OK, I get it. The ''Dash'' allows a wider width tolerance.

Spent some time with my dad today working on the bed wood. We got the length and width cut, and we started the process of cutting the notches.

Finished cutting the notches this morning. Also tested routing out a bolt hole.

Finished up the bed wood this afternoon. It was a little thicker than 3/4", so we planed it down. Drilled the eight bolt holes and routed out the washer pockets.

Thank you, Brian. I relied heavily on my dad's help for this wood cutting project.

I'm going to use tung oil like in this thread:

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php?p=7659407

It will require yearly maintenance, but I'm ok with that.

Nice mill work on those boards!

Yeah, the Tung Oil yeilds a handsome finish.
Of course, kerosene-thinned used motor oil appeals to my miserly side...

Haha. Yep. That is definitely a benefit of the motor oil route.

Finally received the spacer that goes between the small fifth gear and the nut on the tail end of the main shaft. It took over a week to get here via Priority Mail and took an interesting path:

Billings, MT
El Paso, TX
Albuquerque, NM
Spokane, WA
CA

The NV4500 conversion from 2WD to 4WD is complete. It is now ready to go into the truck. The fifth gear nut gets torqued to 280ft-lbs. My largest torque wrench only goes up to 250 though, so I positioned the special crow's foot tool so that it pointed straight off the end of the torque wrench. The torque wrench is 18" long to the center of the handle, and the crow's foot is 3" long, center-to-center. This allows the wrench to be set at a lower torque, but it achieves a higher torque due to the increased leverage.

280ft/lbs × (18 / (18 + 3)) = 240ft-lbs

The NP205 shifter bracket from Advance Adapters doesn't quite fit the transmission. There are a couple of bosses on the side of the top cover that will need to be trimmed.

Nice lever used to get it torqued down...and the math to get to 280ft-lbs.

Had to get my wife to stand on that 2x4. She loves being in the garage :mm:

Awesome work you are doing. The bed wood looks great. Why not modify the offset in the AA bracket to clear the bosses instead of cutting the trans? Aftermarket parts do not always fit correctly. Aftermarket does not always have the best bolt on solution. Curios how you know the shifter will be 1/4"-1/2" to the right without everything in place.

I'm not exactly sure yet where the shifter will end up with this AA bracket. I did take the measurements below of the original TH400 trans adapter that came with the NP205, and the AA bracket seems to be close to the shifter mounting position on the original adapter based on some wobbly measurements I took. I plan on attaching the transfer case to the transmission before I modify anything. I think trimming the bosses on the transmission would be a cleaner and simpler solution than modifying the bracket. I already modified the transmission tail housing, so the transmission is already modified at this point. The bosses would still be usable for their original purpose (whatever that was -- the AA bracket doesn't attach to them) by adding spacers if someone eventually wants to put this transmission back in a GMT400 truck.

I took a measurement of the side-to-side position of the AA shifter bracket, and it sits outboard too far by about 7/8". I'm going to fabricate my own bracket that will bolt to two or three of the transfer case/transmission interface studs so that I can get the shifter in the correct position.

I've also included some photos of the original t-case adapter with the '72 shifter installed. I need to find a washer for the shifter bolt.
