Re: What did you do to your truck today!
Actually drove Reveille to work today!!!! First time since I brought her home. She did great. Still some back fire through the carb when cold and some dieseling when shutting down. But all in all, I am happy!!! Hopefully a buddy of mine will be joining soon. He has a '49 GMC that he is working on. He is in the same boat as me: not a wrench turner but wants his girl running.

Turned on the headlights and got no headlights ! everything else wprked so I flicked the knob with my finger and of course , the headlights blinked on and I drove on my merry way .
So , I reached into the box o' junk I carry in the bed and withdrew an old light switch , ever so carefully spead the clips and took it apart , cleaned out the old rock hard grease then polished all the contacts to a mirror finish (Electrical Tech Tip : never , EVER scrape nor abrade electrical contacts ! polish them instead then grease them ) before greasing the various contacts & sliding bits & re - assembled it , will install it in short order as no lights is bad , very bad indeed . Al this laor to $ave $7 for a new (Chinese yuk) light switch but now , I know it's good to go for another 40 + years . |

Finally got to drive my truck to town a few weeks ago, reverse had been kinda touch and go when the trans warmed up. After about 10 miles 3rd gear was no more as well...drove it home in second but got home. I do have a lift so I thought it was a good time to buy a tranny jack. Just so happens I went to the Redmond Swap meet and found a nice Quality tranny jack and the guy just so happened to have a "good" 350 trans they had pulled but were not gonna need it...and wanted $30 bucks with the torque converter. So I thought what the hell its only time and not money so I used my new jack and put in my 30 dollar trans. it seems to work great. Also picked up a nice dash cluster as I was looking for a tach. Haven't put the cluster in but did get my new tilt installed, pushed it as far forward as I could (bought off the board, motor home tilt) and nice new repro wheel (also bought off the board) been a great couple weeks.......

Took a trip to the junkyard and finally got a set of trim rings. Not a perfect fit, but cheap is good :D

Got the bed assembled and ready for paint, stripped the cab to send to blasting. Sometime in the next few weeks, I'll order up the LS motor. Hopefully, it'll be done by Thanksgiving. Started it around Sept 1st. and rightly named it project "Quickie"

I had a bunch of non-truck chores today. But, I decided to wire this up this afternoon since the "chime"
came in the mail. In the last few de-bugging test-drives, I realized that my hearing issn't what it used to be. Over the nice rumble, I just can't hear the click of the turn signal flasher...at least consistently... So, taking the lead from a Forum Member and other internet wrenches, I rigged this up. Drilled a little "solder hole" down close to the base of the flasher on each blade. Connected small wires to bigger wires so I could but blades and connectors in the line to the chime. I think the chime...about 80db...makes the same sound an elevator door does when it hits "your floor".... I soldered the connectors on and made the leads longer just in case I want to put in a switch for those times you have to sit at the light for a long time and your passenger says, "Can't you stop that infernal racket?" |

Re: What did you do to your truck today!
Swapped out my door locks today. I was really dreading having to do this. My locks were super worn out and sometimes it would take me 5 min of wiggling the key to get the stupid thing to lock. I bought some replacement GM locks a few weeks ago. Finally today i pulled off my door panels and went at it. Took me 5 seconds to remove the door lock and within 5 min I had the new one reinstalled and working. WOW that was easy! I was expecting to spend half the day working on those things. I also swapped out the ignition as well. That was even easier. Now I can lock and unlock BOTH my doors from the outside! Feels like a new truck! haha

Finally got motivated and got rid of the 4 wheel drum brakes and the sky high stance. Still have some work to do, but I'm close on this part. Just have to change out the U-joint to match the '84 12 bolt (Cut off the leaf spring mounts & shock mounts and welded on CPP conversion mounts...why I used it...:metal: McGaughy 13" brake kit, Auburn diff, 3.42's, etc) I put under it, and finish up the brake lines to the CPP M/C and P/V.
The "new" stuff...McGaughy 13" front & rear brakes. 18" Boss 338's, 18x8" in front and 18x9.5" out back. Front has 2 1/2" drop spindle, 1" drop coil, 'completely rebuilt '76 upper & lower control arms, and all new MOOG '76 steering pieces/parts. Rear has CPP 4" drop coils and CPP deluxe bent bar (to clear HUGE aluminum diff cover). Exhaust is touching the rearend on the passenger side and holding it up just a tad. I'll fix that tomorrow. I've got the complete 5.3L/4L60E swap sitting in the garage and I'm waiting on my buddy to free up some time so I can start on the Paint & Body... Before & After... |
