Finally got the opportunity to take the truck to her first show last night and Ended up taking taking best of show! There were so many crowded around the engine bay all night it was a real treat to hear the responses when they realized that I hadn't just dropped a small block under the hood!

Fitted sheetmetal all weekend. Wrestled the hood all afternoon mostly due to a mix of OEM and aftermarket parts.

I finally started my winter project. Cut out the cab corner, outer rocker panel, the lower door pillar and the cab kick panel area. Just have to get a couple more patch panel and it will be going back together. Then start the left side. It turned out to be about a six beer job so far.

Good deal Ridgeclimber, Do us all novices a favor and document how your doing this with pics if possible. I'm sure we can all learn from your experience. I will be doing this soon on mine....

Since I've had time off from work, figured I might as well make it constructive. Cleaning is a cheap alternative to upgrading. Because it has never been done before its a mountain of a task,but you have to start at the bottom before you can reach the summit.

There is so much oil/dirt/road grime,I thought the engine was painted black, until 6 cans of degreaser later.then I realized it was orange! I've spent the last two days just cleaning the bottom of the engine and have still only done the front halve. Both PO never fixed valve cover leaks.

Yes.I am finding this out. Had tried three different things to cover my eyes finally rested on torch cutting goggles with safety glasses underneath. Caked on oil burns when it gets in your eyes! Lol.

well for the past few weeks I have been working on ole dollor because of the storm damage back in june 5 , I had to touch it up because of the home coming parade ,a lady from Houston Texas is running for Texas Governor , and her husband is running for Texas Attorney General they came to Anton and road in the back of ole dollor in the parade , they are friends of ours and we were glad to have them in Anton , about two weeks ago I started sanding and painting the side top and hood, the side turned out good , the top turned out good, the hood was looking real good and then the moths came to visit right after I painted the hood and was still very wet...guess what ? moths will dig a trench in fresh paint, then they flip over and place there wings in the paint and leave all the powder off their wings in the paint and you can't get it out...so now I have removed all the paint off the hood and will start over from the metal and try and paint again...pic's will follow..

me and my son also made a tool box for ole dollor, we took a 60 " wide box and I cut it down about 11" and my son tig welded it back together and it fits great...here is a pic of the box...

Today I got to work on one of my 70's that I have been wanting to work on but the shop[body] has been full of wrecks to build. I think the last time I didn't have a wreck to work on and the only thing at my shop was a project was probably 7 or 8 years ago. today anyway back to the good stuff, I took the bedsides off to prepare to split them in half to clean them and also there are huge dents on each one that I think would be best handled by hammer and dollie method. If it doesn't work well I'm only out a little time with the spot weld cutter. Also I have other short side that could use some patches and these would do well for that and if they are cut apart it will be easier to prepare to make patches out of the junked bedsides. Also cut the rot out of the core support and got it ready to weld in the new patch. Also did a little on the right fender towards that end as well. Tomorrow looks to be more of the same. Jim

It's actually a High Torque starter and yes , if your engine is in good tune so you
re not cranking it for 30 seconds each start , they rarely wear out . The really good thing is they're dead nuts simple and easy to overhaul in your driveway on a Sunday afternoon when you need to drive it to work Monday morning . If you're observant you'll find one cast off for free or used for $5 , take it apart in your spare time , clean it , replace the bushing , brushes and drive gear , clean , re - paint and grease it as you re assemble and you're good to go . Whilst it's apart , *gently* take the plastic cap off the solenoid and , paying close attention , undo all those nuts so the various copper parts can be removed , hand polish (NO SANDPAPER !) the burned contact points and disc , re assemble and that annoying occasional " click " instead of working when you turn the key , is *gone* ~ just like <magic> and it was FREE ! . I've literally done dozens of these on a curbside basis for folks . often using all used parts from the junk starters I find lying nearby . Even if you damage it (oops) no biggie , just re assemble it and trade it in for a rebuilt . Quote:

Broke the studs off the exhaust maninfold then broke an easy out in the broken stud. Time for a beer.

Finally got my tach installed. I cant believe I ran the truck on the dunes so much with out it. All good now

I received the new windshield grommet fro Steele Rubber Co. , it's American made , good stuff . now I have to go kick out the old glass , clean up the mess and polish & wax the pinchweld so it won't leak when the new glass goes in .
Whenever you're facing a stuck / broken off exhaust manifold bolt , STOP and try this : Get a large over sized washer and slip it over the stud , then take a gas torch (Plumber's propane torch works fine) and slowly heat up the entire stud until it's glowing cherry red , this requires you to keep the flame moving up and down , all around , once it's glowing brightly , quickly quench ir with cold water from the garden hose , keep flushing it with water until it's cool to the touch , not warm at all , then put the hose away and grab it with some vise - grips and turn *gently* ~ as soon as it begins to move , spray any penetrant and work it back & forth , forth & back , it'll loosen up more and more as you work the penatrant in to the threads . For broken studs that are 1/8" or so sticking out , or a deal like the one pictured here , lay the big flat washer over and place a nut , weld the nut to the old stud then proceed as described above . yes , this really does work , once in a while the old ways work best . |
