and yup.....snow....bummer
having the best tires of us with my new mud lites, i got to the corner before my heroics came to a stop. snow is about 3-4 feet deep, and very wet, the weight of my quad just packed it down till it was sitting on the skidplate and the tires would'nt do anything
Attachment 1793996

me and my son humped threw the snow up past where i got stuck. the road follows a narrow ridge in a big 180-ish loop. almost the entire trail was under 3-4 feet of wet snow.
my son in his youthful ignorance suggested we winch the quads around with mom's and his new winch.......uh-huh

finally got around to finishing the roof on my camper. two coats of Alsan RS, stuff i brought home from work, a two part PMMA resin. added about 7 or 8 lbs to the camper, but roof is 100% for the next 30 yrs or so....one less thing to worry 'bout....ever
still need to replace the ceiling panel in the overhead, escape hatch got ripped off and wrecked in a storm, ceiling panel got a little wrinkled. at least i still had the old hatch cover (it was just grungy) so i put it back on for now. ceiling will haft to wait, heading out next week for 10 days....ya-hoo

What kind of roof is that rubber, metal

My Lance Camper had a thick aluminum sheet metal roof on top of solid ply wood, like it was made to use as a deck.
Lance built a high quality Camper

I just did my 5th wheel roof, rubber, a few weeks ago

my camper roof is a sheet of aluminum over plywood, the Alsan is neither rubber or metal, but an extremely hi-performance 2 part PMMA resin.

it's properties are beyond me, i'm not a chemist, but i know it DOES work, and works well.
some info on PMMA roof coatings

http://rci-online.org/wp-content/upl...11-goodrum.pdf

easy to mix up (just like bondo), easy to apply-brush or roller app only, hardens but stays flexible, is good to go after about 15 mins drying time, can be applied to just about any kind of surface, is practically indestructible once fully cured-impervious to chemicals, oil, gas, can be applied practically anywhere (even vertically and upside down)
foot traffic, and even vehicle traffic does not affect or hurt it.
down side, it's not cheap....but nothing good ever is...it only cost me some time, we have Alsans at our shop, but i prob used about $50-70 bucks worth of it if i had to go buy it...speaking of, you will most likely never find this stuff at your local hardware or builder store. usually it will have to come from a dedicated roofing supplier

we did a "floating" roof over a poop tank at the sewage plant couple yrs ago. we put down a 2-ply torch-on membrane, then spent $35 000 (ya, that's not a typo..) coating it with 2 layers of Alsans.
the Alsans was put over the torch-on to protect it when the floating roof gets all the "clinkers" (poop particles) pressure washed off the roof....without the Alsans, the pressure washers would strip the torch-on membrane like nothing in no time. according to the engineers, the roof should have at least a 30-40 yr life span with constant pressure washings
my camper roof is for all practical purposes, "done for life"

this stuff is great for rv roofs where there is lots of protrusions thru the roof (screws, vents, roof racks, skylites, AC units, fridge vents, etc, etc.....) nothing out there that is better or easier to seal these protrusions than Alsans.
a 25 lb pail, i used about 1/4 of it to do two heavy coats- i figure about 6-8 lbs or so up on my roof

Did a quick overnighter with my buddy Bill to a cool trail here in Colorado. Red Cone pass is listed as extreme, not really a rock crawling trail although there is some of that on it. It's extreme due to the climb and descent to the summit. Tops out at 12,801ft above sea level. The trail runs right up the ridge or spine of the mountain to the top. So you get the thrill of drop offs on BOTH sides of the truck, not just one. Oh and the Descent down is way worse than the climb up.

https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1764/...0c5f15b2_b.jpg

Lots of time in the trees while climbing is tight for a full size. Even worse when running with a house on the back. But coming out of the trees is the trail to the top.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1807/...4cc35afa_b.jpg

The dots you see on the trail are Jeeps. The climb gets steep here. All I could see was hood and sky.
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/835/4...23a745ba_b.jpg

Closer.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1782/...db28573a_b.jpg

An idea of the sheer drop out the driver's side window. That's a long way down.
https://farm1.staticflickr.com/925/4...63b81298_b.jpg
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1790/...9184b105_b.jpg

Up top.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1826/...c43d7d82_b.jpg

The downhill run. To give an idea of the steepness, coming down I had my seatbelt locked and was leaning forward into it from gravity. Otherwise I'd be under the steering wheel. The last section had me standing on the brake pedal with BOTH feet and the truck was still lurching down an inch or two at a time. Hydroboost is in my future for sure. My gopro was running as I was too busy to take pics as I had my hands full.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1809/...845ac6da_b.jpg

Still a great trail to run. We took some easier stuff for the way home. Good way to beat the heat of the front range.

With no less than 5 active wildfires going on right now in Colorado, the idea of a fire at camp like that might find you locked up if they caught you. We are so dry here a minor spark can have the ability to burn thousands of Acres and it's only the beginning of July. One entire forest in the soutwest part of the state is completely shut down to any recreational activities. Camping, wheeling, hiking, fishing is not allowed. You can't even drive or walk in without a signed permission from the local forest rangers.

I fear our mountains might look like a bunch of burnt matches by the end of the summer if the drought keeps up.

don't need to tell me, we were fire banned
most of last yr, worst yr we ever had for burning, fires even cut our holidays short last yr. close to 3 mil acres and 600 houses got burned.
Elephant Hill fire was over half a mil acres and took out over 200 houses and burned for 76 days before it got under control
were coming off 5 straight days of rain, no danger at all, plus there is a creek less than 50 feet behind us, and that 5 gal pail is already full of water. we are quite aware of fire danger in BC. our dry season will be starting soon, but we're not there yet.
it's not like i'm going to go do this when the bush is tinder dry.

I didn't mean to come off like you couldn't do what you were doing. It sure looked a lot more damp than we've had here in a long time so it's much safer. I was just highlighting the difference of what I saw this weekend in comparison. We couldn't start a campfire as most of our state is in a stage 2 fire ban. No open fires, no charcoal grills, no fireworks on the 4th of July.

We were light on snow last winter so what normally starts in late July/August was in full boil by early June.

all good Rob...last yr i prob would have got in schik for doing it. we had a 180% above normal snow pack last winter, so our dry season is coming in a little later this yr...
did it just in time though, forest service fire rating is low and green right now, but with 2 weeks of hi 80's/ low 90's coming up, i'm sure the fire rating will shoot up...which is fine with me cause we leave this friday on holidays....:metal:

beautiful area you were in too Rob, nothing better than hanging on the straps while up in the hills...
in fact it looks a lot like where we're going later this yr in Aug, Molybdenite peak.
some friends of ours rode their quads up there last summer and made a cool video of it...check it out, it is so similar to where you were, it's almost freaky...

Cool video. There were a ton of mx bikes, quads and side x sides on the trail too. Most were cool, but wanted to run at a much higher pace than we were running. So we usually let them by.

I've got video I need to go through too.

you know that old saying, a bad day off is better than a good day at work....well we completely put that theory to the test and then some...after never having any problems for the last 8 or 9 yrs camping, problems caught up to us in spades this time...:waah:
first thing was my son's brand new 8 grand quad would not start- deadsville...turns out the relay that came with the new Superwinch i put on there the other week is a pos from chinaville. after disconnecting the winch and re-routing wires we got it running. son was a little disappointed not having a working winch...
and the weather when we left...well, it sucked...
Attachment 1801265

then just outside of Hope BC, we're coming up to a intersecting road. there was some dumb idiot in a blue car, seen us coming from a block away and then waits till i'm like 50 feet from her, then decides to pull out right in front of me, all 16 000 lbs, and she dawdled like an idiot. i slammed the brakes, and started swerving off the road around her and clipped a stop sign with my bumper and sent it to sign valhalla. a couple finger gestures at her and on we went...
this intersection here...notice the stop sign is gone...

after we unloaded the quads, noticed my son's new 8 grand quad was clicking from the rear wheel. could'nt find anything wrong so i took the wheel off...brakes
quad is a month old and has 2 rides on it, the brake pad holes where they go threw the rods are all wollered out allowing the brake pad to climb the disc and then slam back down causing a very loud click...tomorrow when i start fixing things i will take a picture of my rube goldberg fix...glad this thing has a 2 yr warranty...

so while i'm mcgyver'ing his brakes, son takes the boat out for a spin, which led to prob #3....cam follower on the starter (so you can't start the motor in gear or start with more than an 1/8 of throttle) broke....jeebus!
first day out and no motor for the boat...

last place in town, they don't really do repairs and were booked solid, managed to slide me in and get a new follower and have the Johnson purring again...big shout out to Venture River boats!
and while they were fixing up the outboard, i decided to try find a new clunk on the stepper...turns out my whole tailpipe had broke off the muffler from my hi-speed run down, and was smashing around...again, tomorrow i will take a pic of my other rube goldberg repair...ripped off the entire tailpipe and fastened the muffler back up with some baling wire...
