[QUOTE=menace121978;3327920]heres a few giant pics...
http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/f...8/IMG_4144.jpg Hey Dennis I was just looking at your exhaust. Did you build that Y pipe or did you buy it? Build is coming along great! Keep it up!!!!!! |
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
The fuel line is from autobarn.com, it should be on the .PDF with all the part numbers. I think.......
|
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
Thanks Bob... i'll take another look;)
as for the exhaust... you can buy just the y part of it as far as i know(from flowmaster i think). i had a place here in town do everything from the shorties back 2 1/2" to the y, 3" to the cat and 2 1/2 out the back. all custom bends etc... sounded mean as hell but i dont think there was enough back pressure.(seemed like i lost low end tq) |
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
Hey Menace, what did you do to clean your frame and paint it? and about how long did it take you? Ive been working on an 86 4x4 that Im turning into a show truck and Im stuck on how to clean certain parts of the frame. BTW, Your truck is turning out bad @ss, cant wait to see it drive.

this is by no means a real "show truck". i'm doing my best with whats available to me. just remember to take your time cleaning and preping the frame because once its done its done. the frame is the begining of your build and it kind of sets the standard for everything else. |
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
I figured you sand blasted some of it, I will have to order some sand blasting media cause no place around here sells it. Thanks for the tip.
|
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
i used sand from lowes... worked great, cheap, and left a beautiful texture on everything. in the 1st pages of this thread i went into better detail on what i used.
|
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
Alright thanks man, Ill have to go back and re-read the begining of this build.
|
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
Hey dennis my buddy has a 78 4 wheel drive he wants me too shave off the hood emblem you think i could swing by sometime and use you welder to shave it, and plus if i shave it i get the hood emblem, its a sport coupe one like i need.
|
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
You made any freakin' progress on this thing yet?
|
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
 funny you ask... i just ordered the fuel system parts from summit! whooo hoooo! just need the high psi hose and clamps next. oh, and a 37* flare tool.(forgot it)
|
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
Cool. Well get the rest there so you can hook it all up. You don't want those parts to sit around waiting to get on the truck for too long. ;)
|
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
I found the brake pics Dennis! Damn, this getting old stuff sucks! Especially since 40 is just a few moths away!
I also saw the way the original fuel valve was in the frame too, makes since now! :D |
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
Dennis, what sand-blasting gun did you use? The one I have keeps clogging up in the line.
|
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
 glad you found it. when threads get so many pages its hard to find stuff;)
as for the gun... i use a cambel hausfeld for all the big stuff. i tried a craftsman one thats just a P.O.S... did you get the sand i said? NOT THE PLAY SAND! the good stuff thats been filtered and screened so there isnt any big rocks and stuff. its like $6.44 a bag at lowes. |

Sand 'er down real good and apply liberal coats of tounge oil! That would look saweet!
Look's good brother! The compressor looks right at home there. I like your engine stand mod better than mine. Looks like there is more room behind the compressor. The PS hoses look great too. |
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
Yeah, I got some good sand from a concrete place I didnt know was around in a town next to the one I live in. Right now Im using a home made gun of sorts. Its a U-POL bedliner gun that uses the bottles, anyway, it has a metal tube that has suction to it that draws the paint up, I jsut stuck a rubber hose on the end of the tube and it works, just not that great. It gets the job done for now though so Im happy.
On a side not: That motor looks freaking bad-ass. I cant wait to see you drive it for its first drive. :metal: |
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
Looks really good my friend. Cant wait to get back to mine, that is if the snow ever stops falling.
|
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
:metal: thanks for all the comments and compliments! i need to order an oil sender adaptor from s&p(and still need to talk to them about their headers), figure out where the coolant temp sending unit goes on the head, and install the fuel system... then search for the best radiator w/ trans cooling and e-fans... little at a time! cant wait to hear her come to life:D |

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
thanks Bob... i'm going to go out and look right now. do i reuse my old temp sensor? and what size tap?
|
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
Yeah, use the one out of the old engine. Drill and tap size will depend on what size sensor your engine has. My guess is 3/8 NPT.
If it's just under 11/16" across the threads, it's 3/8 NPT. If it's more like 7/8" or so, it's 1/2 NPT. |
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
DUDE...looking at your engine made me go :D. I am sure you look similar. Nice job.
|
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
right on! ;)
|
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)

 not quit like that! it was almost70* here today!!:haha:
ok maybe more like 65*.... |
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
Looks awesome Dennis! Now that you have the engine sitting in there maybe things will start moving along. That was a big hurdle. Congrats!!!!
|
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
I bought an oil press adapter from Autometer, through Summit Racing. They are on ebay for $12 plus shipping. Link...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LS1-L...Q5fAccessories I also hear you can use this and not use an adapter that might leak. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LS1-S...Q5fAccessories Theres also this so you have all the adapters you ned http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Oil-p...Q5fAccessories Hope it helps. Engine looks killer. |
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
thanks John! yes it was a big hurdle as i know you understand!:) i hope to keep things going at a steady pace. 1 good thing i realized today... i work all earlys now so i am home to get the packages before Amy! out of sight out of mind:lol:
awesome links Josh! thanks man! 1 thing though, i had oil cooler lines on mine so i will need the block off plate either way. maybe i can get Larry at spp to get me a block off plate and then just get the adaptor in the 1st link. ive read alot on this and never really understood FOR SURE that the ls ecu needs the oil pressure sensor? |
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
The engine is looking great! I like the cross member too.

Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
LS engine does not NEED the oil press sensor signal. I bought my block off plate from Nook & Tranny on EBAY. Heres the link.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LS1-L...Q5fAccessories Again, glad to see the progress. I've been thinking all day wether or not to just strip mine down to the frame or not. I am so close to tearing it all the way down like yours. |
Re: Finally "Silvers" build thread!! ('78 swb 2wd silverado)
When I first joined this site, this is the build thread that got me wanting to do a full restoration. I saved my pennies and bought an 86 4x4. Full restores are great fun but found out real quick they take a lot of time and money lol.

Bob, i got your text... we had company over for dinner so i couldnt get back to you. i understand now:lol: thanks! now Josh! if there are things that you just cant live with or you feel like "its just not right" then tear her down. 6 bolts on the bed, 4 for the cab, etc.. but... imho id do everything i could to leave that cab on there! i know it would be easy for me to suggest and fun for us all to watch you tear your truck down but seriously dude from friend to friend... i wouldnt do it. once the cabs off its an entirely different ball game. you have to do certain things before you do other things and its just a big snow ball if your going to do it 'right'. dont get me wrong... its been fun and i'll do another and i wouldnt change a thing but you really start missing seeing her all together let alone hearing the big 6.oh run. it would be cool to see another frame off LSx though! |
