Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I finished up a brake mod that I have been pondering for a long time. The factory-equipped manual brake trucks have a very high pedal ratio which doesn't suit when you've converted to disc brakes. I decided to convert the pedal ratio from 6.8-1 (stock ratio) to 4.1-1, which is in-line with what a power brake pedal ratio should be. I also did a bunch of other things, but instead of going through a long, detailed explanation, you have to check out the last page of my build thread. There's lots of pictures that explain it all.
I'm very happy with the way it turned out. |

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I have been racking my brain on setting up my electronic fuel pump because I am running an 89 454 that had a tbi on it. Well after some time I was always noticing a block off plate to where the fuel pump would be and finally I asked myself I wonder if the cam has a lobe on it to run a machanical fuel pump, so today I went to pick n pull and got a fuel pump rod and it inserted all the way, I had my son crank of over and to my relief it moved up and down, so now I am going to be running a machanical pump instead. My life just got a little simpler.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Organized, sold extra parts and piled my 63 into a corner to work on next.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Cleaned up a full set of cross sills for the bed. Paint next, then wood/strips install.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Wow, can't believe no one else did anything on their trucks today! lol
I got back to work, got the bolts out of one wheel tub. Had to break every one of them. Can't wait to put the bed back together. |

Since then, I also had some problems re-occur, one being the brake lights not working. It could be the switch (at the brake pedal) or it could be the headlight switch. I know, "What does a headlight switch have to do with brake lights?" Trust me, they are connected. Good luck! As for me I'm looking forward to replacing two more brake hoses and bleeding my brakes while I'm at a friend's for the 4th! :D |
Re: What did you do to your truck today?
tryed tightening down my lifters due to a clacking sound that goes with the rpm of the engine. didnt do squat, thought it was a loose lifter... just bought a 67 292 to replace my 78 292. going to complete rebuild...well upgrade it. complete tear down. machined flat, lumped ports, bored.... believe its a lower end noise now... still has quick pick up in 1st... but hey its tow.

Great choice, LT1s are wonderful engines.

Actually, the would of preferred a 6.0, but I cannot complain. I picked the entire car for $400, it runs like a top, and at 130k miles ... I should be good (engine anyway, GM trannys give it around this range) |
Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Went to a local car show for the 4th. My truck was the only work in progress there. Lots of good comments though.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I have been chasing an ignition issue for a while now and think I have it solved. I first replaced the module in the HEI and that didn't help. A buddy of mine gave me a whole dizzy and I dropped that in and problem solved. Now I need to buy one and give his back soon! Im just glad to have that solved.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Was probably the picup coil in the distrib. The wires (2) wear out from moving back and forth being connected to the vacumn advance.

Put in the HEI distributor yesterday. Painted the lifter covers and installed new gaskets this past weekend – no more little dots of oil up and down the driveway! The other thing I did was installed a solar cell system in the garage so there's now power for radio, power tools, shop lights for working on the truck after the sun goes down.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Finished putting my Fatmat in today. Taped all the seams with 3M metal tape. Had a little friend give me a hand as well.
Next up tomorrow is trying to figure out how to install my new Flaming River tilt steering column. It will be interesting since I have not had a steering column in there for 10 years. I know I am missing a few pieces. http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p...l/null-4-1.jpg http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p...l/null-1-1.jpg http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p...all/null-6.jpg http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p...umn/null-1.jpg |

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Changed plugs, and ran vacuum test to tune carburetor. I have it at 19 and solid. Reset timing and just plan tuned the engine to run, idle, and start better. Also swapped thermostat from 180^ to a 195^, trying to get her to run and burn fuel better. She seems to be running rich, so this is why I have gone down this road (above).

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
After work yesterday I raced about and took the truck, with Mickey my neighbour down to a local industrial estate to see if we could get the hole for the towball enlarged.
I had spoken to an engineering shop already who said bring it in after work, but he insisted we go try an old friend he had not seen a few years. Got to where Raj had his shop before ..... Nothing. Turns out he moved a few years ago to much bigger premises less than a kilometer away. Got there and the big guy was not there but "the boys" were impressed by the truck and prepared to give it a go (This is now after hours and Raj allows them to earn "a drink" (English term for a few pounds for a small odd job off the books, a bit like a tip) Out came the Mag drill and some clamps along with a bit of 10mm steel plate. The drill has a strong electro magnet that allows it to effectively clamp onto the job and work as a pillar drill. With Mickey applying the cutting compound we soon had a 40mm hole for the 32mm bolt to fit through, yes I know, but a couple of heavy duty washers will sort that out. Everything still fits correctly. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y13...Billybob38.jpg Many hands make light work. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y13...Billybob39.jpg At this point Raj came back from a job site into the shop and if Mickey was a puppy he would have peed all over Raj's feet. They obviously have good friendship that has stood the test of time. I gave the main operator £20 for a "drink" which he was very happy with. I believe in fairness and this will allow me to go back another day with some niggly job. Job done. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y13...Billybob40.jpg After this I fetched my father in law after dropping Nicola off to look after mum. Then we went to a car gathering where over 120 cars arrived. Will post photos later elsewhere. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Some small incremental progress on the truck. I am trying to get everything that needs to be fabricated involving welding on the frame and chassis, so I can blow this thing apart and paint the frame and start reassy. I finished up the front bracing to the radiator support on both sides and finished up my Frankensteinish/Porter Built cross member/driveshaft loop. I need to scope out if I need to weld on the small clips that hold the end of the brakelines or if they will just pass thru the frame, other than that I don't think I have any more fab work to do but guarantee there will be something else. Always seem to need to remove new paint somewhere to weld on a project.

Wet sanded the non-white areas of the cab (overspray and primer) with 400 today to prepare for possibly laying the color + clear on tomorrow.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
I really like the design of your front end support. I’ve seen many where the main heavy tube runs straight front to back against the firewall, and would seem to be rather dangerous for the occupants in a front end crash. Your design would absorb a lot of deflection rather than sending it into the cab. Beautiful workmanship.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
It finally stopped raining up here and it wasn't 90 plus so in about 3 hrs I hammered out two large dents, rough filled them with bondo-glass and shaped them back to stock. Fixed three rotted out holes and rough blocked the whole drivers side. Its surprisingly straight with just two little dings. Tomorrow I should have the drivers side done and ready for primer. The best part is when I lay the wire tape for the rhino it will end up sealing all of the repaired areas permanently. One other thing I decided to do is when I shoot the rhino is to shoot the roof section since there isn't a headliner and it will insulate the cab even more.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?
Well I had Scott "Jabbo" over here today, he got called out to work last night, so had a quick few hours sleep this morning and then came over by 13.00
Scott had wired up the Grizz-Pod Teardrop Trailer a few years ago for me, I had a regular light board which he then wired up to the Taxi cab lights I fitted to the rear. When it cam to wiring the truck for Euro lighting, I contacted Scott to ask if he was up for a bit of abuse..... to which he thankfully agreed. I had cut and broken some of the driveway this morning and mixed a batch of concrete to redo the bits I had removed, just wrapping up when he got here. Soon we had the truck out, and this was the view. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps3755aeb0.jpg I decided to mount the plug under the load body, behind the bumper for looks and also to keep it safely tucked out of harms way, so this as the result. My mate Peter "Goose" with whom I traveled in Europe on our bikes last year and his wife came down for an evening BBQ and sleep over as they wanted to join us for bootfair in the morning. We found via Vernier caliper that the US Spec 2" chromed towball is about 1/2mm bigger than the UK Spec 50mm towball. So he suggested stripping back the chrome to get it to fit securely into the trailer hitch. Some time spent in the woodwork shed, gently sanding the ball on my linisher left us with a perfect fitting union. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps71a90604.jpg Of course we needed to get some photos. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps4e7035ab.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps7c081efe.jpg Scott and his family had recently moved to a new house and behind the shed he found this...... Seems I have a spare wheel rim now. Just need to get a tyre onto it. Thanks Buddy. Next up I will clean and refurbish the rim. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps60c58b4e.jpg That's all for now folks. Bootfair in the morning. |

Got the green on the cab today after all day yesterday wetsanding the primer and white overspray down, and masking, cleaning, wiping, etc. It appears to have been worth it, i'm pleased with the results, especially since it was 80 degrees and 80% humidity for most of the paint job!
