122-h842-no

As you see I have to make it in two pieces.
How I made the radius:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-U...=w1122-h842-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/g1...=w1122-h842-no

Well, that's it for today.

Advanced Design 03-23-2016 09:10 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Nice work on the roll pan Kees! Creative solution on that and the transmission pan drain plug.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Good work Kees. Do you have workshop with lathe and sheet metal folder at home?

RockinKees 03-24-2016 05:19 AM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thanks Doug and Nev68!!

Nev, unfortunatly I have no room at home to build cars....
I have a small shed behind my house where I build motorcycles, here I have the lathe, drill, TIG welder and most of my tools. On the motocycle lift is currently my old Harley which I'm building in Bobber style, it's sold. Riding motorcycles is over for me unfortunatly....
The truck is at a friends house where we built a shop just for me :metal:
The metalbrake is homebuild and is there, it's not perfect but it does its job, with a little persuation ;)
So, I'm lucky to have two shops :lol::lol:

RockinKees 03-24-2016 04:09 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Kim, Jim and PTC, Thanks a lot guys!!

One step further....
I welded the two parts together, and ground them down so they fit the rear:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/z4...=w1122-h842-no

I decided to make it a bolt-in, so I made some simple brackets to hold the pan at the sides. Stainless screws will tighten the upper side.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pi...g=w702-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/lj...Q=w702-h935-no

This is how it's bolt in at the right place:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/zs...=w1122-h842-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/E2...Q=w702-h935-no

It looks better in real life as in the pics...
Now I have to think about the hitch reciever.
I want it to be hidden....
Well it is now :lol::lol:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/de...Q=w702-h935-no

Have to think about making a recessed, hinged licenseplate holder, any tips are welcome!!
Maybe some hinges that are spring loaded or hinges and wingnuts...
Pictures about this item are also very welcome!

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Just came across this:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pj...A=w854-h891-no

This could be a simple sollution.
Only have a risk of a stolen plate.....

MalibuSSwagon 03-24-2016 04:19 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Most commonly used is the flip down plate bracket from a 70's to 90's GM car with the rear gas fill...77-96 Caprices and similar big GM cars use them, 70's Camaros and Firebirds. Spring loaded for ease of use.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Kim, Thanks you Sir!!

Eric, I've just ordered spring loaded hinges. I was at G**gle and saw those fold down plates. But as I live in the Netherlands I have to search for US cars. European and Japanese cars are no probleem. I mean at the junkyard then ;)
I decided to make it myself, but then fold up ( more room).
Thanks for the tip!!!
