Got the VHX gauge computers mounted to an aluminum panel that I plan on mounting behind the gauge cluster. There's also a ground block in the middle. Sorry about the blurry cell phone pic. I couldn't get a clearer shot. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pshpvzgqoi.jpg |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
The panel is a good idea. It will really help organize the module and harness package. Going to keep that in mind for my VHX too. Thanks!

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
I saw a display of the VHX setup at Classic Parts the other day and it really looks trick. Was wondering, does it play well with an ECU? I haven't researched what will be required to map things like oil pressure, water temp, tachometer and etc. into the Classic Instruments gauges I purchased to use with the old school Gen I engine. Since switching over to the LS3, it may be worthwhile to consider a VHX panel if you can plug it into the factory harness.

Rob Hartley (Hart_Rod) has done a VHX (in the gold 68) and the new HDX setup in his vehicles. The latest is the HDX in his Superburb project. He's running LS based engines in both. It will be worth looking at his threads too. Last night I was able to get the panel installed and start to connect the BIM modules to the gauge controller. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psnyc90u2x.jpg |

There's a setting within the HDX menus that allow you to change where a particular gauge gets it's input, i.e. SENSOR or BIM. It's pretty easy to setup. Let me know if you have any questions. |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Nice work on the VHX install. I still have to finish making the panel I started making for mine. I have so many modules to put on it, I was running out of room and haven't gotten back to finishing it.

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Nice, I saw you changed your cluster and wiring any chance you want to seel them Im looking for that type of cluster with volts and that wiring.

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
I have made some progress over the last week and a half. Not much, but progress is still progress...
I finally got the high hump installed. Had to mark and drill the holes, then cut some more of the floor for the clips I used, but it's in... or was. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psrvmqqume.jpg I dropped the engine in this weekend so I could test an idea of where I want to mount the ECM. I had been thinking I'd mount it under the dash, but it's really really cluttered in there now... Here it is sitting on a plate I made to bolt to the dash, and was going to somehow tie it to the pedal mount plate I still need to make. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psbiowhkod.jpg Instead, I thought I'd try and see if the harness would reach to under the seat. So, I started routing the wires from the sensors back to the cab. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps2vdn53np.jpg http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psnsu3axat.jpg It appears to be long enough that I can make that work, so I'm going to try and use the junk harness first and get it where I want it, then copy it with the new replacement (good) harness. It looks like there's a ton of extra wire, but there really isn't. Some of all that coiled wire is useless (rear O2 sensors, EVAP stuff and such). The MAF sensor wires are too short, but I can add to them. Also, since the back of the engine and trans are the furthest from where the ECM used to mount in the Express Van, there is a lot of extra length for those wires, but not so much for the front drivers side sensors. Should be interesting, and make for some "fun" nights and weekends ahead. I'm not a big fan of wiring... :waah: Oh, and in case you can't tell, I have some peeling paint issues on the engine and trans. I guess I either didn't clean it or scuff it well enough. I'll be pulling it back out to fix those areas. |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
I have some wiring questions for the LS Swap guru's. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=729064

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
So I think I have my ECM and fuse panel mounting location figured out...
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psno3qow2r.jpg It will be behind the seat, next to the subwoofer. |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Well it's not exactly what I had in mind, but it was easier than my original plan (MDF), and it doesn't require that I cover it with carpet or something.

Dig the PCM mount setup! I love that pic with all the wiring too. It brings back fond memories :)

It made more sense to put it on the floor under the seat. I have about 4" from the seat mount to the top of the seat frame and the top of the connector is about 3.5" from the mount point. I should have enough space for the ECM to sit on the floor without interference. I still need to put the seat in and see how much it sags when I'm sitting on it. I haven't determined where it will sit exactly yet, but it can go anywhere under either side of the seat and probably still be fine, as long as it's near the center position, just not actually in the center... the floor is raised there. I just need to figure out the best location for clearance when someone is sitting in the seat. It will be something like this: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pscgndtnlt.jpg |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
I did test fit the headers. For those interested, these are Doug Thorley Tri-Y long tubes. The drivers side is the closest fitting, but still plenty of clearance where I have it sitting.

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Not much progress lately. I've had several deadlines at work and haven't had any time when I get home to do much of anything.
I did find out Denny's Driveshaft in New York won't make a new driveshaft for a 6L90 trans. They refused the job saying they "don't have the right fixture for it". Whatever that means. This is the go-to place for my local hot rod shop, which is why I even tried them in the first place. I have found a couple other places that might do it. The one I'm leaning toward is The Driveshaft Shop out of North Carolina. Oh, in case anyone is wondering, I haven't hear anything good about local shops when it comes to custom driveshafts. Especially since I want to go with an aluminum unit. That's why I'm outsourcing it to another state. |

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Okay, time to play a little catch up...
A few weeks ago I went to the Lone Star Throwdown here in Houston. I rode with another C/10 Club member in his 67. While at the show I was looking around at all the LS swaps and noticed that most of them were set really far back into the firewall. That got me worried I was going to be too far forward, so I mocked up the core support and radiator to check fitment. Seems to have plenty of clearance. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psignnpnvl.jpg Then I decided it was time to check the air intake. The K&N kit I bought was for a 2016 Silverado 2500 with the same engine... it apparently uses a larger throttle body, so I couldn't use the 90* silicone bend. I bought a Spectre GM 3.875" to 3.5" coupler, a 3.5" coupler and an aluminum 3.5" 90* bend and mocked it up. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psszsgumru.jpg It still clears, but the filter is going to try to sit where the tire is, so some trimming is in order. I also installed the auxiliary battery tray I had purchased to move my battery. Since I'm no longer moving my battery, I decided I wanted to put the filter in that spot. I'll be doing some cutting and welding on that intake tube to get it to work, but I think it will be good in the end. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps95mtercz.jpg |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
And now this weekends minor progress...
I started wrapping my wires with the braided wire wrap I used on the small block. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps2lxbo84q.jpg http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psj4k2efj4.jpg Had to make a couple more connections and still have to finish stretching my MAF wires. Once that's done, I can wrap up the middle section on top of the transmission. Then it should just be a matter of making the final power connections and I should be able to pull the tune! Hopefully... |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
That is right where my motor sits too! Had the same worry, but after mocking it all up last week I found it works perfectly for me also. I personally like it being more forward, makes it easier to work on things on the back of the motor, and everything else is closer to you when you work on it on the front of the motor.

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Time for some progress updates...
I checked clearance of the coil covers so I could figure out how much I needed to trim on the drivers side. This is the passenger side, almost enough for a standard sharpie to fit between the cover and the firewall curve. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psfwdu492e.jpg And the passenger side after several attempts to sneak up on the desired shape. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...pswbwlpyur.jpg Both covers now fit without interference from the firewall. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...ps812uq6te.jpg and I got the Dakota Digital VHX gauges in finally. Had to route and connect the air pressure sensor wires to the BIM module first, but it's all in and ready to go. I also mounted the OBD-II (DLC) on the metal plate below the steering column (waiting on my new Ididit column so I can get it painted). http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/...psdfdf8vzz.jpg |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10

wow, we think a lot alike! I put my OBD2 connector in the exact same spot!!

Keep the pics coming |
Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Great work, Duane. The photo of the gauges don't do them justice. They have a counter display of the unit like yours at Classic Parts hooked up to some kind of dummy inputs that sweep the gauges and step thru the various digital readouts. I just stand there like a kid in a candy store watching all the action. ;)

Re: Knomadd '71 SWB C-10
Nice build man. Nice to see the 6L90 fit with very little cutting. I will be swapping out my 5.3L/4L60 for a 6.2L/6L90 shortly. I like those guages Aswell, I put Speedhut guages in my truck. I cut off the DLC connector and wired into the CAN network and they work great.
