One thing I have learned is that your garage / workshop can never be too big. We have a 4 car garage and now it is too small for me. We are now looking at some land so I can have a bigger play space. ;) I like your progress. Keep it up. |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Just like this Kees.... form a little box in the center and weld it into place.... cut your receiver hole and put the license plate holder over it.... flips down for the tow hitch!

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Today I cut a hole in my freshly build roll pan...
For a reason ofcourse  https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/iS...=w1122-h842-no Made a recessed plate holder and drilled holes for the licenseplate lights https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/hz...=w1122-h842-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/6Y...=w1122-h842-no All welded and ground, no filler needed :metal: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/sa...=w1122-h842-no Now wait for the hinges to come, then cut a new hole for the hitch and make a bracket for the electrical plug. Next thing while waiting is making the coolant pipes and petrol filler door in the bed side. The list is getting shorter :smoke: (by the way, I don't smoke :smoke:;)) |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Came out real nice.

Nice job so far.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thank you very much, Gentlemen!!
Did a bit of metalwork the last few days. First the coolant pipes, these are the rough ones, its stainless steel: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Gq...g=w702-h935-no The filler pipe for petrol, also stainless steel: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/O9...=w1122-h842-no Next was bedtime ;) The fillerdoor for petrol and propane comes in the rightside of the bed: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/CM...=w1122-h842-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/8S...=w1122-h842-no Well, no way back now :lol: At the scrapyard I had a fillerdoor from a Volkswagen Golf III (Rabbit), but that wasn't going to work. It's too small and too round at the edges. I think I only can use the spring hinge from it. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/tQ...=w1122-h842-no So, I must make my own steel bucket ;) https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/93...=w1122-h842-no No problem! Then the least fine job, making the holes... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_U...=w1122-h842-no Test fitting... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ba...=w1122-h842-no Tackweld in and look if it reaches my standards :lol: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/2O...=w1122-h842-no I think so. On to weld it in... Halfway through.... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/8J...=w1122-h842-no Fully welded: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/EE...=w1122-h842-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/am...=w1122-h842-no Next time on to the door itself. I'm getting there :metal: |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Looking good metal man!!!! ;)
With that huge license plate box you could have fit the gas filler, the propane filler, a hitch assembly and maybe a couple other hidden things behind there!!!! I forgot how big the european plates were!!! |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Yeah, really nice work on the box build and install!
|
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thanks PTC!
Yes we have huge license plates :metal: At the inspection I asked for US style plates, they call it 18.2 plates. They wouldn't give it to me because I have already got a tow rate on my papers.....And they don't give it to commercial vehicles :lol: You ought to know how many American "commercial vehicles" have those 18.2 plates...countless... But what the h*ll, I've got my registration, and if you drive 80 mph, you won't see the plates :lol: |

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Kim, Dug, Thanks again!!
Managed to get the fillerdoor itself in. It was a bit of a struggle to get it right, because the dimensions of the donorcar are, ofcourse, different as what I use  But it's in, only have to tweak it a little to get it perfect. This is a part of the Volkswagen fillerdoor, only did use the spring loaded hinge: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/bs...=w1122-h842-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/N8...=w1122-h842-no I made the door out of 2 mm (14 gauge) steel, bent it a little to match the side of the bed https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/3g...=w1122-h842-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_H...=w1122-h842-no The door is welded to the hinge, the hinge is bolted to the box. I also welded in an angle iron with a rubber door stop. Looks like a professional build :lol::lol: Next I welded all the holes shut, that the PO had made to screw his tonneau cover on.... It were only 83 holes.... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/cg...A=w702-h935-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/XM...w=w702-h935-no The holes were everywhere:whine: |

All those little things and one construction to be made, that is the tailgate. I do not want those chains again, so I welded the holes shut in the bedside, maybe you saw that in the last pictures. So now I have to make something work for the tailgate ;) Also a fair bit of wiring to do, with all that I want :dum: Then I want to make the kickdown to work, it's electric thus must make a switch or so at the carb, plumbing for the propane, building doors, insulate the cab, reupholster the bench and so on... So, not finished yet :lol: But, I take my time, set deadlines and go over them all the time :bann: Ha, I'm having FUN!!! |

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Some metal work again today ;)
Had to make a box around the fuelhoses / pipes, to make sure the soft spots are save from any unseen forces  There are ofcourse some rubber elements in the fuellines that I want to protect against vandalism, thats all ;) So, here we go! The hoses and pipes: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/0L...A=w702-h935-no Turning metal into shape: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Uy...A=w702-h935-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/dg...Q=w702-h935-no Half finished: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Lw...g=w702-h935-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/IV...g=w702-h935-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/aJ...g=w702-h935-no It looks big, but in realtime it's not so big... Now I have to think if I should make an underside onto the bed, so that it's closed (in metal or bedwood??) or if I leave it that way.... If you got ideas, please tell!! This last pic is how it is behind the fueldoor (not fully mounted yet) https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/h2...=w1247-h935-no |
